The effects of a herbicide butachlor[2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl-N-(butoxymethyl) acetanilide] on the growth of the purple non-sulfur bacteria were investigated. The butachlor inhibited the growth of all species tested by 18-51%, except Rhodospirillum rubrum at concentrations of M, which would be field capacity. The photosynthetic growth rate of the species in the presence of butachlor was influenced by the nitrogen source. Cultures supplied with (NH&S04 showed a somewhat higher growth rate than those fixing dinitrogen, but they were more susceptible to butachlor (26-51%). On the contrary, butachlor enhanced the growth rate of Rhodospirillum rubrum in nitrogen gas conditions. When the culture was performed in medium with butachlor as the carbon source, the cells of fixing dinitrogen showed a higher exhaustion of butachlor than those supplemented with (N&)2S04, which exhaustion was examined by a decrease of the major absorbance at 213 nm and 260 nm. The exhaustion of butachlor as the carbon source had relation with the growth of the cells. The alkalization of culture supplemented with nitrogen gas was found in the cells treated with butachlor or untreated. The butachlor affected the carotenoid region but bacteriochlorophyll remained unaffected.
The effects of heavy metal, Cd on the degradation of the herbicide butachlor (N-Butoxymethyl-2-chlor-2',6'-diethylacetanilide) in soils were examined the laboratory. The degradation of the herbicide in soil was greatly inhibited by the amendment of the heavy metal, Cd. The inhibited rate of Cd concentration was high in the order of 30 ppm>20 ppm> 10 ppm>0 ppm. And tile degradation rate of butachlor was high in order of 80 $\mu$M>40 $\mu$M>20 $\mu$M. The effects of Cd on the degradation of the butachlor in soil varied with concentration of heavy metal and butachlor.
This study was conducted to monitor the residue of the herbicide butachlor in major crops. The residue monitoring covered 106 samples of rice, barley, garlic, onion, and strawberry colledted from markets of intensive cultivation area including Kwangju, Daegu, and Pusan. The residue levels in 27 sample of polished rice produced by applying the herbicide were below the detection limits adopted analytical method. The residue levels in 21 sample of garlic, 18 sample of onion, and 18 sample of strawberry which were succeeding crops after paddy rice were also below the detection limits. In consequent, all the samples resulted safe status in terms of the butachlor residue level in agricultural produce.
The dissipation of insecticide fenitrothion(O,O-dimethyl O-4-nitro-m-tolyl phosphorothioate), fungicide IBP(S-benzyl O, O-diisopropyl phosphorothioate), and herbicide butachlor(N-butozymethyl-2-chloro-2', 6'-diethylacetanilide) in flooded soil planted with rice plants was investigated in outdoor pot conditions. The half lives of IBP, butachlor and fenitrothion in the flooding water treated with IBP at 98g, butachlor at 352.8g, and fenitrothion at 100g ai/10a, were 3.6, 1.7 and within 1 day, respectively. The concentration of fenitrothion at 5 days after application was found to be less than 0.0lppm. In the case of IBP and butachlor after 20 days, the concentration was 0.025 and 0.004ppm, respectively. The concentration of fenitrothion, IBP, butachlor in a soil depth of 0-3cm was 0.07, 1.45 and 3.37ppm on the 3rd day after application, and below 0.05, 0.18, 0.39ppm after 7 days, respectively. However, 27 days after application concentration of IBP and butachlor at 0-5cm soil depth resulted in 0.04 and 0.05ppm, respectively. The disappearance of pesticides was remarkably rapid, compared to those in the some soil under the laboratory conditions. Differences in the concentration of IBP in different soil profiles were few, but amounts of butachlor were remarkably higher at 0-2cm soil depth than below 2cm soil depth.
In order to determine the possibility of reducing rice injury caused by CNP and butachlor application, the effects of IAA seed presoaking on CNP and butachlor action against early growth of rice seedlings were investigated under flooded direct-seeding and dry-seeded conditions. CNP and butachlor injury to rice was reduced by soaking rice seeds at 0.1, 1.0 and 10ppm of IAA solution for 36 hours before seeding under flooded condition and thus shoot length and dry weight of rice seedlings increased compared with those of IAA untreated seedlings. IAA seed pretreatment also overcame the inhibitory effect of CNP and butachlor under dry-seeded condition. Effect on reducing rice injury by IAA pretreatment was more remarkable when CNP applied under dry seeded condition and butachlor under flooded condition.
Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate safening effect of CGA 123'407 (4,6-dichloro-2-phenyl-pyrimidine) against pretilachlor, butachlor, and benthiocarb in rice plants. Butachlor and benthiocarb at 50 ppm or higher concentrations significantly inhibited rice growth and pretilachlor gradually inhibited growth of rice plants with increase in concentration starting from 0.5 ppm. CGA 123'407 at 0.1 ppm or higher concentrations was effective in reducing injury of rice plants when butachlor and benthiocarb were applied at rate of 10 ppm. Rice injury from pretilachlor at 10 ppm was also reduced by addition of CGA 123'407 at 0.25 ppm or higher concentrations Herbicidal activity of pretilachlor, butachlor, and benthiocarb was not affected by mixture treatments of CGA 123'407.
Antidoting effect of 1,8-naphthalic anhydride (NA) on butachlor [2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl-N-(butoxyethyl) acetanilide] phytotoxicity in rice was determined at different seeding depths and application rates of butachlor. The most sensitive response to NA was found in mesocotyl of rice (Oryza saliva L.). The mesocotyl length decreased with use of NA when seeded 2 to 4 cm deep, whereas no effect was obtained in plant height, root length and coleoptile length. Phytotoxic effect of butachlor to rice sown in vermiculite saturated with butachlor solutions decreased with use of NA at all seeding depths employed. However, depth protection was not observed when planted 3 to 4 cm deep without use of NA. Use of NA resulted in reduction in the phytotoxicity at concentrations of butachlor lower than 40 ppmw. The results indicated that the antidoting effect of NA was not due to reduction of mesocotyl elongation which would result in decrease in butachlor uptake through the mesocotyl.
Sensitivity, expressed in the $96h-LC_{50}$ determined with continuous flow system, was compared for eight developmental stages of Oryzias latipes with butachlor, diazinon and fenitrothion. Significance of the laboratory determined $96h-LC_{50}$ in real field situation was evaluated for butachlor using outdoor model agrosystem. In the laboratory tests, the most sensitive stage was post-larva stage IV(7 days after hatching) with $96h-LC_{50}$ of 0.14, 1.4, and 1.6ppm for butachlor, diazinon and fenitrothion, respectively, whereas the least sensitive stage was early embryo stage(1 day after fertilization), and then the susceptibility was somewhat stable after 21days after hatching. In the model agrosystem test, the highest concentration of 0.53ppm of butachlor in water was obtained at the 2nd day after application. The stages IV and VIII showed mortality of over 50% at 96 hours after application. It is concluded that the conventional use of butachlor in the field would cause significant adverse effect on O. latipes. It is suggested that sensitivity test at the early life stages with fish is an important part of the ecotoxicological assessment of chemicals.
The biololgical effect of the preemergence rice field herbicide, butachlor(commercial name, Machete) on purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum KS-301 has been studied under cultural conditions. Bacterial growth showed a tendency to decline according to the degree of the concentration of butachlor until $10^{-3}$ M and slmost stopped at $10^{-2}$M. The growth inhibitory action at $10^{-3}$M of butachlor was evident (4.2-18.7% inhibition of growth rate) but had little effect in nitrogen fixation. Conversely, there was a little enhancement effect(1%) in pyruvate, dinitrogen gas growing cultures. At concentration of $10^{-3}$ M, instead of spiral form, rod shapes were observed through phase contrast microscope and instead of vesicular intracytoplasmic membrane, irregular tubular forms were observed through electron microscope. Alkaline pH value slightly reversed tha inhibitory action of butachlor.
The soil adsorption coefficient of butachlor was measured mainly following the guidelines of U. S. EPA and OECD. The soil adsorption coefficient, Koc, of butachlor agreed well with the values in the literature. It was observed that soil adsorption differed about 5% with an increase or decrease by $15^{\circ}C$, implying that temperature does affect soil adsorption. The estimated value of the soil adsorption coefficient using water solubility and molecular structure deviated by factors of 2 and 20, respectively. The soil adsorption coefficient, Koc, of butachlor was 543 so this value means that butachlor is tightly bound to organic matter in soil and is considered immobile. A novel trial estimating the soil adsorption coefficient by molecular structure might be utilized to design efficient and/or non-polluting agrochemicals by organic chemists.
