  • KARI has prepared Calibration and Validation activities for the KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2) MSC data that will be launched at the end of this year. Firstly, we divided the Cal/Val activities of it to four parts, Spatial, Spectral, Radiometric and Geometric, and defmed the detailed Cal/Val items from them. Secondly, Cal/Val targets have been defined and manufactured for the role of them. Thirdly, we have made the plan and the procedure for the Cal/Val items, developed the codes for them, studied more detailed method to do them, and trained the Cal/Val activities using the foreign satellite image data by ourselves. KARI has been now setting up the KOMPSAT-2 LEOP plan with the Cal/Val activities, and probably will finish the EOP Cal/Val activities for the KOMPSAT-2 MSC data by the next April or May.

  • KOMPSAT-5 that will be launched at the end of 2008 has a SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) payload. Since the Calibration and Validation of a satellite SAR is different from a passive optical camera as KOMPSAT-2 MSC and KOMPSAT-3 payload, we have started from the basis of SAR system. Firstly, the general SAR Cal/Val parameters have been gathered and defined. Secondly, we have been choosing the Cal/Val parameters suitable to KOMPSAT-5. Thirdly, the methods of SAR Cal/Val with the parameters have been studied. Fourthly, the requirement of Cal/Val devices and Cal/Val site has been studied.

  • Generally there is a technical gap for the image data quality between from the satellite requirement values and from the users. After Cal/Val for KOMPSAT-3 had been done by Dec. 31, 2012, all requirements for KOMPSAT-3 image data quality have been validated, and then the normal operation of it started from Jan. 2013. In the normal period, the image data quality for the users has been defined and managed, and according to the result of it, the additional Cal/Val items have been doing. Cal/Val team and Processing team in KARI made the quality report (QR) for KOMPSAT-3 image data quality for the users, and have determined the quality level of KOMPSAT-3 product generated by Processing system (PMS; Product Management System) and managed the quality report for it. According to the result of the quality report, Cal/Val team defined six additional Cal/Val items, and has done five items of them and has been implementing the result of them into the Processing system.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) performed field campaigns for absolute radiometric calibration with overpassing of satellite Orbview-3 on Cal/ Val site in Goheung and Daejeon. The performed Cal/Val method is the reflectance-based of vicarious calibration methods. We collected ground-based and meteology data such as temperature, surface pressure and reflectance of targets, and radiosonde data only collected on Goheung. Data collected on each field served as input to radiative transfer codes to generate a top-of-atmosphere(TOA) radiance. Derived TOA is compared with DN of overpassing satellite Orbview-3 to calculate calibration coefficient of gain and offset. Also, This study proposed a proper method to prepare absolute radiometic calibration of KOMPSAT-2 by using experience of Field campaign.

  • Since the successful launch of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II) in February 2020, various studies for improving the accuracies of the product have been underway through full-scale Cal/Val (calibration and validation) activities. This special issue examines the algorithm for GOCI-II data quality management at present, two years after the start of studies on Cal/Val and algorithm improvement of GOCI-II data, and introduces accuracy improvement and application progress along with the related research results. We expect that highly accurate data will be provided and utilized through continuous Cal/Val activities for GOCI-II data.

  • We summarize the activities concerning to the space-borne microwave radiometer (RAD) calibration and validation (Cal/Val) in China. It is important to know in advance the brightness temperature of a given sea surface before external calibrating RAD due to its special characteristic of system. In the paper, we analyse some modeling results on sea surface emissivity and atmospheric transmissivity at different frequencies, and compare the calculated brightness temperatures with those measurements from some air-borne microwave radiometers. We also introduced the whole contents on RAD Val and developed two methods of retrieving sea surface winds. We compared the retrievals of wind speeds to those from NDBC buoys. At last, we introduce some plans of Cal/Val for testing our RAD.

  • The LEOP Cal/Val (Launch and Early Operation Phase Calibration/Validation) was carried out during 6 months after KOMPSAT-3A (KOMPSAT-3A Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3A) was launched in March 2015. After LEOP Cal/Val was successfully completed, high resolution KOMPSAT-3A has been successfully distributing to users over the past 8 years. The sub-meter high-resolution satellite image data obtained from KOMPSAT-3A is used as basic data for qualitative and quantitative information extraction in various fields such as mapping, GIS (Geographic Information System), and national land management, etc. The KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) periodically checks and manages the quality of KOMPSAT-3A's product and the characteristics of satellite hardware to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information extracted from satellite data of KOMPSAT-3A. To minimize the deterioration of image quality due to aging of satellite hardware, payload and attitude sensors of KOMPSAT-3A, continuous improvement of image quality has been carried out. In this paper, the Cal/Val work-flow defined in the KOMPSAT-3A development phase was illustrated for the period of before and after the launch. The MTF, SNR, and location accuracy are the key parameters to estimate image quality and the methods of the measurements of each parameter are also described in this work. On the basis of defined quality parameters, the performance was evaluated and measured during the period of after LEOP Cal/Val. The current status and characteristics of MTF, SNR, and location accuracy of KOMPSAT-3A from 2016 to May 2020 were described as well.

  • The Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2) was launched in July 2006 and The main mission of the KOMPSAT-2 is a high resolution imaging for the cartography of Korea peninsula by utilizing Multi Spectral Camera (MSC) images. The camera resolutions are 1 m in panchromatic scene and 4 m in multi-spectral imaging. KOMPSAT-2 measure the position, velocity and attitude data of satellite using by star sensor, gyro sensor, and GPS sensor. This paper provides an initial geometric accuracy assessment of the KOMPSAT-2 high resolution image, both geometric Cal/Val overview.

  • The payload can be classified as a passive and active type. Generally radar satellite to acquire specific information through various radar images will use the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) as active type payload. the principal of SAR satellite is to receive the signal returned from certain objects and/or surfaces in order to construct an radar image. The data acquired from the satellite in its real orbit shall be needed to perform successful CAL/VAL (Calibration & Validation) because the SAR satellite have to receive the returned signal for SAR image construction. In order to do the above, the returned signal shall be related to ground targets. Especially ground target is the corner reflector (CR) for CAL/VAL. Generally the reflector has various types and shapes. Their selection can be dependent on characteristics and mission objectives of SAR satellite. In this paper, reflector focused on the optimal case and effective case has been studied and then the trihedral corner reflector under this study has been designed and its performance also analyzed.
