  • A computer-aided process planning (CAPP) system for rotationally symmetric deep drawing products has been developed. The application for non-axisymmetric components, however, has not been reported yet. Therefore, this study investigates process sequence design in deep drawing process and constructs an expert system of process planning for non-axisymmetric motor frame products with elliptical shape. The system developed consists of four modules. The first one is recognition of shape module to recognize the products. The second one is a 3-D modeling module to calculate surface area for non-axisymmetric products. The third one is a blank design module that creates an oval-shaped blank with the identical surface area. The forth one is a process planning module based on production rules that play the best important role in an expert system for manufacturing. The production rules are generated and upgraded by interviewing with field engineers. The constructed system using AutoLISP language under the AutoCAD environment is baled on the knowledge base system which is involved a lot of expert's technology. Results of this system will be provide effective aids to the designer and engineer in this field.

  • Endmill fillet cutting at the corner was conducted with the online measurement of cutting forces and tool deflection by a tool dynamometer and an eddy current sensor system. The profile of the machined surface was also compared with the CAD profile with a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and CALYPSO software. It was found that the end mill cutter with four blades has a better surface profile than that with two blades, and the cutting forces and tool deformation were increased as the cutting speed was increased. When the tool located at the degree $45^{\circ}$ corner was found to conduct the maximum cutting force than started to the point of the workpiece. As it was compared with the CMM and ANOVA analysis result in the case that the cutting force and tool deformation was the maximum, it was found that the result was affected by the spindle speed and the number of blades.

  • A finite element analysis-based approach which investigates the causes of the breakdown in the outer ring of the choke at hot rod rolling mill is presented. Two-dimensional drawings of the whole vertical-type mill stand are transformed into three-dimensional CAD models. Non-linear elasto-plastic deformation analysis of material at the roll gap is performed for computing roll force and torque of the work roll. Then, the reaction forces of the bearing rings together with a set of roller bearings that support the work roll are obtained by means of rigid body motion analysis. Finally, stress behaviors in the bearing rings together with a set of roller bearings that support the work roll are investigated by linear elastic analysis. Results reveal that stress at the contact area between the outer ring and roller bearing is extraordinary high when an internal gap between an external surface of the outer ring and the internal surface of the chock due to wear of the inside of the chock occurs.

  • Stereolithography is the technique using a laser beam to cure a liquid resin, a photopolymer, with three dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) data. The build parameters of stereolithography such as beam size, scan velocity. hatch spacing, layer thickness and etc. are determined by the accuracy of prototype, the build time and the cured properties of the resin. In particular, beam size is important processing parameter fur the other parameters. Therefore, this study observed the cured property to beam size. For this purpose, according to hatch spacing and beam size, the cure width and depth were measured on single cured line. Also, the cure width and depth were measured at single cured layer As a result of experiments. cure depth which varied from 0.23mm to 0.34mm was directly proportioned to beam radius. on the other hand, cure width which varied from 0.42mm to 1.07mm was inversely proportioned to beam radius. Surface roughness varied from 1.12 to 2.23 m for the ratio of hatch spacing to beam radius.

  • This paper deals with thermal characteristic analysis of induction motors for machine tool spindle for motion error prediction. Firstly, the inverse design of general induction motors for machine tool spindle has been performed by design principles. Characteristics considering VVVF inverter of induction motors were analyzed. Secondary, power loss and thermal characteristics of induction motors analyzed by equivalent thermal resistance model from Motor-CAD S/W. To develop a second-order fitted power-loss distribution model for the constant-torque operating range of the induction motor, we employed the design of experiment and response surface methodology techniques. Finally, the analysis results were experimentally verified, and the validity of the proposed analysis method was confirmed.

  • A novel rapid prototyping (RP) process, an automated transfer type variable lamination manufacturing process (Automated VLM-ST) has been developed. In Automated VLM-ST, a vacuum chuck and linear moving system transfer the plate type material with two pilot holes to the rotation stage. A four-axis synchronized hotwire cutter cuts the material twice to generate Automated Unit Shape Layer (AUSL) with the desired width, side slopes, length, and two reference shapes in accordance with CAD data. Each AUSL is stacked on the stacking plate with two pilot pins using the pilot holes in AUSL and the pilot pins. Subsequently, adhesive is supplied to the top surface of the stacked AUSL by a bonding roller and pressure is simultaneously applied to the bottom surface of the stacked AUSL. Finally, three-dimensional shapes are rapidly fabricated. This paper describes the procedure for generating the cutting path data (AUSL data) f3r automated VLM-ST. The method for the generation of the Automated Unit Shape Layer (AUSL) in Automated VLM-ST was practically applied and fabricated for a various shapes.

  • Purpose: In this study, the marginal fitness of ceramic Co-Cr metal crown made by precision casting, milling, and selective laser melting method were compared. Methods: The ceramic Co-Cr metal crown manufactured by precision casting used the lost wax(LC specimen) method. The abutment were scanned and then made by milling(CM specimen), selective laser melting(CS specimen) method. The specimen were cut bucco-lingual and mesio-distal, and absolute marginal discrepancy and marginal gap were measured using a digital microscope. The surface roughness of the crown was also observed. Results: On the bucco-lingual axial, absolute marginal discrepancy was the LC specimen $31.72({\pm}4.58){\mu}m$, the CM specimen $78.29({\pm}3.28){\mu}m$ and the CS specimen $143.13({\pm}3.83){\mu}m$, respectively. On the bucco-lingual axial, marginal gap was the LC specimen $22.70({\pm}1.46){\mu}m$, the CM specimen $22.70({\pm}1.49){\mu}m$ and CS specimen $99.60({\pm}1.57){\mu}m$, respectively. Conclusion: For ceramic Co-Cr metal crowns, LC specimen was superior for absolute marginal discrepancy and marginal gap. The surface of metal crowns by selective laser melting were the roughest.

  • Domain mapping is a bijective transformation of one domain to another, usually from a complicated general domain to a chosen convex domain. This is directly useful in many application problems like shape modeling, morphing, texture mapping, shape matching, remeshing, path planning etc. A new approach considering the domain as made up of structural elements, like membranes or trusses, is developed and implemented using the nonlinear finite element formulation. The mapping is performed in two stages, boundary mapping and inside mapping. The boundary of the 3-D domain is mapped to the surface of a convex domain (in this case, a sphere) in the first stage and then the displacement/distortion of this boundary is used as boundary conditions for mapping the interior of the domain in the second stage. This is a general method and it develops a bijective mapping in all cases with judicious choice of material properties and finite element analysis. The consistent global parameterization produced by this method for an arbitrary genus zero closed surface is useful in shape modeling. Results are convincing to accept this finite element structural approach for domain mapping as a good method for many purposes.

  • Geometry of a screw fabricated by a turning process determined by the shape of the tool, feed rate of the tool and rotation speed of the spindle. Therefore, computing the exact geometry of the screw is very important to perform a simulation on machining or an evaluation of the workpice quality. In this paper, a new mathematical geometry model of the 3 dimensional screw is fabricated by turning process introduced for the exact geometry computation. Becasue model has a parametric formulation, it is easy to process for a CAD geometry or apply for a machining simulation. Also, it can be applied to process planning because it gives precise machined geometry on whole the 3 dimensional surface of the screw. This paper introduces a new parametric model of a geometry for screw fabricated by turning process. As an application, a simulation software for the 3 dimensional screw surface is developed and evaluated for several manufacturing parameters.
