  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of zeolite on the reduction of soil EC level in the plastic film house. The EC level of experimental soil was 5.0 dS $m^{-1}$ and the zeolite was applied to the soil at seven levels (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20%) with three replications. The reduction degree of soil EC level showed positive tendency to the mixing ratio of zeolite. Especially, the EC level reduced rapidly from 5.01 to 2.8 dS $m^{-1}$ in the plot where zeolite was mixed by 20% 10 days after treatment. The pH level of soil was in positive relation to the mixing ratio of zeolite, contrary to the negative relation to the concentration level of water soluble Ca, Mg and phosphorus (P). The water contents of soil mixed with 15% and 20% zeolite were 14% and 17.3% respectively but it was 12.7% for control soil. Therefore, we expect natural zeolite to salts reduction agent for exchangeable cation and phosphate which is difficult to reduce by watering and other methods.

  • This study examined the effect of head formation on the quality maintenance of minimally processed lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) samples. The fresh-cut lettuce samples were packed in $20{\times}15{\times}5$ cm polypropylene+polyethylene terephthalate tray, and were then stored at $4^{circ}C$ for up to 8 days. According to the results, the sample with 100% head formation had lower sugar, minerals (Ca, Na, Fe, Mg, K), and chlorophyll contents compared to the sample with 70% head formation. The 70% head formed lettuce had higher vitamin C content at 3.30 mg/100 g, whereas the 85% and 100% formed samples had lower levels of 2.61 and 2.10 mg/100 g, respectively. The polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity of the 70% formed lettuce was 240 unit/g, while the 100% formed sample had almost 2-fold higher activity. However, the 100% formed lettuce had greater firmness than all other samples. Overall, among the fresh-cut lettuces, the sample with 70% head formation showed more positive effects in terms of quality maintenance.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the possibility of using Agarum cribrosum as a natural health food source. To accomplish this purpose, the contents of the general and antioxidant activities of Agarum cribrosum were measured. The contents of carbohydrate, crude protein, crude lipid and ash were 45.4%, 15.0%, 2.3% and 33.1%. The calories of Agarum cribrosum were 262.3 kcal and total dietary fiber of Agarum cribrosum was 34.0%. The protein contained a total of 18 different kinds of amino acids. The content of amino acids was 12,402.42 mg/100 g. The K was the largest mineral followed by Ca, Na and Mg, implying that Agarum cribrosum is an alkali material. The antioxidant activity of Agarum cribrosum was assessed by various radical scavenging assays using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (ferric ion reducing antioxidant power), reducing power, and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)). All antioxidant activity of Agarum cribrosum extract increased the concentration of the dependents. Total phenolic contents of Agarum cribrosum extract were $34.1{\pm}2.56mg/g$, and total flavonoids contents were estimated at $4.9{\pm}0.26mg/g$. General nutrients and other antioxidant bioactive materials in Agarum cribrosum were also potential materials for good health food. It is expected that a follow-up study of Agarum cribrosum through developing processed food and evaluation of their functional properties would provide useful information or sources of functional foods.

  • Background: Pancreatic cancer has a high mortality rate because it is usually diagnosed late. Since little is known about this cancer in Iran, with the aim of improving this knowledge deficiency, we evaluated clinical, laboratory biomarkers, imaging findings and treatment modalities in Iranian patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Materials and Methods: 131 cases of pancreatic adenocarcinoma in 2010-2013 were obtained from the Taleghani Hospital Record Department. Cases confirmed by histopathology from CT-guided biopsy, EUS-FNA and surgery examination were included. We excluded those with incomplete medical records. Results: The study included 131 subjects between 24 and 97 years of age and a mean age of $63{\pm}13.4$ years. Eighty (61.1%) were male and 51 (38.9%) female. Previous history included diabetes mellitus in 36 (27.5%), alcohol drinking in 5 (3.9%), smoker in 28 (21.4%) and opium addiction in 13 (10%). The common presenting history included weight loss in 79 (60.3%), abdominal pain in 77 (58.8%), fever in 11 (8.4%), nausea in 30 (22.9%), jaundice in 72 (55%), pruritus in 52 (39.7) and anemia in 33 (25.2%). CA19-9 levels with cut offs of 50, 100 and 200 U/ml were increased in 81%, 72% and 66% of patients, respectively. Tumor staging was: stage I, 3 (2.3%); stage II, 10 (7.6%); stage III, 58 (44.3%); and stage IV, 60 (45.8%). From 45 patients, 17 received ERCP inserted metallic stents and 22 plastic stents, the remaining 6 failed that PTC was done. Whipple surgery and chemotherapy were conducted for 10 and 29 patients, respectively. Conclusions: This disease affected older people and there was a male preponderance. The commonest risk factors were diabetes mellitus, smoking and cholelithiasis. The majority of patients presented with loss of appetite, loss of weight, jaundice, abdominal pain and discomfort. Almost all presented at late stages of the disease so that curative surgery was impossible. Also chemotherapy was only performed in a few patients as a neoadjuant treatment.

  • We aimed to develop commercialization process of encapsulation which is superior in productivity compared to existing methods by using sodium alginate. Also, in the same process, sodium alginate with chitosan was used to encapsulate lactic acid bacteria with the same process and then the viable cell counts of the two encapsulated lactic acid bacteria were compared. As a test result of the fluidized drying process developed by the present researchers, it was found that the drying time was shortened by 15 to 20 hours compared to the freeze drying method, but the number of viable lactic acid bacteria was about 75% as compared with freeze drying. However, considering the cost and time of drying, it can be confirmed that the commercialization process is possible by the fluidized bed drying method. When the number of viable cells of Ca-alginate capsule and Chitosan-alginate capsule were compared, it was confirmed that there were about $1{\times}10^9$ or more bacteria in the former and about $1{\times}10^3$ in the latter. The lactic acid bacterium capsules prepared by the present technique were stable for 96 hours or more at pH 4.65 and 6.01, but disappeared within 1 hour at pH 7.07 and 8.35. This suggests that the disintegration of lactic acid bacteria can be easily occurred in small and large intestine.

  • Ar-Ar, carbon AMS and OSL dating was carried out to clarify the age of the human footmarks on the Hamori Formation, Jeju Island, Korea. $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ ages of trachybasalt from the Songaksan Tuff, which is underlain by the Hamori Formation, range between $10.6{\pm}19.9\;Ka$ and $11.7{\pm}26.3\;Ka$. Radiocarbon AMS ages of humin fractions extracted from sediment samples yielded the maximum limit age of the Hamori Formation as $15,161{\pm}70\;yr$ B.P. The OSL dating of the top and bottom layers of the Hamori Formation gave $6.8{\pm}0.3\;ka$ and $7.6{\pm}0.5\;ka$, respectively, suggesting that timing of the human footmarks formation can be constrained as between ca 6,800 yr B.P. and 7,600 yr B.P.

  • The lgtB genes that encode $\beta$-1,4-galactosyltransferases from Neisseria meningitidis ATCC 13102 and gonorrhoeae ATCC 31151 were isolated by a polymerase chain reaction using the pfu DNA polymerase. They were expressed under the control of lac and T7 promoters in Escherichia coli M15 and BL21 (DE3). Although the genes were efficiently expressed in E. coli M15 at $37^{\circ}C$ (33 kDa), most of the $\beta$-1,4-galactosyltransferases that were produced were insoluble and proteolysed into enzymatically inactive polypeptides that lacked C-terminal residues (29.5 kDa and 28 kDa) during the purification steps. When the temperature of the cell growth was lowered to $25^{\circ}C$, however, the solubility of the $\beta$-1,4-galactosyltransferases increased substantially. A stable N-terminal his-tagged recombinant enzyme preparation could be achieved with E. coli BL21 (DE3) that expressed lgtB. Therefore, the cloned $\beta$-1,4-galactosyltransferases were expressed under the control of the T7 promoter in E. coli BL21 (DE3), mostly to the soluble form at $25^{\circ}C$. The proteins were easily purified to homogeneity by column chromatography using Ni-NTA resin, and were found to be active. The galactosyltransferases exhibited pH optimum at 6.5-7.0, and had an essential requirement for the $Mn^{+2}$ ions for its action. The $Mg^{+2}$ and $Ca{+2}$ ions showed about half of the galactosyltransferase activities with the $Mn^{+2}$ ion. In the presence of the $Fe^{+2}$ ion, partial activation was observed with the $\beta$-1,4-galactosyltransferase from N. meningitidis(64% of the enzyme activity with the $Mn^{+2}$$Ni^{+2}$, $Zn^{+2}$, and $Cu^{+2}$ ions could not activate the $\beta$-1,4-galactosyltransferase activity. The inhibited enzyme activity with the $Ni^{+2}$ ion was partially recovered with the $Mn^{+2}$$Fe^{+2}$, $Zn^{+2}$, and $Cu^{+2}$ ions, the $Mn^{+2}$$\beta$-1,4-galactosyltransferase activity was 1.5-fold stimulated with the non-ionic detergent Triton X-100 (0.1-5%).

  • Fly ash application with a rate 0, 50, 100, $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in clay loam paddy, which had properties of pH 5.3 and low contents of silicate, gave a positively residual effects on the growth of rice crop subsequent to malting barley. The responses of rice yields to fly ash application were in the order of bituminous coal fly ash(BCFA) 100 > 150 > 50 > anthracite fly ash(AFA) 50 > 100 > none > AFA $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$. As a result, yields responses of milled rice were ranged from $6.2(50Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}14.4%(100Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by BCFA and from $-0.6(150Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}6.6%(50Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by AFA showing maximum yields of 5.084 and $4.738Mg\;ha^{-1}$ by the former and the latter, respectively. Rice plant showed lodging indices ranging from $20(50Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}40%(150Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by BCFA and from $1.3(150Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}15%(50Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by AFA at harvesting stage. In especial, soils applicated with BCFA contained a good fertility in terms of pH, available $P_2O_5$ and $SiO_2$, and exchangeable Ca and Mg etc. so that possibly harbored 3yr-residual effects of the fly ash on crop subsequent to this rice.

  • An exceptional case of inhabitation of a Sphagnum sp. was firstly confirmed at abandoned paddy terrace (APT) wetland in Ansan. Water sampling for analyzing of physicochemical conditions including nutrients such as NP, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ was performed and the vegetation map for distribution of Sphagnum sp., topographical map, and flora list for companion species were made at field in June 2011. From the results, the Sphagnum sp. in the study site was identified as S. palustre and it covered about 8% of the wetland cover of 3,200 $m^2$. Most distributions of S. palustre were observed at tussock structures as micro-topography by sedges and grasses within a wetland (74%) and the shaded slope area under Pinus densiflora's canopy in wetland boundary (26%). Despite that APT in Ansan is relatively lower wetland in altitude than high moors, the contents of calcium ($0.45{\pm}0.2$) and magnesium ($1.48{\pm}0.6$) ion which are critical limiting factors for Sphagnum spp. were very low levels as well as NP ($PO_4$-P, $0.02{\pm}0.0$; $NO_3$-N, $0.25{\pm}0.3$; $NH_4$-N, $0.06{\pm}0.1$) and it could enable the inhabitation of S. palustre in lower APT.
