In mechanical design, optimization procedures have mostly been implemented solely by CAE codes combined by optimization routine, in which the model is built, analyzed and optimized. In the complex geometries, however, CAD is indispensable tool for the efficient and accurate modeling. This paper presents a method to carry out optimization, in which CAD and CAE are used for modeling and analysis respectively and integrated in an optimization routine. Application Programming Interface (API) function is exploited to automate CAD modeling, which enables direct access to CAD. The advantage of this method is that the user can create very complex object in Parametric and automated way, which is impossible in CAE codes. Unigraphics and ANSYS are adopted as CAD and CAE tools. In ANSYS, automated analysis is done using codes made by a script language, APDL(ANSYS Parametric Design Language). Optimization is conducted by VisualDOC and IDESIGN respectively. As an illustrative example, a mold design problem is studied, which is to minimize temperature deviation over a diagonal line of the surface of the mold in contact with hot glass.

PURPOSE. The goal of this study was to compare the adhesion of Candida albicans to the surfaces of CAD/CAM and conventionally fabricated complete denture bases. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty discs of acrylic resin poly (methyl methacrylate) were fabricated with CAD/CAM and conventional procedures (heat-polymerized acrylic resin). The specimens were divided into two groups: 10 discs were fabricated using the CAD/CAM procedure (Wieland Digital Denture Ivoclar Vivadent), and 10 discs were fabricated using a conventional flasking and pressure-pack technique. Candida colonization was performed on all the specimens using four Candida albicans isolates. The difference in Candida albicans adhesion on the discs was evaluated. The number of adherent yeast cells was calculated by the colony-forming units (CFU) and by Fluorescence microscopy. RESULTS. There was a significant difference in the adhesion of Candida albicans to the complete denture bases created with CAD/CAM and the adhesion to those created with the conventional procedure. The CAD/CAM denture bases exhibited less adhesion of Candida albicans than did the denture bases created with the conventional procedure (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The CAD/CAM procedure for fabricating complete dentures showed promising potential for reducing the adherence of Candida to the denture base surface. Clinical Implications. Complete dentures made with the CAD/CAM procedure might decrease the incidence of denture stomatitis compared with conventional dentures.
In manufacturing press die with free surface, grinding operation is an important post process for surface finish and dimensional accuracy. With the advancement of NC technology. surface grinding operation is increasingly replaced by the gantry type manipulator. As the mechanics for grinding operation is different from machining operation, conventional CAM system for machining operation is hard to apply. In this. paper, we develop a five-axis CAM system by which an efficient gantry trajectory can be planned and verified. The developed system consists of four conceptual modules; namely CAD, PROCESS. CAM, and ANALYSIS. In the CAD module, the machined surface is represented by CL-data or surface modeler, and process parameters are specified by the PROCESS module. Then, the CAM module generates a series of grinding paths based on the grinding mechanics together with process databases for tool spaces and grinding conditions. The generated paths are verified via ANALYSIS module. Validation via real experiments is left for further study.

The linkage framework of geometric modeling based on NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface and shell finite analysis is developed in the present study. For this purpose, geometrically exact shell finite element is implemented. NURBS technology is employed to obtain the exact geometric quantities for the analysis. Especially, because NURBS is the most powerful and wide-spread method to represent general surfaces in the field of computer graphics and CAD(Computer Aided Design) industry, the direct computation of surface geometric quantities from the NURBS surface equation without approximation shows great potential for the integration between geometrically exact shell finite element and geometric modeling in the CAD systems. Some numerical examples are given to verify the performance and accuracy of the developed linkage framework. In additions, trimmed surfaces with some cutouts are considered for more practical applications.
In this present work, trimmed surface analysis for the 2D elasticity problem is presented. The main benefit of the proposed method is that no additional modeling for analysis of a trimmed surface is necessary. As the first attempt to deal with a trimmed surface in spline FEM, the information of the trimming curve and trimmed surface exported from CAD system is directly utilized for analysis. For this, trimmed elements are searched through employing projection scheme. For the integration of the trimmed elements, NURBSenhanced integration scheme which is used in NEFEM is adopted. The quadtree refinement of integration cell is performed for the complicated trimmed cases. The information of trimming curve is used for obtaining integration points as well as constructing stiffness matrix. The robustness and effectiveness of the proposed method are investigated by presenting various numerical examples.
The CAD/CAM system for the manufacturing automation is the newest technology in mechanical engineering area and becomes the important research subject nowadays. Most of all hardwares and softwares for the CAD/CAM system used in the our manufacturing companies such as automobile company are developed by the foreign country and the purchasing price of them is very expensive but their applicability to a certain area is very limited. This study was conducted to develope a CAD/CAM system for the design and the automatic manufacturing of the iron pattern shaped with 3 - dimensional free curved surface, and to test its applicability to the design and the manufacturing of the rotary blade. The results obtained from the study are as follow; 1. The CAD system which can process graphic procedures from the free curved surface shaped data was developed with personal computer. 2. The CAM main program was developed. This main program could produce CL data from CAD data file by checking the tool interference according to the cutting mode. 3. The sub. program which can simulate the tool trace from the CL data was developed. 4. The post processor for the Deckel FP2NC NC milling machine from CL data file was developed and the sub program could transmit NC program through modem to NC milling machine was developed. 5. The developed CAM system seemed to be applicable to any other system. Because the measuring results of the cross sectional thickness of the plastic model from the manufacturing iron pattern by the system showed that this system could properly check the tool interference. 6. In took 75~90 hours to manufacture two iron patterns of rotary blade. For the sake of convenience in applying to the other systems, this system was developed in BASIC and FORTRAN computer language and minimum portion of machine language as possible.

Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate fluoride release and the micro-shear bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) in casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP)-remineralized caries-affected dentin (CAD). Materials and Methods: Exposed dentin surfaces of 30 human third molar teeth were divided into 2 equal groups for evaluating fluoride release and the micro-shear bond strength of RMGIC to CAD. Each group was subdivided into 3 equal subgroups: 1) control (sound dentin); 2) artificially demineralized dentin (CAD); 3) CPP-ACP remineralized dentin (remineralized CAD). To measure fluoride release, 15 disc-shaped specimens of RMGIC (4 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were bonded on one flat surface of the dentin discs of each group. Fluoride release was tested using ion chromatography at different intervals; 24 hours, 3, 5, 7 days. RMGIC micro-cylinders were built on the flat dentin surface of the 15 discs, which were prepared according to the assigned group. Micro-shear bond strength was measured after 24 hours water storage. Data were analyzed using 1- and 2-way analysis of variance and the post hoc least significant difference test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Fluoride detected in solutions (at all intervals) and the micro-shear bond strength of RMGIC bonded to CPP-ACP-remineralized dentin were significantly higher than those bonded to artificial CAD (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Demineralized CAD consumes more fluoride released from RMGIC into the solution for remineralization than CPP-ACP mineralized dentin does. CPP-ACP increases the micro-shear bond strength of RMGIC to CAD.
Objective: To assess shear bond strength and failure mode (Adhesive Remnant Index, ARI) of orthodontic brackets bonded to polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) blocks for computer-aided design/manufacture (CAD/CAM) fabrication of temporary restorations, following substrate chemical or mechanical treatment. Methods: Two types of PMMA blocks were tested: $CAD-Temp^{(R)}$ (VITA) and $Telio^{(R)}$ CAD (Ivoclar-Vivadent). The substrate was roughened with 320-grit sandpaper, simulating a fine-grit diamond bur. Two universal adhesives, Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SU) and Assure Plus (AP), and a conventional adhesive, Transbond XT Primer (XTP; control), were used in combination with Transbond XT Paste to bond the brackets. Six experimental groups were formed: (1) $CAD-Temp^{(R)}/SU$; (2) $CAD-Temp^{(R)}/AP$; (3) $CAD-Temp^{(R)}/XTP$; (4) $Telio^{(R)}$ CAD/SU; (5) $Telio^{(R)}$ CAD/AP; (6) $Telio^{(R)}$ CAD/XTP. Shear bond strength and ARI were assessed. On 1 extra block for each PMMA-based material surfaces were roughened with 180-grit sandpaper, simulating a normal/medium-grit ($100{\mu}m$) diamond bur, and brackets were bonded. Shear bond strengths and ARI scores were compared with those of groups 3, 6. Results: On $CAD-Temp^{(R)}$ significantly higher bracket bond strengths than on $Telio^{(R)}$ CAD were recorded. With XTP significantly lower levels of adhesion were reached than using SU or AP. Roughening with a coarser bur resulted in a significant increase in adhesion. Conclusions: Bracket bonding to CAD/CAM PMMA can be promoted by grinding the substrate with a normal/medium-grit bur or by coating the intact surface with universal adhesives. With appropriate pretreatments, bracket adhesion to CAD/CAM PMMA temporary restorations can be enhanced to clinically satisfactory levels.
Comprehensive prosthetic treatment requires considerations from various points of view. The anterior guidance is important factor in prosthodontic treatment of anterior teeth. Lingual surface contour of anterior restoration is so critical that a small mistake of laboratory or clinical process can cause discomfort of patient and disharmony of entire dentition. There are no guidelines for lingual surface contour that fit all patients. Therefore the lingual surface of provisional restoration is most accurately described as a customized one. The dentist transfers the exact information of anterior guidance that has made through long term provisional restoration to the technician. This case introduce that the duplication technique of CAD/CAM system to reproduce the anterior guidance of provisional restoration. This method can improve satisfaction of both patient and dentist.
