  • The GPS modernization program offered a new civil signal on the L2 band, and the first modernized GPS Block IIR satellite was launched in September 2005. Currently, eight GPS Block IIRM satellites and two Block IIF satellites transmit L2C signal. The L2C signal contains two codes of CM and CL that are much longer than the L1 C/A code. Thus, the acquisition of the CM and CL codes takes more time compared with that of L1 C/A code. Under the assumption that the L2C signal is strong enough for detection, this paper suggests rapid acquisition methods for the GPS L2C signals for software receivers and compares its performance with that of other methods.

  • It is well known that for a sequence a = ($a_0,\;a_1$,...) the general term of the dual sequence of a is $a_n\;=\;c_0\;^n_0\;+\;c_1\;^n_1\;+\;...\;+\;c_n\;^n_n$, where c = ($c_0,...c_n$ is the dual sequence of a. In this paper, we find the general term of the sequence ($c_0,\;c_1$,... ) and give another method for finding the inverse matrix of the Pascal matrix. And we find a simple proof of the fact that if the general term of a sequence a = ($a_0,\;a_1$,... ) is a polynomial of degree p in n, then ${\Delta}^{p+1}a\;=\;0$.

  • We developed a Off-Line Graphic Simulator which can simulate a robot model in 3D graphics space in Windows 95 version. 4 axes SCARA robot was adopted as an objective model. Forward kinematics, inverse kinematics and robot dynamics modeling were included in the developed program. The interface between users and the off-line program system in the Windows 95's graphic user interface environment was also studied. The developing language is Microsoft Visual C++. Graphic libraries, OpenGL, by Silicon Graphics, Inc. were utilized for 3D graphics.

  • We studied the effects of temperature on the egg development and larvae of Takifugu pardalis. The larvae hatched 135-480 hr after fertilization in $13^{\circ}C-24^{\circ}C$ and 32 ppt. The higher the temperature the earlier the larvae hatch within $13^{\circ}C-24^{\circ}C$. The maximum hatching rate was made in $15^{\circ}C$ and 32 ppt. The higher the temperature the larger the newly hatched larvae. The larvae hatched in $24^{\circ}C$ were ca. 3.35 mm in total length. Occurrence of the deformed larvae was lower in $13^{\circ}C-18^{\circ}C$ regime and higher over $21^{\circ}C$ regime.

  • Even though three isotypes of thioredoxins (-f, -m and -h types) have been identified in a variety of plant cells, there are only a few reports on thioredoxin-h that were recently identified. In this study, a cDNA encoding a h-type of thioredoxin was isolated from a cDNA library of Chinese cabbage, and named here CTrx-h. An open reading frame of the gene contained a polypeptide of 133 amino acids with a conserved active center, WCGPC, which appeared in all of the thioredoxin proteins. A deduced amino acid sequence of the CTrx-h showed the highest sequence identity with those of Arabidopsis thioredoxin-h2 (75.2%) and thioredoxin-h5 (46.6%) proteins, but it shared a low sequence homology to other isotypes of plant thioredoxinm and thioredoxin-f. The CTrx-h protein that is expressed in E. coli represented not only an insulin reduction activity, but also electron transferring activity from NADPH to thioredoxin-dependent peroxidase. A genomic Southern blot analysis using the cDNA insert of CTrx-h revealed that the gene consisted of a small multigene family in Chinese cabbage genome. On the contrary to other thioredoxin-h proteins that were widely distributed in most tissues of the plant, the CTrx-h was predominantly expressed in flowers. The expression was very low in other tissues. The data of the Northern blot analysis suggests that the CTrx-h may have other functions in flower development or differentiation, in addition to its defensive role.

  • Most widely used secondary structure assignment methods such as DSSP identify structural elements based on N-H and C=O hydrogen bonding patterns from X-ray or NMR-determined coordinates. Secondary structure assignment algorithms using limited $C{\alpha}$ information have been under development as well, but their accuracy is only ~80% compared to DSSP. We have hereby developed SABA (Secondary Structure Assignment Program Based on only Alpha Carbons) with ~90% accuracy. SABA defines a novel geometrical parameter, termed a pseudo center, which is the midpoint of two continuous $C{\alpha}s$. SABA is capable of identifying $\alpha$-helices, $3_{10}$-helices, and $\beta$-strands with high accuracy by using cut-off criteria on distances and dihedral angles between two or more pseudo centers. In addition to assigning secondary structures to $C{\alpha}$-only structures, algorithms using limited $C{\alpha}$ information with high accuracy have the potential to enhance the speed of calculations for high capacity structure comparison.

  • This paper proposes how to prevent of vulnerability from IP address attack of Oracle DB by C program environments. An attacker may try to login DB by connectng remote IP address. Recently an attacker use foreign IP address and try to connect to DB using known DB account. Therefore, DB data is frequently disclosed. I propose a new idea that develops specific IP address blocking module in C program in the Oracle DB. By this module, we can use the Oracle DB safely.

  • Indigenous (native) breeds of livestock have higher disease resistance and adaptation to the environment due to high genetic diversity. Even though their extinction rate is accelerated due to the increase of commercial breeds, natural disaster, and civil war, there is a lack of well-established databases for the native breeds. Thus, we constructed the native pig and chicken breed database (NPCDB) which integrates available information on the breeds from around the world. It is a nonprofit public database aimed to provide information on the genetic resources of indigenous pig and chicken breeds for their conservation. The NPCDB (http://npcdb.snu.ac.kr/) provides the phenotypic information and population size of each breed as well as its specific habitat. In addition, it provides information on the distribution of genetic resources across the country. The database will contribute to understanding of the breed's characteristics such as disease resistance and adaptation to environmental changes as well as the conservation of indigenous genetic resources.

  • Salinity is a major abiotic stress that limits rice productivity in many regions of the world. In order to develop salt stress tolerant rice plants, genetic engineering is a promising approach. We characterized the molecular function of rice C3H2C3 as a really interesting new gene (RING). Oryza sativa RING finger protein H2-3 (OsRFPH2-3) was highly expressed in 100 mM NaCl. To identify the localization of OsRFPH2-3, we fused vectors that include C-terminal GFP protein (35S;;OsRFPH2-3-GFP). OsRFPH2-3 was expressed in the nucleus in rice protoplasts. An in vitro ubiquitin assay demonstrated that OsRFPH2-3 possessed E3-ubiquitin ligase activity. However, the mutated OsRFPH2-3 were not possessed any E3-ubiquitin ligase activity. Under salinity conditions, OsRFPH2-3-overexpressing plants exhibited higher chlorophyll, proline, SOD, POD, CAT, and soluble sugar contents and lower H2O2 accumulation than wild-type plants, supporting transgenic plants with enhanced salinity tolerance phenotypes. OsRFPH2-3-overexpressing plants exhibited low Na+ accumulation and Na+/K+ ratios in their roots. Theses results suggest that overexpression of OsRFPH2-3 can make plant insensitivity about salinity conditions.
