  • The sonolytic decomposition of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC 113) and several alternative compounds, such as HCFC 225ca, HCFC 225cb, and HFC 134a, in.aqueous solutions was investigated. The CFC 113 with a high volatility and a low solubility in water was rapidly decomposed with increasing sonication time. The decomposition rates were influenced by the initial concentration of CFC 113, the reaction temperature, and the gas/liquid phase volume ratio but were independant of the pH of solution. The predominant pathway of the decomposition of CFC 113 by sonication was not the oxidation by OH radicals but the pyrolysis with high temperature and pressure inside of the cavitation bubble. The pyrolysis in the cavitation bubble resulted in an almost complete mineralization of CFC 113 with the high efficient formation of inorganic products (Cl$^{[-10]}$ , F$^{[-10]}$ , CO, $CO_2$). The addition of zinc powder on the decomposition of CFC 113 by sonication caused an acceleration of the decomposition. Also, HCFCs and HFC 134a were found to be readily decomposed by the pyrolysis induced from the sonication.

  • The catalytic decomposition of CFC-113(1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane) was studied over an activated carbon catalyst in a fixed-bed reactor at the temperature from 300 to 600$^\circ$C, the space velocity (SV) of 1800 $\sim 14400h^{-1}$ and the mole ratio(decomposition agent/CFC-113) of 0.25 $\sim$ 5. In the absence of a decomposition agent, the decomposition efficiency of CFC-113 was low but when a decomposition agent was added to the gas stream, it was dramatically increased with the increase of temperature. In particular, in the presence of n-hexane as the decomposition agent it showed a high decomposition efficiency compared with benzene at 400$^\circ$C. It was found that the decomposition activity of CFC-113 was very sensitive to reaction temperature. Thus it is expected that to raise the reaction temperature is more effective than to increase the residence time and the amount of decomposition agent. Over the activated carbon catalyst more than 99% decomposition was achieved at the reaction temperature of 600$^\circ$C, SV of 7200$h^{-1}$, the mole ration $(C_6H_{14}/CFC-113)$ of 1 in this study.

  • According to the Montreal Protocol, CFC 113, one of the ozone-depleting substances, will be prohibited to use as a cleaning solvent essentially in the electronic industry. Therefore, the development of the alternative cleaning solvents to CFC 113 is being accelerated. A number of the alternative cleaning solvents are avialable on the market. The alternatives of Axarel 32(DuPont), Cleanthru 750H(KAO Chemical), and EC-Ultra(Petroferm) are chosen for the comparison of cleaning performance with CFC 113. The test methods for measuring the cleaning performance were composed of the measurement of the physical properties, the experiments on the material compatibility with cleaning solvents, the measurement of the evaporation rate, and finally the experiments of the removal efficiency. Normally the basic physical properties of the alternatives had higher boiling points, viscosity and surface tension, which were quite different to those of CFC 113. In terms of solubility of rosin-based flux, the solubilities of abietic acid (nonpolar organic) were similar, but those of the activator (polar organic) in the alternatives were better than CFC 113. The evaporation of the alternatives was very slow, compared to CFC 113, which had much lower boiling point. All the cleaning solvents showed the good material compatibility with FR4 and Cu-coated PCB. The better removal efficiencies of abietic acid were obtained when using the ultrasonic mechanical energy over the dipping method. The experiments also indicated the very slow-eavaporating solvent was not desirable with the dipping cleaning method, and the differences in the removal efficiency of the alternatives with the ultrasonic cleaning method were negligible. Among the alternatives, the overall cleaning performances were obsorved as almost similar. Before selecting the ultimate cleaning solvent, the application of cleaning machine, environmental issues, and economics are simultaneously considered with the cleaning performance.

  • Concerned with environmental issue, a new decomposition method for CFCs that caused the destruction of ozone layer was proposed. Using thermal plasma process, CFC113 decomposed completely. In order to quantify the tendency in decomposition and recombination of CFC113, thermodynamic equilibrium calculations were performed. The calculation was conducted with CFC113, $H_2$, $O_2$ at 1 atm and 300 K~5000 K. In the experiment, products which are generated after decomposition in the plasma were examined by varying reacting gases($H_2$, $O_2$) flow rates and the changes of inside diameters of quenching tubes. Decomposition products were analyzed using Gas Chromatograph. The results are very promising with a decomposition efficiency greater than 99.99%. As to CFC113/$H_2$=1/3, conversion to CO decreased with increasing $O_2$ ratio. When CFC113/$O_2$=1/1, 1/1.5 and 1/2, conversion to CO increases above $H_2$ ratio of 3. The change of CO conversion is not sensitive to power changes. As total flow rate increased, CO conversion was slightly decreased. When the inside diameter of the quenching tube was changed from 8mm into 4mm, CO conversion was increased due to enhanced quenching rate.

  • The experiment for decomposing CFF-113 by a honeycomb catalyst was carried out in this study. Benzene and water were used as decomposing agents. The reaction of decomposition was from 600 .deg.C to 900.deg.C. Benzene was injected at 900.deg.C and then the catalyst was heated to 1100.deg.C by the heat of combustion of it. The electric power of the reactor was turned off when the combustion was started. The reaction temperature, however, was main trained and the decomposition of CFC-113 continued at that time. It was found that the highest decomposition efficiency was 80% at the ratio of benzene/CFC-113 of 20/1 in this experiment.

  • A number of alternative cleaning solvents to CFC 113 which was identified as a ozone-depleting meterial were collected to measure their experimental physecal properties of density, surface tension, Refractive Index, boiling point, pH, viscosity, flash point, and soltbility. They might be classified as aqueous, simi-aqeous, alcohol ketone, and halogen cleaning solvents. The solubilities of abietic acid, a major component of flux used in PCB (Printed Circuit Board) of the electronic indystry, into the cleaning solvents including CFC 113 were determined for comparison. The assorted cleaning solvents have their own advantages and disadvantages. Therefore a end-user carefully needs to choose the best-fit cleaning solvent after the safety, stability, and economics as well as the effectiveness by physical properties of the alternative cleaning solvents are integratedly considered.

  • Nickel was impregnated on the $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ supports and applied to the reduction reaction of CFC-113 ($CF_2Cl$-$CFCl_2$) with hydrogen to 3FCl ($CF_2$=CFCl, CFC-1113). The conversion was rapidly declined on the Ni/$SiO_2$(or $Al_2O_3$) and the deactivation accelerated as the increase of Ni content. However, the selectivity of 3FCl was maintained at around 80% level. The simultaneous coprecipitation of copper and lithium on Ni/$Al_2O_3$ improved both the conversion and selectivity to 3FCl, but an excessive amount of lithium reduced the conversion as well as the selectivity of 3FCl. However, in the case of Ni/$SiO_2$, the conversion was greatly reduced possibly due to a loss of silica support with high surface area by the reaction of $SiO_2$ with HF. Such a reduction in conversion also can be ascribed to the decrease in active sites, caused by the addition of alkali metal compound, LiOH.

  • The global environmental problems have been caused by the release of CFCs. Therefore, methods for safe destruction of recoverd CFCs will be eventually needed. The objective of this study was to develop and test a catalyst operating at a mild condition for the decomposition of CFC-113. In this work, catalytic oxidative decomposition of CFC-113 was carried out over aerosol $TiO_2/SiO_2(ATS)$ catalysts prepared by the sol-gel method. All ATS catalysts(Ti/Si mol ratio=1, 2, 2.33, 4) showed high initial activity. However, the deactivation of ATS catalysts was found that more remarkable due to an attack of fluorine and the destruction of ATS structure(Si-F reaction) from analyses of SEM-EDX, XRD than $TiO_2/SiO_2(ATS)$ catalyst prepared by the precipitation method. ATS catalysts prepared by more acidic prehydrolysis condition were found to have still more activity and longer life-time by increasing of acidity. The activity of ATS catalyst also depend on the content of $TiO_2$. There was reason that the acidity of the ATS catalyst was increased with the increased content of $TiO_2$ from 50 to 80 mol %. Solid superacid catalyst ($ATX/SO_4{^{2-}}$) modified with $H_2SO_4$ solution was prepared for high activity and lower deactivation. The reaction of $ATS/SO_4{^{2-}}$ catalyst also exhibited even higher activity and lower deactivation than the original ATS catalyst. It is suggested that the addition of the sulphate species clearly inhibit the deactivation.

  • Gas adsorption on adsorbents depends on temperatures and pressures. When these parameters are fixed, the adsorption capability and selectivity can not be changed. If the gas adsorption is controlled by another factor like electromagnetic field, the adsorption and desorption can be managed by much intentional way. The microwave has characteristics to excite particular components such as water without destroying it. In this study, microwave was irradiated to the adsorbent of an NaY zeolite which is almost transparent to microwave. As vapor of 1, 1, 2- trichloro-1, 2, 2-trifluoroethane (CFC-113) and water flowed simultaneously on the zeolite packed in a column at room temperature, only water was adsorbed. The . adsorbed water was removed from the zeolite and then replaced by CFC-113, since the microwave was irradiated. Greater the power of microwave was, more CFC-113 was adsorbed. The water adsorption took place again after a latent period by stopping the microwave irradiation.

  • Hydrogenolysis reactions of CFC-113a catalyzed by various heterogeneous catalysts $(Rh/Al_2O_3,\;Pd/C,\;Ni,\;Al_2O_3,\;Active\;carbon)$ were investigated in the liquid and gas phases. In the liquid phase reaction, different catalysts showed different activities, but all catalysts used gave high selectivities toward HCFC-123 over 95%. It was noticeable that the neutral $Al_2O_3$ showed both a high activity and a selectivity in the liquid phase reaction. In the gas phase reaction, transition metals on carbon(Pd/C, Pt/C) were so active for hydrogenolysis of CFC-113a that they even catalyzed the production reaction of overhydrogenated compounds such as $HCFC-133a(CF_3CH_2Cl)\;and\;HFC-143a(CF_3CH_3)$. $Al_2O_3$, which showed the high activity in the liquid phase reaction, did not show a remarkable activity. When $Al_2O_3$ was used in the liquid phase reaction, the hydrogenolysis of CFC-113a proceeded without any side products in THF. However, the same reaction in MeOH produced side products, such as $CH_3OCH_3\;and\;CH_3CH_2OCH_3$ from solvent. Based on this result, including heterogeneous catalysts, it was concluded that the solvent played an important role in the liquid phase reaction.
