  • Principal component analysis and cluster analysis were conducted to comprehensively evaluate the water quality of Busan coastal area with the data collected seasonally by the analysis of surface water at 10 stations from 1997 to 2003. We noted that the first principal component was regarded as a factor related with the input of nutrient-rich fresh water and the second principal component as meteorological characteristics. Also we obtained that water qualities of station 4 and 9 were different from those of other stations in Busan coastal area.

  • Water quality improvement was predicted by using ecological modelling with reference to reduced load pollutants in the Busan coastal area. The results showed appreciable improvement in water quality at Suyeong Bay and Nakdong Estuary but little improvement in water quality from the central to eastern regions, except in Suyeong Bay by COD concentration. There were also similar results for T-N and T-P, because the Busan coastal area has a more open boundary than the other bays in the South Sea of Korea, resulting in a fast flow rate. The reducted COD load was less than that found in other coastal areas. Also, the reduction rate of the total load was less than that of other coastal areas in terms of water quality improvement. Applying the reduction load estimated in this study, it should be possible to improve the water quality of Suyeong Bay and Nakdong Estuary.

  • We assessed the coastal landscape of Jeju and Busan cities, respectively. In the study, we tried to estimate the coastal landscape based on the micro-scale and visualization landscape concepts. According to the estimation, the seawater pumping line causes the serious problem of coastal landscape. It means that water management treatment system of coastal region has been an important problem in Jeju city and Busan city since the slight problem was not corrected such as the distributions of pipeline of the pumping system making a bad view in coastal region. To solve the problem, we observed the pipeline distributions that were on the surface around the coastal region. we proposed two methods, that is, one is a short time treatment, the other is a long time one. The short is based on the colour treatment, which is pipeline colour changing into surround natural one. The long time is the construction design method which needs construction management method. Although the later method was very useful in Jeju island and Busan city. However, it takes a lot of time and money. Therefore, in the situation, the short time plan is more useful method than the long time one.

  • The purpose of this paper was to examine the status of unlawful actions in the fishing grounds located in the Ki-jang coastal region of Busan, Korea, and to develop an optimal fishing-ground plan that will increase the productivity of fisheries resources. We examined the impacts of important factors influencing the basic environment of the fishing grounds at the study site, as including the physical environmental conditions of water temperature and qualies. In addition, we administered a survey that focused on the necessity of enhanced maintenance of the fishing grounds at this site. As a result, we identified some required management action for the fishing grounds and proposed an optimal fishing-ground plan to increase productivity in the Ki-jang coastal region of Busan.

  • The coastal cold water near Ulsan, Korea, almost always appears in summer. From the results of some data analysis, it is found that this cold water has an important relation to the anticlockwise circulation appearing near the coast where the anticlockwise circulation turns its current direction from south to east.

  • The optical properties of the sea water were studied by use of underwater lux-meters in the coastal waters of Busan from May to November 1975. The absorption coefficient of the sea water in the area ranges from O. 169 to 1. 049 and the mean absorpflOn coefficient is 0.413. Maximum monthly mean absorption coefficient (0. 56) was observed in August, while the minimum was O. 338 in September. There was a distinct discontinuity layer of the absorption coefficient in accordance with the thermocline and the halocline in summer. The mean transparency of the area was 3. 8 meters, and transparency in autumn was higher than that in summer. The relation between absorption coefficient (m) and transparency (D) was deduced, m=1. 57/ D. The rate of light penetration at 5 m-layer of sea water was 2. 5 percent when the solar altitude was six degree in July 1975.

  • Groundwater which infiltrated in recharge areas discharges in the forms of evapotranspiration, baseflow to streams, groundwater abstraction and eventually flows into the sea. This study characterized radon-222 concentration and electrical conductivity (EC) in coastal groundwater discharge, well groundwater, Ilkwang Stream water, and seawater in the coastal area of Busan Metropolitan City and subsequently estimated groundwater discharge rate to the sea. The median value of Rn-222 concentration is highest in well groundwater (18.36 Bq/L), and then decreases in the order of coastal groundwater discharge (15.92 Bq/L), Ilkwang Stream water (1.408 Bq/L), and seawater (0.030 Bq/L). The relationship between Rn-222 concentration and EC values is relatively strong in well groundwater and then in seawater. However, the relationship is not visible between coastal groundwater discharge and Ilkwang Stream water. The groundwater discharge rate to the sea is estimated as $3,130m^3$/day by using radon mass budget model and $16,788m^3$/day by using Darcy's law.

  • In order to assess seasonal and geographical characteristics of pollutant Escherichia coli, we investigated its distribution in Nakdong River mouth and Busan coastal water from February 2013 to November 2015. The coastal area was divided into five different zones (I-V) based on the pollutant level and geographical characteristics. During the study periods, water temperature and salinity varied from 7.50 to 27.64℃ and 16.82 to 34.82 psu, respectively. The annual water temperature variation was characterized in temperate zone. The salinity was significantly (p<0.05) decreased in zone IV and zone III after heavy rain during summer season in 2014, resulting led to elevated E. coli biomass. The highest colony formation of E. coli was recorded at 6,000 cfu l-1 during autumn at station 1 (zone I). On the other hands, during all seasons of 2015, E. coli abundances were kept to be low level in zone III. The E. coli was not significantly (p>0.05) correlated with water temperature. However, the salinity was significantly (r=-0.53, p<0.05) correlated with the E. coli, implying that salinity plays a crucial role in the proliferation of E. coli. Consequently, E. coli in western Busan coastal water might have been significantly promoted by pollutant sources from Nakdong Rive discharge during the spring and summer rainy seasons depending on annual rainfall variations. On the other hands, E. coli in station 1 (i.e., Suyeong Bay) was obviously high due to influences of discharge water from municipal wastewater treatment plant. However, there was no clear seasonality of E. coli.
