  • Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on the KR-RA steel plate as base metal by using four different types of flux coated electrodes: KT33, UWEE, UWCS, and TN20. UWEE, the individually designed flux coated underwater electrode, had good operability when compared with other domestic terrestrial electrodes, and imported goods. The hardness value and the portion of martensite of HAZ were increased, by using a rapid cooling rate, Mechanical properties were also examined experimentally with a multi-pass butt-welding specimen test. The individually designed flux coated electrode UWEE could be used in practice for underwater wet welds.

  • Objective of this paper is to develop a new approach involving the use of an Artificial Neural Network(ANN) and multiple regression methods in the prediction of process parameters on bead height for GMA welding process. Using a series of robotic are welding, multi-pass butt welds carried out in order to verify the performance of the neural network estimator and multiple regression methods. To verify the developed system, the design parameters of the neural network estimator are selected from an estimation error analysis. The experimental results show that the proposed models can predict the bead height with reasonable accuracy and guarantee the uniform weld quality.

  • Hybrid laser welding technology is a good process to reduce a thermal distortion and increase the productivity. However, it requires a high investment and a massive modification of the fabrication line such as a gantry system, milling machine for the edge preparation, high power laser system and weld machine. Therefore the development of an economical laser welding system is a crucial point to apply this system in shipbuilding yard. In this study, a portable hybrid laser welding carriage was developed for I-butt joint without edge milling. It is expected that the carriage type system could reduce investment cost.

  • This study is to inspect the influence of the initial residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior after the distribution of the initial residual stress is measured when the crack is growing from the compressive residual stress field. Also, the tensile residual stress field. Also, the influence of the variation of residual stress distribution on fatigue crack growth behavior at the crack tip is studied when the initial crack occurs on weld metal, bead interface and HAZ (Heat Affected Zone), respectively. For this purpose, CT-type specimen that crack parallel to the welding bead were manufactured by butt welding on the Al. Alloy 1100-O plate.

  • Dissimilar joining of AI 6013-T4 alloys and austenite stainless steel was carried out using friction stir welding technique. Microstructures near the weld zone and mechanical properties of the joint have been investigated. Microstructures in the stainless steel side and AI alloy were depended on the thermo-mechanical condition which they received. TEM micrographs revealed that the interface region was composed of the mixed layers of elongated stainless steel and ultra-fine grained AI alloy and intermetallic compound layer which was identified as the $Al_{4}Fe$ with hexagonal close packed structure. Mechanical properties were lower than those of 6013 AI alloy base metal, because tool inserting location was deviated to AI alloy from the butt line, which resulted in the lack of the stirring.

  • Initial oxide layer on the butt surface fragments during friction stir welding (FSW) and then often remains as a faint zigzag-line pattern on the cross section. When remnant of the oxide layer often adversely affects the mechanical properties in the weld, it is called as 'kissing-bond'. The present study systematically examines effect of oxide array on bend property in the root of friction stir (FS) welded Al alloy 1050 by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and then clarifies identity of the kissing-bond.

  • Friction stir welding is a solid phase welding process that does not melt the metal when welding. The FSW is the most remarkable and potentially useful new welding technique that is still in development. Friction stir butt welding process on 2 mm thick Al 1050 plates by utilizing a milling machine was experimentally studied. With the optimized heat generating tool welds could be achieved that are void and crack free. It was found that the friction stir welded tensile test specimens failed in the HAZ outside of the weld metal, and that the tensile strength was above 90% of that of the base metal.

  • When implementing butt joint welding of two plates, it is useful to attach end-tabs made of a metal with high heat conductivity (e.g., copper) at the front and back sides of the welded plates to prevent the bead from rolling down and prevent defects that may occur at the tips of the weld zone. In this study, the fin shape, which is known to have good heat discharging characteristics by natural convection, has been applied to enhance the cooling performance of the end-tab. From both experiment and numerical analysis, it was confirmed that end-tabs with fin-shaped holes have better heat discharging performance than end-tabs without holes. Through thermal and fluid flow analysis, the cooling rates of end-tabs with different hole shapes were estimated in order to figure out characteristics of shape factor that are important for the heat discharging performance. As a result, we found that the structure including vertical fins with optimal fin gap was the best-performing shape.

  • Deck plates and hatch coming of large container carrier and offshore structures are joined by ultra-thick plates whose thickness is more than 60mm. Traditionally FCAW has been used to join the thick plates in butt joint. However, FCAW has been replaced with EGW since the welding efficiency of EGW is higher than that of FCAW. Tandem EGW using two electrodes has been applied to vertical position welding by several shipyards. EGW requires one or two layers of bead whereas FCAW requires more than 20 layers of weld bead in thick welding. However, high welding residual stresses are generated by EGW since it uses higher heat input than FCAW. In the present study, a finite element model is suggested to predict the residual stresses induced by the tandem EGW. Butt specimen of EH40 TMCP shipbuilding steel plates vertical welding was modeled by a three-dimensional model. Residual stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction method and to verify the numerical result. The results show a good agreement with experimental result.

  • Recently, a demand of ferritic STS is increasing rapidly in automobile exhaust system. Exhaust manifolds are the part nearest to the engine so that the material is exposed to high temperature exhaust gas. Excellent heat resistant properties, especially high temperature strength, thermal fatigue resistance and high corrosion resistance are necessary for these parts. STS429L contains 15 weight percent of Cr and low Mo, so has good price competitive. And it has excellent high temperature strength and corrosion resistance, so receives attentions as material that applying to exhaust manifold. In tensile test of lap joint welded STS 429L, most of specimens are failed in base metal, but occurs brittle fracture in weld metals at some specimens in the face of good welding conditions. In the process of tensile test, lap joint welded STS429L specimens are transformed locally. The brittle fracture occurs that local transforming area exists in weld metals. But, butt welding specimens made by same materials showed ductile fracture in tensile test and bending test. In this study, suppose the reason of brittle fracture is in the combined local transform and tensile stress, through analysis of bead geometry, evaluate geometrical factor of brittle fracture in lap joint welded STS429L.
