  • The effects of carbide and matrix structures on the abrasion wear resistance of multi-component white cast irons with 3.0 mass%C have been studied in this paper. Four different heats were poured in order to obtain the specimens with different combinations of the carbide structures: a basic iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%Cr-5.0 mass%V-5.0 mass% Mo-12.5mass%W)for M$_{6}$C and M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ carbides, and a Cr free iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%V-2.5mass%Mo-12.5 mass%W) for MC and M6C carbides. A conventional high Cr free free iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%V-2.5 mass%Mo-12.5 mass%W) for MC and M6C carbides. A conventional high Cr white cast iron was also poured to compare its wear resistance with those of the multi-component white cast irons. In the as-cast condition, the range of abrasive wear rate(Rw=mg/min) was from 4.15 to 5.98 . The lowest Rw, which means the highest wear resistance, was obtained in the basic iron with nodular MC, lamellar M$_{2}$C and cellular M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ carbides. On the other hand, the Rw of the high Cr white cast iron ranked between the basic iron and the Mo and W free iron. In each alloy, the Rw of air hardened or tempered specimen was lower than that of the as-cast one because of the change of matrix structures by the heat treatments. The Rw of the hear treated speci-mens increased in the order Mo and W free iron, basic iron, Cr free iron, high Cr iron, and V free iron.n.n.n.

  • The characterestics of high Si-high Mo ductile cast iron, high Si-high Mo C.V. cast iron and Ni-resist cast iron were compared and evaluated. The nodule count of the last one was lower and the nodularity was higher than those for the first one, respectively. The first two had ferritic matrices with small amounts of molybdenum carbides. The first one had the highest tensile strength and the last one the lowest elongation. This had the highest high temperature strength and that of the second one was greatly increased from the room temperature strength. The volumes of the first two were decreased during cooling and that of the last one changed little. The thermal expansion coefficient of the last one was the highest and the first one the lowest. During high temperature oxidation, even though the volume of the first one was increased, the weight was decreased and the volume and weight of the second one were increased. The change of the increased weight of the last one was more than that of thickness.

  • Three different multi-component white cast irons alloyed with Cr, V, Mo and W were prepared in order to study their as-cast and solidification structures. Three combinations of the alloying elements were selected so as to obtain the different types of carbides and matrix structures : 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No.1), 3%C-10%V-5% Mo-5%W(alloy No. 2) and 3%C-17%Cr-3% V(alloy No.3). The as-cast microstructures were investigated with optical and scanning electron microscopes. There existed two different types of carbides, $M_7C_3$ carbide with rod-like morphology and $M_6C$ carbide with fishbone-like one, and matrix in the alloy No. 1. The alloy No. 2 consisted of MC carbide with chunky and flaky type and needle-like $M_2C$ carbide, and matrix. The chunky type referred to primary MC carbide and the flaky one to eutectic MC carbide. The morphology of the alloy No. 3 represented a typical hypo-eutectic high chromium white cast iron composed of rod-like $M_7C_3$ carbide which is very sensitive to heat flow direction and matrix. To clarify the solidification sequence, each iron(50g) was remelted at 1723K in an alumina crucible using a silicon carbide resistance furnace under argon atmosphere. The molten iron was cooled at the rate of 10K/min and quenched into water at several temperatures during thermal analysis. The solidification structures of the specimen were found to consist of austenite dendrite(${\gamma}$), $ ({\gamma}+ M_7C_3)$ eutectic and $({\gamma}+ M_6C)$ eutectic in the alloy No. 1, proeutectic MC, austenite dendrite(${\gamma}$), (${\gamma}$+MC) eutectic and $({\gamma}+ M_2C)$ eutectic in the alloy No. 2, and proeutectic $M_7C_3$ and $ ({\gamma}+ M_7C_3)$ eutectic in the alloy No 3. respectively.

  • In order to study the infuence of Sb addition on the compacted vermicular graphite cast iron(C/V) and gray cast iron(GC), these specimen which had different Sb content(0-0, 1wt.%) were prepared. these specimen were tested for microstructure and mechanical properties. The result from this study are as follows. For C/V and GC, the microstructure of graphite appeared to be finer with increasing Sb content more than 0.06wt.% Ferrite disappeared from the matrix with addition of Sb more than 0.06wt.% in GC and more than 0.08wt.% in C/V. The size of the eutectic cell in GC was 4.5 to 7 times larger than that in C/V, but the decreasing tendancy of its size was more remarkable in GC than in C/V with increasing Sb content. The abrasion speed corresponding to the maximum amount of abrasion in the nabrasion test was found to be 1.37m/sec. GC sample weared 3.6 to 21 times faster than those of C/V did. the amount of abrasion demeased remarkably with Sb addition, and the abrasion rate was constant with Sb content over 0.04wt.%

  • The effects of copper as an alloying element on the microstructure of Compacted Vermicular graphite cast iron which was treated with Mg-REM spheroidizer have been studied. With the increase of copper content up to 2.0wt.%, the following results were obtained; First, the ratio of residual magnesium content in the as-cast iron has been found to be increased, possibly due to the decrease of sulfur content in the melt. Thus, the morphology of graphite in the as-cast iron has been found to be more nodular type. Second, the proportion of pearlite in the matrix has been found to he increased, however the matrix being with free carbide precipitates in the copper range of 1.2wt.% to 2.0wt.%. Third, the tensile strength of the as-cast iron in the temperature up to $400^{\circ}C$ was increased.

  • The effects of addition of magnesium only and the simultaneous addition of magnesium and aluminum on the graphite morphology of the cast iron with the composition of 3.6wt.% and 2.5wt.%Si poured into shell stack mold were investigated. The nodularity and mechanical properties of the specimen with smaller cross-section were higher than those with langer one, when copper was not added. When the magnesium only was added, the nodularity was decreased with decreased residual magnesium content and the C. V, graphite was obtained with the magnesium content in the range of 0.010~0.015wt.%. When the magnesium and aluminum were added together, the nodularity was decreased with decreased residual magnesium and increased aluminum contents. When copper was added, the volume fraction of pearlite in the matrix, strength and hardness were higher and elongation was lower for specimen with smaller cross-section. The volume fraction of pearlite, strength and hardness were increased and the elongation was decreased with increased copper content for the specimen with C, V, graphite.

  • C/V graphite iron has superior tensile strength, toughness and ductility than grey iron, and better castability than ductile iron. The retained austenite content of C/V graphite iron by austempering treatment affects on the mechanical properties such as ductility, hardness, wear properties and machinability. C/V graphite iron alloyed with Cu and Mo were carried out on the austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, and the austempering at $240{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. And then the mechanical and wear properties of austempered C/V graphite iron have been investigated by the retained austenite content. In consequence, the retained austenite content was found to be 18.2% in austempering temperature at $240^{\circ}C$, and was increased 39.2% at $400^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength and hardness of austempered C/V graphite iron were decreased as the retained austenite content increased, but elongation was increased. The rolling wear loss were increased as the retained austenite content increased. The wear surface of as-cast became to be rough. The microstructure of austempered C/V graphite iron was became to be acicular ausferrite in austempering at $240^{\circ}C$, and feathery ausferrite at $400^{\circ}C$.
