Identification of compatible parental line is of great importance in introduction of useful characters to onion breeding program, beyond the severe hybridization barrier. Phylogenic analysis of Allium section Cepa was conducted through PCR by URPs, repeated sequences of A. fistulosum, and microsatellite markers. Totally 76 accessions originated from 21 countries were clustered into five groups at a 0.84-similarity level: group I;A. cepa and its wild relatives and A. cepa ssp. ascalonicum, group II; A. cepa ssp. wakegii, A. cepa ssp. proliferum and Samcheung-pa group III; A. fistulosum and A. altaicum, group IV; A. galanthum, group V; Soeckkori-pa. Samcheung-pa and Soekkori-pa, Korean local varieties, shared band type of both Cepa group and Altaicum group, indicating that those are derived from interspecific hybridization between A. fistulosum and A. cepa.
This paper study on the effect of the removal or reduction of the tariff on Korea-India trade by CEPA between Korea & India and then examines the effects of increased exports & imports to Korea on India. Despite the analysis is based on data over a short period of time, this paper shows that CEPA between Korea & India has substantially increased Korean exports(42.7%) and imports(37%) to India in 2010. It is also shown that CEPA between Korea & India has had a considerable impact on market. As a result can be summarized as follows. The potential fields of expanding the trade between the two countries due to the tariff concessions of the removal or reduction. Consequently the effect of the removal or reduction of tariff will be low our expectation but CEPA between Korea & India would have a positive effect on Korea's exports to India in the long term. This paper has examined the impact of CEPA between Korea & India on general economy. It needs a further study to estimate trade diversion effect of CEPA and to find out the impacts on specific industry.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of CEPA(2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid) on bark physiology and anatomy of lactree(Rhus verniciflua Stokes). Sample trees of similar size and growth rate were selected from 7-year-old lactree plantation located in Hyengsung-kun, Kangwon-do. Lanolin pastes containing 0.1, 1, or 10% CEPA were put into the bark-removed hole made by corer(${\phi}1cm$) on the main stem at 1.2m above the ground on June 16, 1995. Five weeks after application of CEPA, bark thickness was markedly increased as a result of the increase in the amount of phloem and intercellular spaces, and correlated with the increased production of urushiol. By the application of 10% CEPA, bark thickness was increased approximately 2.5 times, and the urushiol content within bark was increased 2.8 times compared to that of untreated trees because CEPA stimulated the accumulation of urushiol within bark. Treatment of 10% CEPA also increased the size and the total number of secretory canals, and induced an increase in ray width. The phloem parenchyma cells of CEPA-treated trees were well-developed and closely packed with little intercellular space.
This study does the logistic regression analysis in a survey how Korean Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) recognize the effects of the Korea-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership (CEPA) on their business activities and strategies. The results show that Korean SMEs which have relatively more employees and bigger size in terms of sales have interest in the Korea-India CEPA. In particular, the SMEs which are engaged in their business activities with India have more interest in the CEPA than those that have not any business relations with India. However, the results show that they will not enter or expand their business fields in India even though the CEPA starts. It implies that Korean SMEs recognize that the CEPA will not affect their business significantly. Thus, this study has a policy implication for government to adopt/establish policies for SMEs utilizing the CEPA. It includes information services about the CEPA, India markets, a political corporation between the Governments for improving the partnerships in the trade and FDI and so on.
The present experiments were carried out to find out the proper concentration of CEPA(2-chloroethy-lphosphonic acid) for the purpose of accelerating the leaf maturity and of reducing the nicotine content of tobacco. Varried levels of CEPA were sprayed Yellow Special A right after topping. The effects of each level CEPA treatment on leaf ripening and total alkaloid contents were periodically observed. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The higher the CEPA concentration was, the more the leaf maturity was accelerated. During the period from six to 11 days after treatment, the differences of leaf maturity among levels were prominent. 2. Treatment with CEPA only on the upper surface of the tobacco leaf, accelerated the maturity of that particular part treated, but not apparently the other parts of leaf. 3. The higher the CEPA concentration was, the more the accumulation of the total alkaloid was reduced. The reduction of alkaloid accumulation was evident after acceleration of leaf maturity. 4. Distinctive acceleration of leaf maturity was observed in the fully developed lower leaves, while reduction of alkaloid accumulation in the growing upper leaves. The degree of total alkaloid content reduced in the ripened leaves, however, were similer to all the leaves at different positions. 5. Yields of tobacco leaves were not significantly affected by CEPA treatment. 6. In the present experiments, it may be concluded that CEPA2, 000ppm is the most applicable level for accelerating leaf maturity and decreasing total alkaloid content. In the view point of the practical use, however, the applicable level is assumed to be properly choosed between 500 to 2, 000ppm, depending on the situations. 7. The mechanism of accelerating maturity and reducing alkaloid accumulation of tobacco leaves by CEPA, is further to be explored.
Objective: Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease among reproductive-age women. Numerous hypotheses exist regarding the pathogenesis of endometriosis. In Turkey, the consumption of Allium cepa (commonly known as the "onion cure") is a popular treatment employed to alleviate a variety of gynecological disorders. Methods: In this study, our objective was to assess the therapeutic mechanisms of the onion bulb A. cepa using an autologous endometriosis model in Sprague-Dawley rats. Previous research has shown that A. cepa possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiapoptotic properties. We evaluated the pathological condition of endometriotic implants by employing hematoxylin-eosin staining and Ki67 immunohistochemistry analysis. Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) and alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) have been identified as profibrotic markers that are highly overexpressed in endometriotic tissues relative to eutopic endometrial tissue. Furthermore, TGF-β1 influences the differentiation and progression of endometriosis. To quantify profibrotic activity, we measured TGF-β1 and α-SMA using the immunosorbent assay method. Results: Lower histologic evaluation scores for endometriotic implants were observed in the group receiving high-dose A. cepa relative to the other groups. Ki67 expression was reduced following the high-dose A. cepa regimen, which consisted of 30% A. cepa and 70% normal feed. However, no statistically significant differences in TGF-β1 or α-SMA levels were observed among the groups (p=0.7 and p=0.778, respectively). Conclusion: The findings suggest that A. cepa could serve as a therapeutic agent in endometriosis treatment, as evidenced by the reduction in proliferative potential. Nevertheless, A. cepa was not associated with significantly lower levels of endometriosis-associated TGF-β1 or α-SMA.
In many parts of the world Allium cepa, Allium roseum, Trigonella foenum graecum and Curcuma domestica are extensively used as food and are popular in herbal medicine. The four were screened against 26 pathogens and all exhibited broad-spectrum anti-bacterial activity. The aqueous as well as fractionated methanol extract of Allium cepa and A. roseum demonstrated broader level of activity against most of the organisms. On the other hand the unfractionated methanol extracts as well as the fractions of both Trigonella foenum graecum and Curcuma domestica showed broad spectrum of activity. Fractionation was found to improve their level of activity. In both cases the ethyl acetate fractions exhibited higher level of activity. All the materials tested were inactive against any of the four moulds. Allium cepa, Allium roseum, Trigonella foenum graecum and Curcuma domestica are proposed as non toxic, safe, broad spectrum antibacterial agents.
In this study, an ethanol extract being obtained from Allium cepa var. cepa examins the inhibitory effects on the glutathione S-transferase and the separation had been done by silica-gel column chromatography using various eluents, such as ethyl acetate, methanol, and 50% methanol. A volume of column fraction was 50ml and evaporation has been performde by the rotary evaporator under reduced pressure. Each fraction is being examined by thin layer chromatography and the UV spectrum at 365 nm was used to investigate separation patterns of spots on thin layer chromatography. When the eluent was changed, the spot patterns showed another different pattern on thin layer chromatography, so on. Fractions showing similar pattern are combined and eventually, three fractions are obtained. Each fraction is testified to examine the inhibition effects on glutathione S-transferase. All of these showed inhibition effects on glutathione S-transferase. The GC-MS shows that each fraction contains more than 2 compounds.

In order to improve 'Salso' method (conventional tapping method) which was very inefficient in the aspects of collection time and labor, this study was carried out to investigate the effect of the application date and the distance from treatment point in the lactree(Rhus verniciflua) treated with 10% CEPA and to decide the possibility of application of the technique in the field. Bark thickness was significantly increased to the part 40cm above and below the treatment point, but urushiol content was increased to the part 20cm above and 10cm below the zone treated with 10% CEPA. The urushiol content of the bark was highest at 5cm above the treated zone and decreased in the order of 10, 20, and 40cm. And the urushiol contents of the bark of the upper part were higher than that of the low part. The effects of CEPA on bark thickness were similar to urushiol contents. Urushiol production of lactree is highly dependent on climatic conditions and particularly on the precipitation, and duration of sunshine. Ten percent of CEPA-lanolin pastes which was treated on June 16 affected bark anatomy and urushiol contents, while the treatment on August 24 did not affect. In the Rhus verniciflua treated with 10% CEPA, the urushiol contents was initially increased from 7 days after treatment, continued for the 4 weeks, and then slight decrease occurred at 5 weeks after the treatment. We measured a total sap yield by Salso method in lactree treated with 10% CEPA. By applying 10% CEPA, the sap yield was increased 3-4 times compared to that of untreated trees in the first tapping. But the relative ratio was gradually decreased from the second tapping to sixth, and after seventh tapping, the untreated trees secreted more sap than the treated trees. We discussed about the causes.
Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) needs proper post-harvest treatment to prolong its storage life. This study investigated the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the quality and storage life of asparagus. Fresh-harvested asparagus was treated with 1-MCP ($1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), CEPA($10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), and 1-MCP($1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) + CEPA($10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) and compared with an untreated control. The carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) production, ethylene production, and morphological characteristics of the preserved asparagus were observed. The flow-system and the static-type measurement methods for ethylene and $CO_2$ production (respiration rate) were used. Weight loss, respiration rate, degree of freshness, and ethylene production were monitored during storage at $7^{\circ}C$. The results further showed that CEPA (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) treatment had greater effects on $CO_2$ and ethylene production than using the 1-MCP process. The asparagus treated with CEPA or 1-MCP + CEPA had significantly increased the ethylene production rate compared to the control or using only 1-MCP during storage. There were no evident changes in the respiration rate of asparagus under 1-MCP treatment as compared with the control. Using the flow-system, slight differences in the rates of $CO_2$ and ethylene production were noted as compared to using the static type. Findings showed that in using the flow-system, asparagus manifested clearer results as compared with the static type. Weight loss in asparagus was significantly lower in control and 1-MCP treated samples than in those treated with CEPA. Likewise, the $CO_2$ and ethylene production of the CEPA treated samples significantly increased. The 1-MCP treatment reduced the effects of CEPA on weight loss, soluble solids content, and osmolality. The effect was not observed with exogenous ethylene as CEPA treatment had no visible effect as compared to the untreated group. Thus, 1-MCP treatment of asparagus could slightly reduce damage to the quality of asparagus during its distribution where ethylene gas is produced. Therefore, this study suggests that 1-MCP treatment can reduce the damage induced by ethylene gas on asparagus in poor distribution environments.
