  • Differences in competitive characteristics for mineral nutrition were compared with rice and weeds according to rice planting types like the traditional hand transplanting, machine transplanting of young(10days old) and mature(30days old) seedling, flood direct seeding of germinated seeds and dry direct seeding of dry seeds. There was a slight competition for such nutrients as N, P, K, Ca, and Mg by E. crus-galli and E. kuroguwai in transplanting cultivations. However, nutrient uptake by rice in direct-seedings was severely inhibited throughout the whole growth period by the two weeds including annual weeds such as S. Juncoides and C. difformis. The competition for nutrients at different cultivation types was mainly governed by the dominant weeds.

  • The herbicidal activity of thiocarbamate herbicides and its effect on cell division and elongation were determined. The herbicides studied were molinate(S-ethyl-N,N-hexamethylenethiocarbamate), dimepiperate [S-(${\alpha}$,${\alpha}$-di methylbenzyle)piperidine-1-carbothioate], esprocarb [S-benzyl-N-ethyl-N-(1,2-dimethylpropyl) thiocarbamate], and thiobencarb [S-(4-chlorobenzyl)-N, N-diethylthiocarbamate]. The herbicides applied at the rates ranged from $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-5}M$ did not affect germination and post-germination root growth of rice(Oryza sativa L.) and barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli(L.) P. Beauv.], but inhibited the post-germination shoot growth. There was no inhibition of gibberellin-induced ${\alpha}$-amylase biosynthesis in de-embryonated rice seeds by the herbicides at $10^{-5}M$, but about 50-60% inhibition occurred at $10^{-4}M$. When the herbicides were applied 7 days after seeding, the rates required to 50% growth inhibition of barnyardgrass were 146g, 91g, 96g, and 102g ai/10a for molinate, dimepiperate, esprocarb, and thiobencarb, respectively. No effect of the herbicides on cell division was found at $10^{-4}M$, but about 31 to 47% inhibition as compared with the untreated check was obtained by treatment of the herbicides at $10^{-3}M$. However, about 33 to 38% inhibition of cell elongation occurred at $10^{-5}M$ of the herbicides. They also inhibited IAA-induced cell elongation.

  • This study was conducted to know the effect of storage period, harvesting time and light condition on dormancy breaking of major weeds. Echinochloa crus-galli, Cyperus serotinus, Aeschynomene indica, Ludwigia prostrata and Bidens tripartita had the 10 or 30% germination ability within 30 days after harvest but scirpus juncoides, Potamogeton distinctus, Aneilema japonica and Monochoria vaginalis had not germination untill 120 days after harvest of seed. C. serotinus and P. hydropiper required strong light for germination but S. juncoides, L. prostrata and B. tripartita showed the less tham 5% germination in the dark condition gerntinator. S. juncoides germination showed negative response in chemical soaking but A. japonica, B. tripartita and L. prostrata showed high germination percentage in Acetone, Chloroform and distilled water soaking during the 10 days after treatment.

  • The experiment was carried out to find the feasibility of using Oxyfluorfen in the paddy fields by investigating the difference of selective activity of Oxyfluorfen among rice cultivars and major paddy weed species. The dosage of Oxyfluorfen that show selective activity between rice cultivars and weed species ranged from 0.1 to 0.4kg ai/ha. The degree of growth inhibition was in order of whole-plant soaking application > root soaking application > stem bandage application, and in that case $10^{-5}$M Oxyfluorfen was treated after emergence. Especially the growth inhibition of rice cultivars and Cyperus serotinus was low, among others. Photosynthesis was severely inhibited at the Oxyfluorfen level above $10^{-4}$ M in all the tested weeds, but inhibition of respiration was not to be seen. Isolated single cells of two rice cultivars and Cyperus serotinus were tolerant to $10^{-5}$M Oxyfluorfen, but those of Echinochloa crus-galli and Sagittaria pygmaea were susceptible comparatively. The growth inhibition of suspension cultured rice cell induced by the increments of Oxyfluorfen concentration, and the degree of inhibition was higher in C.V. Mushakdanti than in C.V. Aichiasahi.

  • Growth and anatomical responses of rice and barnyardgrass(Echinochloa crus-galli) to oxyfluorfen were examined under various growing conditions in a greenhouse. With foliar application at 0.08kg ai/ha 7 days after seeding or transplanting, oxyfluorfen completely reduced the shoot and root growth of barnyardgrass under all growing conditions. However, oxyfluorfen reduced the growth of direct seeded and transplanted rice by 0~64% and 0~12%, respectively. Phytotoxic effect on rice growth, with respect to plant height and shoot fresh weight, was more pronounced under water(53~63%) than under dry-condition(16~33%), and in broadcast-seeded(34~62%) than in drill-seeded rice(16~33%). Anatomical changes of epidermal and vascular bundle sheath cells of rice leaves were not induced by oxyfluorfen, but mesophyll cells were partially ruptured and total leaf thickness was reduced. Oxyfluorfen, however, constricted and ruptured mesophyll and vascular bundle sheath cells and severely reduced leaf thickness of barnyardgrass under all growing conditions examined. These anatomical changes were more severe under dry- than under water-seeded condition.

  • The climate change affects the growth and development of weeds as well as the outbreak of weeds. Especially, the occurrences of problematic paddy weeds due to climate change might cause the difficulties in weed control. This study therefore, investigated the current dominance and distribution of paddy weeds. As a result of the study on paddy weeds in northern Gyeonggi-do, there were total of 65 taxonomy groups including 23 family, 41 genus, 57 species, 7 subspecies and 1 variety. Among all the plants, 46 species were annual plants and 16 were perennial plants. Echinochloa crus-galli was the highest in importance analysis and the followings were in order of Ludwigia prostrate and Lemna paucicostata. The similarity of different paddy weeds in different regions observed through TWINSPAN analysis was distinguished by Fimbristylis miliacea, Rotala indica and Cyperus flaccidus. Regional differences shown in CCA analysis using weed species and soil environment revealed that Gimpo-si and Namyangju-si has difference soil and weeds, which are features that distinguished them from other regions. In northern Gyeonggi-do the result of paddy weed research showed the interregional difference not in dominant weeds but in distribution species.

  • Cyhalofop/bentazon ME and pyribenzoxim EC herbicides were originally developed as foliarapplied herbicides to control weeds at 4-5 leaf stages of barnyard grass 20-25 days after seeding (DAS) in direct-seeding culture but further possible utilization of these two herbicides earlier than 3-4 leaf stages of rice were evaluated for a field where early weed infestations might be severe. The application of cyhalofop/bentazon ME and pyribenzoxim EC at right after rice emergence and the 2-3 leaf stages of rice had an excellent weed control efficacy with above 90% up to 30 DAS without a phytotoxicity of rice plant and the control efficacy of over 80% was maintained until 60 DAS. However, these two herbicides controlled Echinochloa crus-galli very effectively above 97% but Aneilema keisak and Aeschynomene indica were not controlled by cyhalofop/bentazon ME and Cyperus serotinus by pyribenzoxim EC. Therefore, to control those problem weeds, second systematic application of pyribenzoxim EC and pyrazosulfuron/mefenacet G for A. keisak and A. indica, and pyrazosulfuron/molinate G, cyhalofap/ azimsulfuron/molinate G, pyrazosulfuron/mefenacet G and bentazon SL for C. serotinus at 30 DAS was found to be very efficient herbicide systems.

  • Effect of azimsulfuron {1-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)-3-[1-methyl-4-(2-methyl-2H-tetrazol-5-yl) pyrazol-5-ylsulfonl]urea} combined with eight annual herbicides on shoot and root growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.] was investigated. Annual herbicides used were four thiocarbamates (dimepiperate, molinate, esprocarb, and thiobencarb), two acetanilides (butachlor and pretilachlor), one urea (dymron), and one oxadiazole (oxadiazon) herbicide. Growth inhibition in rice shoot was greater with azimsulfuron mixed with the annual herbicides than with azimsulfuron only. The azimsulfuron mixtures did not bring about decrease in growth inhibition of rice shoot. However, safening effect in root growth of rice was obtained when dimepiperate, molinate and dymron were combined with greater than 10ppm of azimsulfuron. Greater inhibition in shoot and root growth of rice occurred with straight chain hydrocarbon substitute such as esprocarb and thiobencarb than with cyclohydrocarbon substitute such as dimepiperate and molinate. Application of the azimsulfuron mixtures resulted in increase. in growth inhibition of shoot and root growth of barnyardgrass as compared with when azimsulfuron only was applied.

  • The objectives of the present study were to find out 1)the differences in growth of radish under foggy and non-foggy condition, 2)the weed competition between radish and major upland weeds including Echinochloa crus-galli, 3)difference in response of radish to herbicide and weed, and finally 4)the fundamental data for the establishment of radish weed control system under locational foggy regions. The research was carried out by tray in greenhouse equipped with Auto Foggy System(SAE KI RIN Co.) and results were summarized as follows. 1. Plant height and shoot fresh weight of radish cultivars(long skirt, delicious altari, green mascot) were not different at the early growth(8 to 38 days after seeding), but increased at 55 days after seeding under foggy condition. Root fresh weight increased only in green mascot cultivar tinder foggy condition. Chlorophyll contents were higher in all the cultivars of radish under foggy condition. 2. Plant height and shoot fresh weight increased at 0 and 20 days of weed competition under foggy condition. Root fresh weight increased at 0, 20 and 35 days of competition under foggy condition. Above 50 days-competition, there was no difference between foggy and non-foggy condition. 3. Napropamide, alachlor and linuron did not show any differences in plant height and shoot fresh weight between foggy and non-foggy condition. Molinate reduced the root fresh weight at 65 days after seeding tinder foggy condition. 4. No difference in weeding efficacy by any herbicides tested was found tinder foggy condition. Weeding efficacy of Aeschynomene indica was reduced under foggy condition.

  • The effect of kaempferol (3,5,7,4-tetrahydroxyflavone), a flavonoid compound that was identified in barnyard millet (Echinochloa crus-galli var. frumentacea) grains, on G2-checkpoint and apoptotic pathways was investigated in human acute leukemia Jurkat T cell clones stably transfected with an empty vector (J/Neo) or a Bcl-xL expression vector (J/Bcl-xL). Exposure of J/Neo cells to kaempeferol caused cytotoxicity and activation of the ATM/ATR-Chk1/Chk2 pathway, activating the phosphorylation of p53 (Ser-15), inhibitory phosphorylation of Cdc25C (Ser-216), and inactivation of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (Cdk1), with resultant G2-arrest of the cell cycle. Under these conditions, apoptotic events, including upregulation of Bak and PUMA levels, Bak activation, mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) loss, activation of caspase-9, -8, and -3, anti-poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage, and accumulation of apoptotic sub-G1 cells, were induced without accompanying necrosis. However, these apoptotic events, except for upregulation of Bak and PUMA levels, were completely abrogated in J/Bcl-xL cells overexpressing Bcl-xL, suggesting that the G2-arrest and the Bcl-xL-sensitive mitochondrial apoptotic events were induced, in parallel, as downstream events of the DNA-damage-mediated G2-checkpoint activation. Together these results demonstrate that kaempferol-mediated antitumor activity toward Jurkat T cells was attributable to G2-checkpoint activation, which caused not only G2-arrest of the cell cycle but also activating phosphorylation of p53 (Ser-15) and subsequent induction of mitochondria-dependent apoptotic events, including Bak and PUMA upregulation, Bak activation, Δψm loss, and caspase cascade activation.
