  • DMSO-oxalyl chloride at low temperature in methylene chloride reacted with isolated secondary hydroxyl groups in some monosaccharides to give alkoxysulfonium salts, convertible to carbonyls in high yields upon addition of triethylamine. And 1, 2:5, 6-di-O-isopropylidene-.alpha.- D-allofuranose which is the key intermediate in the synthesis of 3-O-acetyl-5-O-benzoyl- 2-deoxy-2- fluoro-D-arabinofuranosyl bromide, was also obtained by oxidizing 1, 2:5, 6-di-O-isopropylidene-.alpha.- D-glucofuranose with the oxidizing reagent, followed by reduction with sodium borohydride.

  • The Compositions of the free sugars in Korean Ginseng were determined by use of the ion exchange chromatography and anthrone reaction. The free sugars were sucrose, fructose and glucose. The contents of each sugar in dried and wet Ginseng were Sucrose: 8.525 and 5.280, Fructose: 0.498 and 0.245, glucose: 0.433 and 0.975, respectively.

  • As one of projects of this Institute, 330 species of plants which are currently used as herb drugs in Korea were screened for the presence of alkaloids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, chalcones, lactones, glycosides, carbohydrates, terpenoids, steroids, proteins, polypeptides, saponins, and organic acids. The most reliable presence of alkaloids detected by thin layer chromatography is presented by screening of 52 species.

  • The effects of environmental factors on the extracellular release of organic carbon by Scenedesmus qudricauda were studied. The PER (percentage extracellular release) was greater at high temperature and at high concentration of nitrogen and phosphate. The PER variation according to the change of M/P ratio showed high values at each extreme N/P ratio. This result suggested that the limitation of nitrogen or phosphorous resulted in the accumulation of carbohydrates as photosynthetic products, and the products in high concentration were excreted through algal cell membrane.

  • By this time, various shapes and materials are used in Artificial Reef. A function of Artificial Reef is leading of fishes by adhesion of seaweeds, however, this effect was not enough. In this study, porous concrete containing function materials (protein, carbohydrates, and fat etc.) are investigated to maximize leading effect of fishes. For these, the mechanical characteristics of porous concrete are investigated with void contents and function materials. Also, the diffusion of function materials are compared to suggest the suitable content of functional material.

  • Heteropolysaccharides isolated from liquid cultures of nine Tremella species contained 0.3 to 1.2% protein, 2.7 to 5% ash, 0.9 to 3.4% acetyl groups, 76.5 to 84.2% carbohydrates and trace amounts of starch. The polysaccharides in aqueous solution were slightly acidic (pH 5.1 to 5.6). They consisted of the following monomeric sugars: fucose, ribose, xylose, arabinose, mannose, galactose, glucose and glucuronic acid. The backbones of the polysaccharide structures consisted of $\alpha$-(1$\rightarrow$3)-links while the side chains were $\beta$-linked.

  • The abundance of carbohydrates in nature with diverse roles in biological systems makes them a subject of considerable interest. They exhibit biological effects. ranging from cellular regulation to the selective inhibition of enzymes with key roles in living organisms. A wide range of carbocyclic polyhydroxyls has significant therapeutic effects, examples of which include cyclohexane hexitols, such as inositols, and pseudo-sugars, such as cyclophellitol and valienamine.
