Fly ash from a circulating fluidized bed combustion boiler (CFBC fly ash) is very different in mineralogical composition, chemical composition, and morphology from coal ash from traditional pulverized fuel firing because of many differences in their combustion processes. The main minerals of CFBC fly ash are lime and anhydrous gypsum; however, due to the fuel type, the strength development of CFBC fly ash is affected by minor components of active $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$. The initial hydration product of the circulating fluidized bed combustion fly ash (B CFBC ash) using petro coke as a fuel is Portlandite which becomes gypsum after 7 days. Due to the structural features of the portlandite and gypsum, the self-cementitious strength of B CFBC ash was low. While the hydration products of the circulating fluidized bed combustion fly ash (A CFBC ash) using bituminous coal as a fuel were initially portlandite and ettringite, after 7 days the hydration products were gypsum and C-S-H. Due to the structural features of ettringite and C-S-H, A CFBC ash showed a certain degree of self-cementitious strength.
This paper investigates the reaction rates of $CO_2$ that stores carbonation through comparing the carbonation behavior between $Ca(OH)_2$ and fly ash with circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) containing a large amount of free CaO. Because fly ash with CFBC contains abundant free CaO, it cannot be used as a raw material for concrete admixtures; hence, its usage is limited. Thus, it has been buried until now. In order to consider its reuse, we conduct carbonation reactions and investigate its rates. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) are conducted for the physical and chemical analyses of the raw materials. Furthermore, we use a PH meter and thermometer to verify the carbonization rates. We set the content of the fly ash of CFBC, $Ca(OH)_2$, $CO_2$ flow rate, and water to 100 ~ 400 g, 30 ~ 120 g, 700 cc/min, and 300 ~ 1200 g, respectively, based on the content of the free CaO determined through the TG/DTA analyses. As a result, the carbonization rate of the fly ash with CFBC is the same as that of $Ca(OH)_2$, and it tends to increase linearly. Based on these results, we investigate the carbonization behavior as a function of the free CaO content contained in the raw material.

Nowadays, circulating fluidized bed combustor(CFBC) boilers system that can reduce environmental pollution particles are widely used in electric power plants. But the fly ash generated from CFBC boilers has lower $SiO_2$ and higher MgO and $SO_3$ contents and also has free CaO inducing expansion and abrupt initial setting of concrete. Therefore, revised KSL5405 for CFBC fly-ash as well as pulverized coal combustion(PCC) is introduced in the concrete field. In this study, the chemical properties and mechanical properties of blended cements with PCC and CFBC fly-ash produced in Korea are analyzed. The blended cement with only CFBC fly ash shows a lower length change than OPC but a higher flow change ratio. The compressive strength of blended cement paste with PCC and CFBC fly ash is slightly greater than that of cement paste with only PCC fly-ash. Based on the results, CFBC flyash blended cement products should be used with PCC flyash to ensure the material stability and material properties.

The objective of this investigation was to develop rules for automatic categorization of concrete quality using selected artificial intelligence methods based on machine learning. The range of tested materials included concrete containing a new waste material - solid residue from coal combustion in fluidized bed boilers (CFBC fly ash) used as additive. The rapid chloride permeability test - Nordtest Method BUILD 492 method was used for determining chloride ions penetration in concrete. Performed experimental tests on obtained chloride migration provided data for learning and testing of rules discovered by machine learning techniques. It has been found that machine learning is a tool which can be applied to determine concrete durability. The rules generated by computer programs AQ21 and WEKA using J48 algorithm provided means for adequate categorization of plain concrete and concrete modified with CFBC fly ash as materials of good and acceptable resistance to chloride penetration.
Vietnam CFBC fly ash has high CaO content and can be used as a solidification agent for soft ground improvement. However, most fly ash is treated as landfill or waste. In order to utilize fly ash as a solidification agent for soil improvement, the characteristics of fly ash must be accurately determined. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted on fly ash from four CFBC power plants to evaluate the utility of Vietnam fly ash as a solidification agent. As a result of analyzing the physical properties, it was analyzed that all four samples were suitable as material for solidification agent and have suitable particle size for the improvement of soft ground. As a result of analysis of chemical characteristics, it was analyzed that the fly ash of one place could be used as a solidification agent because of the high content of free-CaO. The remaining three fly ash was not suitable for use as a solidification agent due to low Free-CaO content. However, it has a chemical composition similar to that of general fly ash in Korea, so it can be recycled in various ways.

In this study, the Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) was investigated to utilize the bottom ash and fly ash generated in the Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustor (CFBC). It was confirmed that the CFBC fly ash (CFBC-F) and CFBC bottom ash (CFBC-B) had an irregular particle shape through SEM measurement. According to the results of the hazard analysis, it was also confirmed that they were environmentally safe. In the case of mixing with CFBC-F, the unit quantity was increased. Regarding the rate of change of length, shrinkage in the range of -0.05~0.50% occurred in the air dry curing condition and expansion in the range of 0.1~0.6% in the sealed curing condition. Compressive strength was increased in the sealed curing condition compared to the air dry curing condition because there was enough moisture for hydration reaction in the long term. Therefore, the results of this study are likely be used as basic research data of mine filler materials.
The purpose of this study was to prepare lightweight foamed concrete by mixing coal fly ash of circulating fluidized bed combustion(CFBC) with cement, and to develop uses for recycling by analyzing carbonation behavior resulting from a change in conditions for pressurized carbonation. For concrete, CFBC coal fly ash was mixed with Portland cement to the water-binder ratio of 0.5, and aging was applied at room temperature after 3 days of curing at $20^{\circ}C$, RH 60%. For carbonation, temperature was fixed at $60^{\circ}C$ and time at 1 h in the use of autoclave. Pressures were controlled to be $5kgf/cm^2$ and the supercritical condition of $80kgf/cm^2$, and gas compositions were employed as $CO_2$ 100% and $CO_2$ 15%+N2 85%. In the characteristics of produced lightweight concrete, the characteristics of lightweight foamed concrete resulting from carbonation reaction were affirmed through rate of weight change, carbonation depth test, air permeability, and processing analysis for the day 28 specimen. Based on these results, it is concluded that the present approach could provide a viable method for mass production of eco-friendly lightweight foamed concrete from CFBC coal fly ash stabilized by carbonation.
This paper investigates the reaction rate of $CO_2$ storing carbonation hybrid reaction by comparing the behavior of carbonation between $Ca(OH)_2$ and fly ash with that of CFBC (Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion) containing plenty of Free-CaO. Because fly ash with CFBC contains a lot of unreacted CaO, it cannot be used as a raw material for concrete admixtures and its usages are limited. To reuse such material, we stabilized unreacted CaO by carbonation and investigated the carbonation rate. We used a pH meter and a thermometer to check the rate of the carbonization. Also, we set the contents of fly ash with CFBC, $Ca(OH)_2$, flow and fluid of $CO_2$, respectively, to 100 g, 50 g, 100 ~ 1000 cc/min and 400 g based on the content of Free-CaO. We used carbonated water instead of water, and added an alkaline activator to promote the carbonation rate. As a result, the addition of the alkaline activator and carbonated water promoted the rate of carbonation via a hybrid reaction.
A Controlled Low-Strength Materials (CLSM) is suitable for mine backfilling because it does not require compaction owing to it high fluidity and can be installed quickly. Therefore, a CLSM utilizing $CO_2$-solidified Circulating Fluidzed Bed Combustion (CFBC) coal ash was developed and it's properties were investigated, since. $CO_2$-solidification of CFBC coal ash can inhibit exudation of heavy metals. The chemical composition and specific surface area of Pulverized coal Combustion fly ash and CFBC fly ash were analyzed. The water ratio, compressive strength and length change ratio of CLSM were confirmed. The water ratios differed with the specific surface area of the CLSM. It was confirmed that the porosity of CLSM affected its compressive strength and length change ratio.
