For an efficient remediation of Pb-contaminated soil (S-1) in a clay shooting range, a soil washing test was performed with mineral acid, organic acid, chelating agent, and chloride. The Pb extraction efficiency of extractant (0.1 M) used in the washing test showed the order of HCl > $Na_2$-EDTA > NTA > DTPA > citric acid > malic acid > succinic acid > acetic acid > $CaCl_2$ > $MgCl_2$, for S-1 soil. As compared to initial Pb concentration, extraction efficiency by the concentration of extractant was 93.35%, 80.80%, 73.92%, and 24.57% in S-1 soil for HCl (0.5 M, pH 1.10), $Na_2$-EDTA (0.01 M, pH 3.99), citric acid (0.5 M, pH 1.27), and $MgCl_2$ (0.1 M, pH 8.82), respectively. S-1 soil had 56.83% of residue form and 43.17% of non-residue form (18.04% of exchangeable form), respectively. Although the concentrations of these fractions sharply decreased after HCl washing, since the exchangeable forms with relatively large mobility are still distributed as high as 18.78% (to Pb total content in residual soils) in S-1 soil, it is necessary to devise a proper management plan for residual soils after soil washing application.
To find out the influence of mineral nutritions and phosphorus concentration to ferrous absorption of rice and barley plants were studied in the culture solution which has various levels of ferrous and phosphorus with deficiency of mineral nuritiont. The ferrous absorption of rice and barley plants were greatly affected by phosphorus and potassium in the culture solution among mineral nutritions. The ferrous absorption was decreased with the increasing of phosphorus concentration. The rate of ferrous translocation was higher in barley plant than that of rice plant. And also, the symptoms of ferrous toxicity occurred easily in the barley plant. From these results, it was concluded that the ferrous was more influential upon the growth of barley than that of rice.
Samples of 13 species of forest tree leaves fed to livestock in the semi-hilly arid zone of Punjab State in India were collected at 30 d interval for 12 months, in order to assess their nutritional worth for livestock. The ground samples were pooled for 4 different seasons viz. dry hot, hot humid, fall and winter. The chemical composition irrespective of the season revealed that CP content varied between 8.9 (Carrisa) to 22.0% (Leucaena). Globulin was the major protein fraction in most of the leaves. The lowest concentration of cell wall constituents was observed in Morus alba and Grewea. The leaves in general became fiberous and lignified during winter and fall as compared to summer season. The leaves of Grewea, Morus alba, Leucaena, Carrisa and Acacia were rich in Ca, P and most of the trace elements. The total phenolics ranged between 1.88% (Azardirachta) to 15.82% (Acacia). The leaves of Acacia had the highest concentration of hydrolysable tannins (14.6%) whereas that of Carrisa had that of condensed tannins (5.9%). The condensed tannins (more than 3%) were negatively correlated to the digestibility of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and crude protein (CP). The digestion kinetic parameters for DM, NDF and CP revealed that leaves of Morus alba, Zizyphus and Ehretia had highest insoluble but potentially degradable fraction. The minimum rumen fill values also revealed that leaves of Grewea, Azardirachta, Morus, Ehretia and Leucaena had great potential for voluntary DM intake. The leaves of Ougeinia, Malha, Dodenia and Carrisa had significantly higher rumen fill value indicating poor potential for voluntary DM intake. Season did not have any significant impact on digestion kinetic parameters except that most of the leaves had low potentially degradable fraction, which was degraded at slow rate during winter. It was concluded that the leaves of Morus, Ehretia, Grewea and Leucaena had great potential as livestock feed, while feeding of Ougeinia, Malha and Dodonea leaves should be avoided.
The purpose of this study to investigate the relationship between nutrient intake and serum lipid levels in 165 healthy women in Taegu. A convenient method was to assess nutritional intake. Anthropometric measurement of body weight and height were measured and average energy expenditure calculated . The mean body mass index (BMI) was 23.4$\pm$3.1 and it was higher than the mean BMI of Korean women. Obesity rates for the study subjects were 15.7% by RBW (relative body weight : >120%) and 28.5% by BMI(body mass index) ; >25). Daily energy intake was sufficient at 106% of recommended dietary allowances and the energy percentage ration of carbohydrate , fat and protein was 68 : 18 : 14. Mean intake of vitamin A, B1 , niacin , and Ca were higher than RDA. The incidence of hypertension(>140mmHg) and hypercholoesterolemia(>240mg/dl) as 18.2% and 23.6% of the subjects, respectively . Postmenopasusal women showed significantly higher blood pressure, RBW, and ALP (alkaline phosphatase) than premenopausal women. The concentration of cholesterol and average blood pressure in the irregular meal eater group were significantly higher than in the regular meal eater group. Skipping meals and unenvendurnal distribution(no breakfast, or no lunch , and large evening meals) are associated with high total cholesterol level in this population . Especially, the atherogenic index was significantly lower in the regular meal eater group than that in irregular meal eaters. The values for serum cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure, BMI, and atherogenic index increased with age in middle-aged women. There was a highly significant correlation between body weight and plasma lipids. HDL -cholesterol was inversely correlated with BMI. The above dta provides valuable information for community program planning and health providers who work with individual female and adults to meet their nutrietional needs to control blood lipids.
To improve a new yeast strain capable of converting xylan to ethanol directly, we tried protoplast fusion between xylose fermenting yeast (Candida sp. X-6-41) and xylan assimilating yeast (Crypto-coccus sp. XB-33), finally selected the most promising two fusants (XFU-1 and XFU-2). As the optimum conditions for protoplast formation, the yeast cells were cultured to exponential phase in YPD and YPX containing 0.6M KCI, respectively, and then treated with zymolyase (0.25mg/$m\ell$), cellulase(4mg/$m\ell$) and 100mM 2-mercaptoethanol at pH 8 and 3$0^{\circ}C$. The protoplasts of parental auxotrophs were fused in the presence of 20mM CaCl$_2$and 40% polyethylene glycol(M.W.4000). The physiological and morphological characteristics of the fusants, such as assimilation of carbon sources, cell size, growth rate, xylanase activity and xylan fermentation ability were investigated. Xylanase activity of fusants that cultured in chemically minimal medium was higher than that of fusants that cultured in completed medium, because xylanase producing activity of xylose fermenting yeast(X-6-41) was inhibited by isoleucine.
In this study, for enhancing the durability of permeable pavement material polyurethane(PU) adhesives were developed, and the physical properties upon polymerization and additives were studied. PU polymerization followed the bulk polymerization of free solvent type considering ecological aspect. Additives used in this study were carbon black, calcium carbonate and ultra violet stabilizer. The property changes upon different environment were evaluated with the compressive strength which is the principal measurement of the property of pavement materials. Among polymerized PU, one formulated with esterpolyol and crosslinkable chain extender gave the highest compressive strength of $74.9kgf/cm^2$, better than commercial $60kgf/cm^2$. The strength was the highest when the material specimen contained carbon black and calcium carbonate 20 wt%, respectively. However, UV stabilizer did not show good weathering properties.

We carried out this study to investigate differences of physiological variables between patients with (DM group) and without type II diabetes mellitus (Non-DM group) undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG). Postoperative $Mg^{++}$ and $Ca^{++}$ levels were lower, whereas $Na^+$ level was higher in DM group than those in Non-DM group. ICU (intensive care unit) stay time in DM group was longer than that of Non-DM group. Postoperative platelet counts tended to decrease, whereas C-reactive protein (CRP) and cardiac troponin-I (cTNI) levels tended to increase in DM group compared with Non-DM group. Postoperative albumin level was lower, while blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine levels were greater in DM group than those in Non-DM group. DM group had higher incidence of post-operative arrhythmias than Non-DM group. These results reveal that type II DM patients undergoing OPCAB may have higher incidences of postoperative hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia and arrhythmias, and increases of CRP, cTNI, BUN, and creatinine levels than in Non-DM patients undergoing OPCAB. The perioperative check and control (supplement) of $Mg^{++}$ levels should be considered in cardiovascular surgery combined with DM.
Changes in the nutritional components of Toha-jeot, salt-fermented Toha shrimp (Caridina denticulata denticulata $D_EH_{AAN}$), which was salted with a low-salt group of 15% sodium chloride (L), a high-salt group of 23% sodium chloride (H), a 50% conventional soybean sauce group (S) during long fermentation were investigated. These three groups were refrigerated at ${4\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and then taken out for analysis at three month intervals during 9 month. Even in the process of a long fermentation, the moisture containment of Toha-jeot in group L and S is 76.0~73.6% and in group H it is 70.0%, which are similar in all three groups. In case of the salinity, there was no change in groups L, H but it was lowered in group S during the fermentation. In all groups there was no change of pH. The free amino acid contents in Toha-jeot, of which ornitine, glutamic acid, leucine, alanine, lysine and valine occupy the majority, in order of abundance, increased gradually up to six months of fermentation and decreased by nine months. But free amino acid contents of S group increased continuously during the fermentation process. Hypoxanthine was altered almost among other nucleotides. ATP was not detected, IMP and inosine had disappeared after the six months for mentation. ADP was not detected after the nine months fermentation. Monoene, polyene and n-3 fatty acids were increased and saturated fatty acids were decreased in L and H groups. However, no changes of fatty acid contents in S group during fermentation were showed. The fatty acid contents of three groups, of which $C_{18:1},\;C_{16:0},\;C_{16:1}$ and $C_{20:5}$ occupy the majority, Mineral content of Toha-jeot is mainly consisted of Na, Ca, K and Mg. In the Hunter values, the redness of L group was superior to that of other groups.
Background: Cholangiocarcinoma (CHCA) is serious public health problem in Thailand, especially in the northeastern and northern regions. CHCA is known as one of the most aggressive malignant tumors associated with local invasion and a high rate of metastasis. A crucial step in the invasion process is the proteolytic degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and basal membranes, for which several studies have shown a critical role played by matrix metalloproteinase-11 (MMP-11). Objective: This study aim to detect MMP-11 expression in CHCA specimens and any correlation with survival time. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 30 patients with CHCA in Rajvithi hospital, who had undergone immunohistochemical staining of MMP-11. Relationships between clinicopathological data and MMP-11 expression in CHCA specimens were analyzed by the ${\chi}^2$ test or Fisher's exact test. The estimated survival and the survival differences were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test, respectively. Results: MMP-11 expression was found in 15 specimens (50%). The overall mean survival time is 237.0 days (95% CI 135.4-338.5, SD 271.9). Specimens with a positive MMP-11 had an average survival time of 136.7 days (95%CI 50.3-223.1, SD 156.0). Survival differences was signficant for the positive and negative MMP-11(p=0.022), but not well differentiated tumor and moderate to poor differentiated tumor (p=0.755), CA19-9 level of >1,000 and <1,000 (p=0.488), and between advanced and non-advanced staging (p=0.388). Conclusions: The positive MMP-11 expression indicates poor prognosis in CHCA specimens.
Eggs used in this study were obtained from Saudi Arabian Baladi laying hens which were divided into four experimental groups and subjected to the following treatments: Commercial laying ration (17% CP, 3.6% Ca and 0.343%, available P) fed ad libitum as a control (C); Conventional force molting, feed removal for 10 days followed by 18 days full-feed of cracked corn (F); 15 days ad libitum intake of the control ration supplemented, to initiate forced-molt, with 0.35% aluminum as the sulfate (ALS) or the chloride (ALC). The hens were in production for 52 weeks and 17 months of age at the start of the trial and the post-treatment period lasted 36 weeks. During the treatment period F and AL treated groups had similar egg and shell weight, egg surface area, shell thickness and shell weight per unit of surface area but significantly (p<0.05) lower than the control. F had significantly (p<0.05) the highest and the control the lowest Haugh unit values whereas AL fed groups had significantly (p<0.05) lower meat spot incidence compared with the control which tended to have higher value than F group. ALC and F had significantly (p<0.05) the lowest yolk color grade whereas ALC had significantly (p<0.05) lower egg index than ALS and the control. During the post-treatment period the control had significantly (p<0.05) the highest egg index and blood spots incidence and ALS the lowest shell diensity compared with other groups. ALS had significantly (p<0.05) lower shell weight than ALC and the control whereas F and AL treated hens had significantly (p<0.05) the highest Haugh unit values and yolk color grades respectively. F had significantly (p<0.05) lower meat spots incidence than ALC and the control. The same results were observed for ALS compared with the control.
