  • A reliable steady/transient hydro-elastic analysis is developed for flexible (composite) marine propeller blade design which deforms according to its environmental load (ship speed, revolution speed, wake distribution, etc.) Hydro-elastic analysis based on CFD and FEM has been widely used in the engineering field because of its accurate results however it takes large computation time to apply early propeller design stage. Therefore the analysis based on a boundary element method-Finite Element Method (BEM-FEM) Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is introduced for computational efficiency and accuracy. The steady FSI analysis, and its application to reverse engineering, is designed for use regarding optimum geometry and ply stack design. A time domain two-way coupled transient FSI analysis is developed by considering the hydrodynamic damping ffects of added mass due to fluid around the propeller blade. The analysis makes possible to evaluate blade strength and also enable to do risk assessment by estimating the change in performance and the deformation depending on blade position in the ship's wake. To validate this hydro-elastic analysis methodology, published model test results of P5479 and P5475 are applied to verify the steady and the transient FSI analysis, respectively. As the results, the proposed steady and unsteady analysis methodology gives sufficient accuracy to apply flexible marine propeller design.

  • Computational studies of accelerating flow around 2D Circular Cylinder was performed to investigate characteristics of wake field and drag forces. Previous studies had revealed that drag on the cylindrical body in accelerating flow is much greater than that in the flow with constant velocity; however, the underlying physics on the drag increase has not been clearly investigated. In order to investigate the drag increase and its relationship with wake development, this study employed a finite-volume based CFD code, Fluent 13.0 with k-ω SST model for turbulence effects. Inflows are modeled with varied accelerations from 0.4905 to 9.81m/s2. The drag computed in the present study is in good agreement with previous studies, and clearly shows the increase compared to the drag on the body in the flow with constant velocity. The results also show that drag crisis observed at high Reynolds number in the case of the flow with constant velocity is also found in the case of accelerating flow. The analysis for wake and recirculation length shows that conventional vortex shedding does not occur even at high Reynolds number and the drag increase is larger at higher acceleration.

  • Steam reforming of methane in the high temperature solar chemical reactor bas advantage in its heating method. Using concentrated solar energy as a heating source of the reforming reaction can reduce the $CO_2$ emission by 20% compared to hydrocarbon fuel. In this paper, the simulation result of methane-steam reforming on a high temperature solar chemical reactor(SCR) using Fluent 6.3.26 is presented. The high temperature SCR is designed for the Inha Dish-1, a Dish type solar concentrator installed in Songdo city. Basic SCR performance factors are referred to the former researches of the same laboratory. Inside the SCR porous metal is used for a receiver/reactor. The porous metal is carved like a dome shape on the incident side to increase the heat transfer. Also, ring-disc set of baffle is inserted in the porous metal region to increase the path length. Numerical and physical models are also used from the former researches. Methane and steam is mixed with the same mole fraction and injected into the SCR. The simulation is performed for a various inlet mass flow rate of the methane-steam mixture gas. The result shows that the average reactor temperature and the conversion rate change appreciably by the inlet mass flow rate of 0.0005 kg/s.

  • Asymmetric model for plasma uniformity by Ar and $CF_4$ was modeled by the antenna structure, the diameter of chamber, and the distance between source and substrate for the development of plasma equipment for 450 mm wafer. The aspect ratio of chamber was divided by diameter, distance from substrate, and pumping port area. And we found the condition with the optimized plasma uniformity by changing the antenna structure. The drift diffusion and quasi-neutrality for simplification were used, and the ion energy function was activated for the surface recombination and etching reaction. The uniformity of plasma density on substrate surface was improved by being far of the distance between substrate wall and chamber wall, and substrate and plasma source. And when the antenna of only 2 turns was used, the plasma uniformity can improve from 20~30% to 4.7%.

  • In the case of interior fire in an apartment building, contamination of vestibule area by fire smoke before air fan operating when fire doors are open makes the evacuation of people very difficult. In order to investigate the effect of heat release rate (HRR) and interior opening on fire flow velocity, numerical simulations using Fire Dynamics Simulator were carried out. In simulations, actual dimensions and configuration of an apartment building were considered and interior leakage and HRR were varied. From simulation results, it was found that fire flow velocity distribution is significantly influenced by HRR and interior opening resulting in the change of the location of a neutral plane. Also, it is shown that there is a larger difference of the fire flow velocity between upper and lower part of the fire door when the neutral plane becomes closer to the ceiling.

  • Recently, the biochip which is a prime representation of NT, IT, BT, as an example of convergence technology, has been frequently mentioned. With the recent rapid advance in biotechnology, these compact devices, such as lab-on-a-chip or u-TAS, have been developed, and more research is needed. These compact devices typically use the micro-channel in order to shed or detach and mix a variety of materials. Specially, in micro-fluidic systems, a mixer is necessary to produce a mixture because only laminar flow occurs at a low-Reynolds number. To solve this problem, HVM a micromixer that induces a horizontal and vertical multi-mixing flow motion, is proposed. The mixing performance was analyzed and verified by optimizing the shape through the CFD analysis and evaluating the structural analysis and the soundness with material properties that are obtained through the basic experiment.

  • In order to reduce NOx emissions in the 20kW class microturbine under development, the low NOx characteristics, as being an application to the lean premixed combustion technology, have been investigated. The study has been conducted at the conditions of high temperature and high pressure. Theair from a compressor with the pressure of 2.5bar, 3.0bar, 3.5bar was supplied to the combustor with the temperature 560K through the air preheat-treatment. The sampling exhaust gas was measured at the immediate exit of the combustor. For the effect of temperature on NO and CO emissions, though NOx were increased, CO was decreased with increasing inlet air temperature. With increasing inlet air pressure, NOx were increased and CO was decreased also. NOx were decreased, but CO was increased with increasing inlet air mass flow rate. The test has been performed on the equivalent ratio of 0.10 to 0.16 in the lean region. NOx were increased with increasing equivalent ratio, but CO was decreased as an influence of flame temperature. CFD work with an appropriate combustion model predicated a complicated swirling flow pattern in the combustor, and also produced a numerical value of NOx and CO emissions which was to be compared with the experimental one. As the results of this study, NOx are expected to be reduced to less than 42ppm at 15% O2 when operated at the design condition of the 20kW class microturbine.

  • The performance of the crossover system of a centrifugal compressor stage consisting of static components of $180^{\circ}$ U-bend, return channel vanes and exit ducting with a $90^{\circ}$ bend is investigated. This study is confined to the assessment of performance of the crossover system by varying the shape of the return channel vanes. For this purpose two different types of Return Channel Vanes (RCV1 and RCV2) were experimentally investigated. The performance of the crossover system is discussed in terms of total pressure loss coefficient, static pressure recovery coefficient and vane surface pressure distribution. The experimentation was carried out on a test setup in which static swirl vanes were used to simulate the flow at the exit of an actual centrifugal compressor impeller with a design flow coefficient of 0.053. The swirl vanes are connected to a mechanism with which the flow angle at the inlet of U-bend could be altered. The measurements were taken at five different operating conditions varying from 70% to 120% of design flow rate. On an overall assessment RCV1 is found to give better performance in comparison to RCV2 for different U-bend inlet flow angles. The performance of RCV2 was verified using numerical studies with the help of a CFD Code. Three dimensional sector models were used for simulating the flow through the crossover system. The turbulence was predicted with standard k-$\varepsilon$, 2-equation model. The iso-Mach contour plots on different planes and development of secondary flows were visualized through this study.

  • Due to a roots type medium vacuum pump is operated in condition of $1{\sim}10^{-3}$ torr vacuum, it could be applied for production and process of industrial parts, such as precise processing, vaporization, enrichment, separation, casting, metaling, welding, transportation. Therefore, the demand of this pump is increasing nowadays in our industrial markets of semiconductor, electric, electronic, automobile, material, environmental and transporting industries. However, the pumps are almost imported, because the domestic pumps are inferior in fields of vacuum range as under $10^{-1}$torr, relevant techniques(design, fabrication, casting, test, etc.) to the imported ones. In this study, essential parts of the development pump are designed with using of CFD and 3D decodes, FEM for analysing strength and deformation, generated heat, vibration and noise control, and are casted with using of mechanochemistry techniques for decreasing of weights, increasing of heat resistances and abrasion durability of materials for pump caing and impellers especially. Besides, in order to achieve ultimate vacuum around $10^{-3}$torr, this pump is composed of 6 stages, among which 1st stage is operated separately from remained stages. Additionally, a test rig for prototype pumps(300$m^3/h$ and 2,500$m^3/h$) is designed and procured as to apply for multi-staged rootz type vacuum pump, with modification of the test method recommended by KS B 6314 "Positive-displacement oil-sealed rotary vacuum pumps".

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of unsteady flow in a mixed flow pump guide vane under the small flow conditions, several indicator points in a mixed flow pump guide vane was set, the three-dimensional unsteady turbulence numerical value of the mixed flow pump which is in the whole flow field will be calculated by means of the large eddy simulation (LES), sub-grid scale model and sliding mesh technology. The experimental results suggest that the large eddy simulation can estimate the positive slope characteristic of head & capacity curve. And the calculation results show that the pressure fluctuation coefficients of the middle section in guide vane inlet will decrease firstly and then increase. In guide vane outlet, the pressure fluctuation coefficients of section will be approximately axially symmetrical distribution. The pressure fluctuation minimum of section in guide vane inlet is above the middle location of the guide vane suction surface, and the pressure fluctuation minimum of section in which located the middle and outlet of guide vane. When it is under the small flow operating condition, the eddy scale of guide vane is larger, and the pressure fluctuation of the channel in guide vane being cyclical fluctuations obviously which leads to the area of eddy expanding to the whole channel from the suction side. The middle of the guide vane suction surface of the minimum amplitude pressure fluctuation to which the vortex core of eddy scale whose direction of fluid's rotation is the same to impeller in the guide vane adhere.
