Objective: To determine the correlation between cerebral blood flow (CBF) on arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI and the degree of postoperative revascularization assessed on digital subtraction angiography in children with moyamoya disease (MMD). Materials and Methods: Twenty-one children (9 boys and 12 girls; mean age, 8.4 ± 3.6 years; age range, 3-16 years) with MMD who underwent both pseudocontinuous ASL MRI at 1.5T and catheter angiography before and after superficial temporal artery encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis were included in this retrospective study. The degree of revascularization in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory was evaluated on external carotid angiography and was graded on a 3-point scale. On ASL CBF maps, regions of interest were manually drawn over the MCA territory of the operated side at the level of the centrum semi-ovale and over the cerebellum. The normalized CBF (nCBF) was calculated by dividing the CBF of the MCA territory by the CBF of the cerebellum. Changes in nCBFs were calculated by subtracting the preoperative nCBF values from the postoperative nCBF values. The correlation between nCBF changes measured with ASL and the revascularization grade from direct angiography was evaluated. Results: The nCBF value on the operated side increased after the operation (p = 0.001). The higher the degree of revascularization, the greater the nCBF change was: poor revascularization (grade 1), -0.043 ± 0.212; fair revascularization (grade 2), 0.345 ± 0.176; good revascularization (grade 3), 0.453 ± 0.182 (p = 0.005, Jockheere-Terpstra test). The interobserver agreement was excellent for the measured CBF values of the three readers (0.91-0.97). Conclusion: The nCBF values of the MCA territory obtained from ASL MRI increased after the revascularization procedure in children with MMD, and the degree of nCBF change showed a significant correlation with the degree of collateral formation evaluated via catheter angiography.
Three different deconvolution techniques for quantifying cerebral blood flow (CBF) from whole brain $T2^{\ast}-weighted$ bolus tracking images were implemented (parametric Fourier transform P-FT, parametric single value decomposition P-SVD and nonparametric single value decomposition NP-SVD). The techniques were tested on 206 regions from 38 hyperacute stroke patients. In the P-FT and P-SVD techniques, the tissue and arterial concentration time curves were fit to a gamma variate function and the resulting CBF values correlated very well $(CBF_{P-FT}\;=\;1.02{\cdot}CBF_{p-SVD},\;r^2\;=\;0.96)$. The NP-SVD CBF values correlated well with the P-FT CBF values only when a sufficient number of time series volumes were acquired to minimize tracer time curve truncation $(CBF_{P-FT}\;=\;0.92{\cdot}CBF_{NP-SVD},\;r^2\;=\;0.88)$. The correlation between the fitted CBV and the unfitted CBV values was also maximized in regions with minimal tracer time curve truncation $(CBV_{fit}\;=\;1.00{\cdot}CBV_{ Unfit},\;^r^2\;=\;0.89)$. When a sufficient number of time series volumes could not be acquired (due to scanner limitations) to avoid tracer time curve truncation, the P-FT and P-SVD techniques gave more reliable estimates of CBF than the NP-SVD technique.
By their rapid and periodic actions, the cilia of the human respiratory tract play an important role in clearing inhaled noxious particles. Based on the automated image-processing technique, we studied ciliary beat frequency (CBF) objectively and quantitatively. Microscopic ciliary images were transformed into digitized gray ones through an image-grabber, and from these we extracted signals or CBF. By means of a FFT, maximum peak frequencies were detected as CBFs in each partitioned block or the entire digitized field. With these CBFs, we composed distribution maps visualiy showing the spatial distribution of CBFs. Through distribution maps of CBF, the whole aspects of CBF changes or cells and the difference of CBF of neighboring cells can be easily measured and detected. Histogram statistics calculated from the user-defined polygonal window can show the local dominant frequency presumed to be the CBF of a cell or a crust the region includes.
Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the effects of acupuncturing $PC_8$ used perpendicular needling method determine the mechanism of action of acupuncturing $PC_8$ by measuring the changes of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in normal rats. Methods : This study also investigated the effects of acupuncturing $PC_8$ on the change of rCBF in cerebral ischemic rats, and revealed the mechanism of its action. In addition, the effects of acupuncturing $PC_8$ on focal ischemic brain injury was studied in cerebral ischemic rats. Results : 1. Acupuncturing $PC_8$ significantly increase rCBF but decreased MABP in normal rats. 2. Acupuncturing $PC_8$ increased of rCBF was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with indomethacin (1mg/kg, i.p.), an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase in normal rats. 3. Acupuncturing $PC_8$ increased of rCBF was significantly inhibited by pretreatment methylene blue (10 ${\mu}g$/kg, i.p.), an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase in normal rats. 4. Acupuncturing $PC_8$ was significantly improved the rCBF than control group increased unstable in cerebral ischemic rats. 5. Acupuncturing $PC_8$ was not significantly improved the rCBF than control group by pretreatment with indomethacin (1mg/kg, i.p.), an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase in cerebral ischemic rats. 6. Acupuncturing $PC_8$ was significantly increased the rCBF than control group by pretreatment methylene blue ($10{\mu}g$/kg, i.p.), an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase in cerebral ischemic rats. Conclusions : In conclusion, our study suggested that acupuncturing $PC_8$ can increase rCBF in normal state, and improve stability of rCBF in ischemic state. In addition, we suggested that mechanisms related with acupuncturing $PC_8$ was involved in the guanylate cyclase pathway.
