  • This paper introduces core techniques on ship detection and tracking based on a compact HF radar platform which is necessary to establish a wide-area surveillance network. Currently, most HF radar sites are primarily optimized for observing sea surface radial velocities and bearings. Therefore, many ship detection systems are vulnerable to error sources such as environmental noise and clutter when they are applied to these practical surface current observation purpose systems. In addition, due to Korea's geographical features, only compact HF radars which generates non-uniform antenna response and has no information on target information are applicable. The ship detection and tracking techniques discussed in this paper considers these practical conditions and were evaluated by real data collected from the Yellow Sea, Korea. The proposed method is composed of two parts. In the first part, ship detection, a constant false alarm rate based detector was applied and was enhanced by a PCA subspace decomposition method which reduces noise. To merge multiple detections originated from a single target due to the Doppler effect during long CPIs, a clustering method was applied. Finally, data association framework eliminates false detections by considering ship maneuvering over time. According to evaluation results, it is claimed that the proposed method produces satisfactory results within certain ranges.

  • In this paper, we analysis wideband spectrum sensing with distance based weight combining for Cognitive Radio (CR) systems. CR systems is implemented the spectrum of the Primary User(PU) by using a energy detection method. Threshold is determined in accordance with the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) algorithm for energy detection. The signal of PU is BPSK signal and the wireless channel between a PU and CR systems is modeled as Gaussian channel. From the simulation results, the wideband sensing with distance based and Distance based weight Combing (DWC) methods shows higher spectrum sensing performance than single CR user spectrum sensing.

  • Preliminary results are reported on ship detection using coherence images computed from cross-correlating images of multi-look-processed dual-polarization data (HH and HV) of ENVISAT ASAR. The traditional techniques of ship detection by radars such as CFAR (Constant False Alarm Rate) rely on the amplitude data, and therefore the detection tends to become difficult when the amplitudes of ships images are at similar level as the mean amplitude of surrounding sea clutter. The proposed method utilizes the property that the multi-look images of ships are correlated with each other. Because the inter-look images of sea surface are covered by uncorrelated speckle, cross-correlation of multi-look images yields the different degrees of coherence between the images and water. In this paper, the polarimetric information of ships, land and intertidal zone are first compared based on the cross-correlation between HH and HV images, In the next step, we examine the technique when the dual-polarization data are split into two multi-look images, It was shown that the inter-look cross-correlation method could be applicable in the performance improvement of small ship detection and the land masking, It was also found that a simple combination of coherence images from each co-polarised (HH) inter-look and cross-polarised (HV) inter-look data can provide much higher target-detection possibilities.

  • Determination of type of a vehicle is being used in various areas such as collecting tolls, collecting statistical traffic data and traffic prognosis. Because most of the vehicle type classification systems depend on vehicle length indirectly or directly, highly reliable automatic vehicle length measurement system is crucial for them. This study makes use of a pencil beam laser rangemeter and devises a mechanical device which rotates the laser rangemeter. The implemented system measures the range between a point and the laser rangemeter then indicates it as a spherical coordinate. We obtain several silhouettes of cross section of the vehicle, the rate of change of the silhouettes, signs of the rates then squares the rates to apply cell averaging constant false alarm rate (CA-CFAR) technique to find out where the border is between the vehicle and the background. Using the border and trigonometry, we calculated the length of the vehicle and confirmed that the calculated vehicle length is about 94% of actual length.

  • In this paper, we analysis the performance of cooperative spectrum sensing with distance based weight for cognitive radio (CR) systems and CR systems sense the spectrum of the licensed user by using a energy detection method. Threshold is determined in accordance with the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) algorithm for energy detection. The signal of licensed user is OFDM signal and the wireless channel between a licensed user and CR systems is modeled as Gaussian channel. From the simulation results, the cooperative spectrum sensing with distance based weight combining (DWC) and equal gain combing (EGC) methods shows higher spectrum sensing performance than single spectrum sensing does. And the detection probability performance with the DWC is higher than that with the EGC.

  • Cooperative spectrum sensing is proposed to overcome some problem such as multipath fading and shadowing and to improve spectrum sensing performance. There are different combining methods for cooperative spectrum sensing: hard decision method and soft decision method. In this paper, we analysis the performance of cooperative spectrum sensing with distance based weight that is kind of a soft decision rule for cognitive radio(CR) systems and CR systems sense the spectrum of the licensed user by using a energy detection method. Threshold is determined in accordance with the constant false alarm rate(CFAR) algorithm for energy detection. • When a free-falling ballistic missile intercepts a maritime target in a sea clutter environment at high grazing angle, detection performance of the ballistic missile's seeker can be rapidly degraded by the effect of sea clutter. To solve this problem, it is necessary to verify the performance of maritime target detection via simulations based on various scenarios. We accomplish this by applying a two-dimensional cell -averaging constant false alarm rate detector to a two-dimensional radar image, which is generated by merging a sea clutter signal at high grazing angle with a maritime target signal corresponding to the signal-to-clutter ratio. Simulation results using a computer-aided design model and commercial numerical electromagnetic solver in various scenarios show that the performance of maritime target detection significantly depends on the grazing and azimuth angles.
