  • The use of engineering plastic products in internal combustion engine and electric cars to improve stiffness and reduce weight is increasing significantly. Among various lightweight materials, engineering plastics have significant advantages such as cost reduction, improved productivity, and weight reduction. In particular, engineering plastics containing glass fibers are used to enhance stiffness. However, the stiffness of glass fibers can increase or decrease depending on their orientation. Before developing plastic products, optimal designs are determined through injection molding and structural analysis to enhance product reliability. However, reliable analysis of products with variable stiffnesses caused by anisotropy cannot be achieved via the conventional isotropic structural analysis, which does not consider anisotropy. Therefore, based on the previously reported study "the Effect of Impacted Fracture in Glass Fiber Orientation with Injection Molding & Structural Coupled Analysis," this study aims to investigate the structural analysis and degradation mechanisms of various polymers. In particular, this study elucidates the actual mechanism of plastic fracture by analyzing various fracture conditions and their corresponding simulations. Furthermore, the objective of this study is to apply the injection molding and structural coupled analysis mechanism to develop engineering plastic products containing glass fibers. In addition, the study aims to apply and improve the plastic fracture mechanism in actual products by exploring anisotropy and stiffness reduction owing to the unfilled polymer weld line.

  • A spherical $BaMgAl_{10}$ $O_{17}$ :Eu phosphor has been synthesized by a multi-step precipitation route. In order to successfully synthesize the phosphor with spherical shape, the hydrated-alumina particles should be controlled for spherical shape. In this process, the hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) was used as a dispersing reagent. This reagent plays an important role in that the particles were controlled to have the uniform size of sub-micron. The final product prepared by the multi-step precipitation method maintained spherical shape with uniform size of 0.4$\mu\textrm{m}$. It can be seen in X-ray diffraction patterns, formation of the single phase of $BaMgAl_{10}$ $O_{17}$ :Eu phosphor prepared by the multi-step precipitation method at $1350^{\circ}C$. Also, the emission spectra of spherical $BaMgAl_{O}$ $10_{17}$ :Eu phosphor in the present case was compared with those of commercially-available blue phosphor under VUV (Vacuum Ultra Violet) excitation. The luminescence process of the $BaMgAl_{10}$ $O_{17}$ :Eu phosphor is characterized by the $4f^{6}$$5d^1$longrightarrow4f$^{7}$ transition (blue) of the $Eu^{2+}$ ion acting as an activating center and the maximum luminescence intensity was obtained by reduction treatment at 145$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The demand of environmental friendly packaging materials such as pulp mold has been increased. The application of the oil palm biomass, EFB (Empty Fruit Bunch) fiber as natural raw materials to the pulp mold could increase the usability of the pulp mold by the reduced production cost brought from the relatively low cost of EFB. The effects of the EFB(Empty Fruit Bunch) fibers on the properties of pulp mold and on the process efficiency were evaluated in this study. The pulp mold samples were prepared with mixture ONP (Old news paper) and EFB by using laboratory wet pulp molder. The changes in the drying efficiency were measured with the changes in the solid contents of pulp mold samples during drying process. The efficiency of the surface coating treatment on the pulp mold depending on the condition of the pulp mold samples were also evaluated in order to improve the water resistance properties of pulp mold. The addition of EFB increased the drying efficiency by providing the bulkier structure and the higher water contact angle, which indicated the better water resistance properties. The water resistance were improved by the surface coating treatments and the application of surface coating on the pulp mold at the higher moisture contents resulted in the higher improvement in the water resistance. The bulkier structure originated from the application of EFB fiber reduced the effects of the surface coating, which could be overcome by the control of surface coating process.

  • Effects of signal sequences, protein sizes and dissolved oxygen on the secretion of human lysozyme from a recombinant yeast were experimentally characterized. The systems consisted of Saccharomyces cerevisiae host SEY2102 that was transformed with two different plasmids. These plasmids were identical with an exception to the plasmid pMC614, which contained the native yeast MFα1 sequence and the plasmid pMC632 with the non-native rat α-amylase signal sequence. The expression of human lysozyme was controlled by the ADHI promoter. The native yeast MFαl signal sequence was more efficient than the non-native rat α-amylase signal sequence in directing the secretion of human lysozyme. Lysozyme secreted with the α-amylase signal was retained inside the cells and released to the medium very slowly, thereby causing a lower cell growth rate and a decreased product secretion rate. Lysozyme was secreted more efficiently than invertase, which is an order of magnitude bigger in molecular size compared to lysozyme, which was under the direction of the MFαl signal sequence, suggesting that protein sizes may affect the secretion efficiency. When expressed in anaerobic conditions in the medium where the ADHI promoter was derepressed, the amount of lysozyme secreted was about twice higher than that of the aerobic culture. However, the secretion rates were identical. This result showed that the dissolved oxygen level may affect the efficiency of protein secretion only, and not the secretion rate of the product protein.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of solution treatment on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of cast AZ91-4%RE magnesium alloy. In the as-cast state, microstructure of the AZ91-4%RE alloy was characterized by intermetallic ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$, $Al_{11}RE_3$ and $Al_2RE$ phase particles distributed in ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ matrix. After solution treatment, the ${\beta}$ particles with low melting point dissolved into the matrix, but Al-RE phases still remained due to their high thermal stabilities. It was found from the immersion and potentiodynamic polarization tests that corrosion rate of the AZ91-4%RE alloy increased after the solution treatment. On the contrary, EIS tests and EDS compositional analyses on the surface corrosion products indicated that the stability of the corrosion product was improved after the solution treatment. Examinations on the corroded microstructures for the ascast and solution-treated samples revealed that dissolution of the ${\beta}$ particles which play a beneficial role in suppressing corrosion propagation, would be responsible for the deterioration of corrosion resistance after the solution treatment. This result implies that the microstructural features such as amount, size and distribution of secondary phases that determine corrosion mechanism, are more influential on the corrosion rate in comparison with the stability of surface corrosion product.

  • Joining of Mg/Ti hybrid structures by welding for automotive and aerospace applications has attracted great attention in recent years due mainly to its potential benefit of energy saving and emission reduction. However, joining them has been hampered with many difficulties due to their physical and metallurgical incompatibilities. Different joining processes have been employed to join Mg/Ti, and in most cases in order to get a metallurgical bonding between them was the use of an intermediate element at the interface or mutual diffusion of alloying elements from the base materials. The formation of a reaction product (in the form of solid solution or intermetallic compound) along the interface between the Mg and Ti is responsible for formation of a metallurgical bond. However, the interfacial bonding achieved and the joints performance depend significantly on the newly formed reaction product(s). Thus, a thorough understanding of the interaction between the selected intermediate elements with the base metals along with the influence of the associated welding parameters are essential. This review is timely as it presents on the current paradigm and progress in welding and joining of Mg/Ti alloys. The factors governing the welding of several important techniques are deliberated along with their joining mechanisms. Some opportunities to improve the welding of Mg/Ti for different welding techniques are also identified.

  • The bent wood technique has been used for making the bow, the musical instruments and the wagon wheel, The Winsor chair of England in 1730's was the first Lfurniture product by using this method. This method was spread out by Michael Thonet in Austria after the Industrial Evolution. Early making technique of Winsor chair was relatively easy, but Michael Thonet's bent chair was mass produced by the machine and launched the revolution in the industrial furniture. 20th-Century European furniture designers applied the method of layering and forming plywood to bent chairs, enhanced the function and conformability. The bent chair had a big impact on modern chair design. The bent chair has the formative beauty and convenience from the character of softness and colors of wooden materials and has been developed variously by furniture designers. This study is a new approach to use Dyed-Gathered Wood with various colors and patterns as a material of the bend wood. First, bent wood with the Dyed-Gathered Wood enhances a close texture of wooden material textures instead of coating the surface. Second, flexibility of the bent wood with the Dyed-Gathered Wood enables wood bending techniques. Lastly, the Dyed-Gathered Wood is made with relatively cheap woods, replaces expensive imported woods which cause product price rise. This method enables a material cost saving and a stable supply of material.

  • Additive manufacturing (AM), so called 3D Printing is a new manufacturing process and is getting attraction from many industries. There are several methods of 3D printing. Among them fused deposition modeling (FDM) type is most widely used by reason of cheap maintenance, easy operation and variety of polymeric materials. Articles manufactured by 3D printing have weak deposition strength compared with conventionally manufactured products. Deposition strength of FDM type 3D printed article is highly dependent of deposition temperature. Subsequently the nozzle temperature in the FDM type 3D printing is very important and it is controlled by heat source in the 3D printer. Nozzle is connected with heat block and barrel, and heat block contains heat source. Nozzle becomes hot through heat conduction from heat source. Nozzle temperature has been predicted for various thermal boundary conditions by computer simulation and compared with experimental measurement. Nozzle temperature highly depends upon thermal conductivities of heat block and nozzle. Simulation results are good agreement with experiment.

  • A porous coordination solid of nickel(II) dihydroxyterephthalate has been synthesized by the microwave-assisted (MW) method. The synthesized nickel(II) dihyroxylterephthalate was designated by the general formula of [$Ni_2$(dhtp) $(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}8H_2O$ (where, dhtp = 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate, denoted by Ni-DHTP). The effect of microwave-irradiation temperature and time of irradiation on the porosity and morphological changes in the solids have also been investigated. The catalytic performance of Ni-DHTP synthesized by MW method has been studied in the oxidation of cyclohexene with aqueous $H_2O_2$, which gave cyclohexene oxide as the primary product and 2-cyclohexene-1-ol as a major product.
