  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the resource recovery effect and the economic effect of the fishermen by the fisheries vessel buy-back program. First, this study standardizes the fishing efforts of coastal gill net, coastal trap, and coastal composite fisheries using Gavaris general linear model. Second, the resource evaluation is performed by using vessel buy-back program data, and also the CYP model based on exponential growth function is applied. In order to derive the effect of the vessel buy-back program, the MSY with the vessel buy-back program is compared with the MSY without the vessel buy-back program. Finally, we compare and analyze producer surplus under the equilibrium of the MEY and the OA using bioeconomic model. In conclusion, the vessel buy-back program has shown an increase in resource growth and economic improvement for the remaining fishermen. The result shows that the remaining fishermen are able to obtain an increase in producer surplus of about 53% due to the vessel buy-back program under equilibrium levels of the open access and the maximum economic yield.

  • It is important to have an appropriate amount of inventory for effective operations. This study seeks to develop a sustainable newsvendor model by incorporating environment-related costs into the existing well-known (single-period) newsvendor model. Since leftovers do more harm to environments than stockouts, the optimal order amount tends to be lower than the traditional quantity. However, this is not the case when a second buy is allowed. A second order opportunity is prevalent in industries where it improves demand forecast despite incurring extra costs. In this study, we conduct an extensive numerical analysis for a newsvendor situation with a permitted second buy. The results show that we can reduce inventory costs by considering sustainability concerns. The research idea of including sustainability considerations into existing inventory models can be extended to a more general case and provides managerial insights for better inventory decisions.

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the factors for the general consumers to choose the store to buy seafood. Survey on 414 general consumers by questionnaires was conducted to find out the factors for them to choose the stores in the traditional market and large supermarket, and through the analysis on the results the factors for general consumers to choose large supermarkets were derived when they buy seafood and at the same time the degree of its importance was analyzed. The results of the survey showed that the general consumers chose large supermarkets to buy seafood despite the fact that they recognized the seafood prices are lower in the traditional markets than in the large supermarkets. Particularly, the results of analyzing the sixteen criteria for choosing the store in which to buy seafood were grouped into four: the 'assortment of goods and high quality', 'service', 'price and promotion' and 'convenient accessibility.' The results of examining the order of priority based on the four factors showed that the 'assortment of diverse seafood and high quality' was found to be given the first priority, followed by 'convenient accessibility' and 'prices and promotion factors', with 'service' being statistically insignificant. Based on these results, Monroe (1975)'s consumers' store choice process is summarized as follows. Before buying seafood, the consumers who use large supermarkets have the desire for buying seafood and then judge the properties of the store which they will use. In this process, consumers were satisfying their needs in large supermarkets in the criteria of 'assortment of diverse seafood and high quality', convenient accessibility', and 'prices and promotion factors' which were found to be statistically significant in this research. Accordingly, the general consumers choose to buy seafood in large supermarkets rather than in the traditional markets. The general consumers were more satisfied with using large supermarkets than using traditional markets, so after they have initially bought seafood in the large supermarkets, they habitually buy seafood in the large supermarkets without going through Monroe (1975)'s 'eight stage process for the store choice.' When such habitual store choice behavior continues for a long time, it results in becoming structural.

  • Previous studies on information systems (IS) and finance suggest that information on stock message boards influence the investment decisions of individual investors. However, how information on online stock message boards influences an individual investor's buy or sell decisions is unclear. To address this research question, we investigate the relationship between a number of posts on stock message boards and order imbalance in stock markets. Order imbalance is defined as the difference between the daily sum of buy-side shares traded and the daily sum of sell-side shares traded. Therefore, order imbalance can suggest the direction of trades and the strength of the direction with trading volumes. In this regard, this study examines how the number of posts (information on stock message boards) influences order imbalance (stock trading behavior). We collected about 46,077 messages of 40 companies on the Korea Composite Stock Price Index from Paxnet, the most popular Korean online stock message board. The messages we collected were divided based on in-trading and after-trading hours to examine the relationship between the numbers of posts and trading volumes. We also collected order imbalance data on individual investors. We then integrated the balanced panel data sets and analyzed them through vector regression. We found that the number of posts on online stock message boards is positively related to prior order imbalance. We believe that our findings contribute to knowledge in IS and finance. Furthermore, this study suggests that investors should carefully monitor information on stock message boards to understand stock market sentiments.

  • This study was performed to investigate purchasing practice and size satisfaction in order to establish marketing strategy and produce free-size clothes for the male and female in their 20s. Results were as follows; first, regarding the size selection method, it has been found that 71.5% of subjects answered that they buy clothes as a sales clerk chooses for them without knowing the old size name or notation. Second, 47.5% of subjects answered that free size is the size, which fits well to 55~66 size. Meanwhile, 36.1% answered that free size fits well to any body type; while 4% answered that free size fits well to 77 size. Third, regarding the clothes kind, which consumers buy most as free size, consumers buy shirts and sportswear by free size. Fourth, they were observed to purchase free-size clothes "free-size clothes what I want" and to not purchase clothes "due to the lack of right sizes." The size notation of clothes products is basic information, by which consumers can tell whether the clothes fit to self or not before the consumer would wear the clothes and confirm its fitness. Therefore, it is suggested that all clothes products would be manufactured by having KS clothes size as basic data and they would use standard size notation so that consumers would not have confusion. Standardized size notation by proper education and utilization on new KS notation method and attitude change of companies and consumers on size are suggested.
