Firms have many ways to expand their businesses including M&A. Big companies in online and offline businesses show different ways of expansion with different objectives to expand their digital businesses quickly. Expansions for technical reasons are to acquire technologies they do not have while those for business reasons are M&A for offline companies to have competence in markets by acquiring online companies. Other ways of expansions include spin-off and group participation after investments for startups. Various ways of expansions are chosen because they are optimal choices depending on situations the companies face, and they have different strengths and weaknesses. To analyze the strengths and weaknesses of those options for expansion at this stage would be academically valuable, and also practically meaningful in terms of providing insights for companies' decision making in choosing opitions for expansions. M&A of online companies to make multi-channels by offline companies have risks of failing to internalize online companies and have enough synergy effects. Also, spin-off is a relatively less risky way of expansion while the speed of expansion is slower than establishing external startups with some shares of equity and making them as affiliated companies. External startups are good for speed of expansion while there are risks of legal regulations and negative awareness by the public.

Purpose - This paper empirically investigates the relationship between the corporate value chain and performance of non- financial businesses of South Korean stock market companies. It aims to explore the evidence that can be used to infer the relationship between value chains and corporate performance in the case of firms forming a value chain with other companies with the means of an equity investment or a special business relationship. Design/methodology - Non-financial corporations listed from 2011 to 2017 on the securities market of South Korea are analyzed. The data used for analysis are found for transactions with the related party by year for all the corporations of non-financial industries in the securities market. Multiple analysis attempts are conducted including the relationship between the value chain and productivity, corporate value, risk-adjusted corporate value, and mediation effects of productivity. The empirical model employs sixteen variables including the value chain index which identifies its impact on various aspects of business performances. Findings - The results of this study clearly supports the phenomenon that corporate productivity and value are enhanced when the corporation expands its value chain established with domestic related firms and overseas companies. Such a positive effect is statistically significant even after the possible risk factors that accompany the expansion of value chain were considered, and productivity plays the role as a medicating variable in the effect of the value chain on the corporation values. Originality/value - The findings of this study confirms that domestic companies' expansion of their value chain centered on the related firms overseas that helped them in terms of the maximization of their productivity and corporate values. This study shows that Korean government's policy on expanding the corporate GVC can enhance the productivity and value of firms. The expansion of value chain and its impact on business performance has not been explored thoroughly, although it is getting more and more important in the global trade operation.

We address the power generation mix problem that considers not only nuclear and fossil fuels such as oil, coal and LNG but also renewable energy technologies. Unlike nuclear or other generation technologies, the expansion plan of renewable energy is highly uncertain because of its dependency on the government policy and uncertainty associated with technology improvements. To address this issue, we conduct a delphi survey and forecast the capacity of renewable energy. We further propose a stochastic mixed integer programming model that determines an optimal capacity expansion and the amount of power generation using each generation technology. Using the proposed model, we test eight generation mix scenarios and particularly evaluate how much the expansion of renewable energy contributes to the total costs for power generation in Korea. The evaluation results show that the use of renewable energy incurs additional costs.
The home furnishing and living market is growing because of the increasing interest of consumers in living spaces. In this trend, global fashion companies are seeking to increase sales by expanding their businesses by launching their own home lines or brands early, taking advantage of the various advantages of each brand. In response, this study was designed to examine the strategies necessary for domestic fashion brands to pursue their business in the future by conducting a case study and characteristics analysis of the living brands of foreign fashion companies in line with the trend of expanding their living-related businesses. The following is an analysis of the characteristics of the living brands of global fashion companies. First of all, utilizing the brand awareness of fashion companies; second, the strength of unique textile designs; and third, the expansion of synergy through the expansion of the business into various fields. Fourth, the lack of diversification in materials suitable for living products; fifth, the lack of information on quality; sixth, the lack of space and contents for living areas. Finally, a living brand strategy of a domestic fashion company was proposed as follows. First, it proposed collaboration with textile design companies and designers; second, it proposed exploring business models through the inclusion of brand licenses; and third, it proposed expanding the planning of living products of private brand by distribution companies.

This study aims to investigate the effects of e-purchasing on increasing transparency, expanding market access, and the efficiency of the government procurement process. This study also investigates how transparency of the procurement process, improved market access and the efficiency of the procurement process in e-purchasing will decrease the level of fraudulent government procurement in Indonesia. The questionnaires were distributed to the Procurement Service Units (ULP) of Local Governments through email. There are currently 542 ULPs in Indonesia based on the data of the Government Procurement Policy Institute (LKPP). However, only 520 ULPs had their email addresses traced, 120 ULP returned the questionnaires and the response rate is lower than it was expected. The data research was analyzed by a structural equation model (SEM) by using WarpPLS 7.0. The results reveal that the e-purchasing effect on the transparency, the expansion of market access, and the efficiency of the government procurement process. The other findings show the negative effect between efficiency in government procurement and fraud in government procurement. The findings of this study suggest that efficiency in the process of government procurement will minimize fraud in government procurement. However, transparency in government procurement and the expansion of market access was not sufficient to minimize fraud in government procurement.
This study sought to look at why Facebook and Twitter, which have dominated the social media market, are moving away from other services. To this end, we sought to identify the causes of churn in terms of firm-level strategic direction and resource allocation, which have not been actively presented to the studies. For this purpose, this study divides the social media firm's strategies into horizontal expansion strategy and vertical integration strategy based on the existing reports and researches, and how each of the representative firms' strategies affects users' switching behavior. As a result, there was a significant difference in the strategic direction of the social media firm, when a horizontal expansion strategy is taken, user's switching intention is higher than when a vertical integration strategy is taken. In addition, the switching intention according to the level of dependence showed that the lower the dependence on social media, the higher the intention to switch to other media. The findings are expected to provide highly realistic and concrete strategic alternatives for a variety of economic actors, such as individuals and companies who want to do business using social media.

The growth of digital news media and the stock price index has resulted in economic fluctuations in the fashion industry. This study examines the impact of fashion industry news and macroeconomic changes on the Textile & Wearing Apparel KOSPI over the past five years. An auto-regressive integrated moving average exogenous time series model was conducted using the fashion industry stock market index, the news topic index, and macro-economic indicators. The results indicated the topics of "Cosmetic business expansion" and "Digital innovation" impacted the Textile & Wearing Apparel KOSPI after one week, and the topics of "Pop-up store," "Entry into the Chinese fashion market," and "Fashion week and trade show" affected it after two weeks. Global economy these days is characterized with an unlimited competition due to Globalization and Information Age. Expansion of E-business accelerates informationized and globalized society and also intensifies market competition. As a result, global economy gradually develops to knowledge-based economy, and Business Service Industry becomes essential to the production increase in the manufacturing industry as well as its high added value comes into the spotlight as one of rapidly growing business industry. Business Service Industry has not yet been academically established, however, it may be defined as the industry of which production is a mediating service in the production process rather than in the final consumption. The export of the manufacturing industry has traditionally played mainstream role in Korea where economic development has been centered on the manufacturing export. However, as with increasing emphasis on the role of service sector and highly developed industrial field in the national economy, not only the relationships between manufacturing industry and service industry becomes rapidly more involved, but also the importance of highly competitive service industry becomes emphasized in accordance with open global economy after WTO system takes off. Now it is time we come to the realization that service is in the center of national competitive power as a result of global door open in all service industry.
