The national standards for the installation of pedestrian crosswalks prohibits installation of crosswalks within 200 meters of nearby overpasses, underpasses, or crosswalks. In case the exceptional installation is required, the feasibility study is to be thoroughly conducted by the local police agency. However, it is an undeniable fact that the specific installation standards for optimal types and locations of crosswalks are not yet to be established. This paper examines the development of traffic accident prediction model applicable to different types and locations of bus stops(type A and type B) at mid-block intersections. Furthermore, it develops the poisson regression model which sets the "number of traffic accidents" and "traffic accident severity" as dependent variables, while using "traffic volumes", "pedestrian traffic volumes" and "the distance between crosswalks and bus stops" as independent variables. According to the traffic accident prediction model applicable to the type A bus stop location, the traffic accident severity increases relative to the number of traffic volumes, the number of pedestrian traffic volumes, and the distance between crosswalks and bus stops. In case of the type B bus stop model, the further the bus stop is from crosswalks, the number of traffic accidents decreases while it increases when traffic volumes and pedestrian traffic volumes increase. Therefore, it is reasonable to state that the bus stop design which minimizes the traffic accidents is the type C design, which is the one in combination of type A and type B, and the optimal distance is found to be 65 meters. In case of the type A design and the type B design, the optimal distances are found to be within range 60~70meters.

This study explores passengers' travel characteristics at six bus stops on the Seoul Ring Expressway using smart traffic card data. Based on the characteristics, political strategies to improve bus facilities on expressway are suggested. Firstly, among them two bus stops of Guri and Uiwang-Cheonggye have higher transfer rate of passengers, 37.56% and 36.9% of the total intercity (red) bus passengers on the expressway, respectively. Secondly, Uiwang-Cheonggye bus stop has the highest transfer rate, and Guri bus stop has also higher transfer rate and the highest on-and-off passengers. It implies that both bus stops need to be prioritized for improving bus stop facility, access roads, and connection facility between the bi-directional stops. Thirdly, Guri (down) bus stop has relatively longer waiting time for transfer, thus shorter bus headways running the bus stop should be considered. Lastly, most passengers using both stops come to and from Bundang-gu in Geongnam City. Overall, the results of this study would be helpful for transport planners to develop effective bus route policies and bus operation.
PURPOSES : It is desirable for buses to be parallel to the face of the bus shelter at a bus stop. In this way, passengers can safely use the buses without moving into the vehicle area. The study was a review of the current bus bay geometric guidelines, to determine whether they lead buses to stop parallel to the face of the bus shelter by analyzing vehicle trajectory. METHODS : A commercial software program for vehicle trajectory analysis was used under our assumptions about bus dimensions and geometric values. The final position of the bus was analyzed for multiple trajectory simulations, reflecting various geometric alternatives. RESULTS : Within the scope of the study, we concluded that the current design guidelines need to be revised by the design values suggested by the study. CONCLUSIONS : The results of the study suggested alternative design values for bus bay geometry, based on the assumption that buses should be parallel to the face of the bus shelter in order to prevent passengers from moving into the vehicle area.

In this study, the design characteristics and the cognition characteristics are investigated and conducted a survey of a bus stop, which most affects to the road scenery among the road fixture. and the result follows. The design characteristic of a bus stop is the uniform, as a box or appears urban image strongly which is not conform the Farm-village. The preference of the I image, A image and H image are high but on the other hand the preference of the E image, D image and F image are lower then average. As following conducted cognition characteristics, affirmative image is similar then the Korean traditional loop shape or using natural materials. It appears that the traditional image or the natural image is preferred then urban images by individuality of the Farm-village. Therefore, in the future, the design of the Farm-village bus stop needs to consider an area features and an environmental preservation design when design.

Smart cards are currently used in about 150 locales, including the metropolitan ares, and are utilized as a policy base for various public areas, including public transportation, bus fares, and public transportation requirements. However, excluding the metropolitan area and some metropolitan areas, there are many areas where the existing BIS data was unable to match station information on the data and Smart cards itself are not available on the bus stop information by the line. The purpose of this research was to produce bus stop information generated by the bus stop based on the bus route, and the actual stop information generated by the model presented in the study was derived by matching the actual station information.

Bus stop improvement conveys users their usability. It is essential that transportation jurisdictions should identify quantitative effects of a bus stop improvement to invest effectively and expand consistently. Nevertheless, there is currently no research to estimate the quantitative effect on bus stops improvement. In this study, the willingness to pay and the benefit-cost ratio for the bus stops improvement were estimated through a contingent valuation method based on user satisfaction. It was found that the bus stop improvement located in urban areas can achieve high-cost benefits, and it in suburban areas has a great impact on improving the quality of life of local residents. The results of this study will be used as a basis for expanding the bus stop facility improvement project.
Exclusive median bus lanes were installed to mitigate congestions on urban traffic networks. However, capacity analysis of signalized intersections having exclusive median bus lanes have not been provided in current capacity analysis process(analyses). This study aims to develop a method of capacity analysis for lane groups consisting of only buses at the signalized intersections having exclusive median bus lanes. Finding basic saturation flow rates for buses is critical since the operational characteristics between automobiles and buses are fairly different. A total of 8 intersections in Seoul were chosen as study sites. Saturation headways, distances between bus-stop and stopline, and grades of each approach were measured at the sites. It was found that the basic saturation headway and the basic saturation flow rate of buses were 3.27 s/veh and 1,100pc/h/ln, respectively. Adjustment factor for upstream bus-stop locations was estimated with 0.50 and 0.75 when the distances between bus-stop and stopline are 20m and 70m, respectively. This study explains that bus saturation flow rates are decreased in half if the bus stop locates within 20 meters from stop lines.
It is occurred bus arrival time errors when a bus arrives at a bus stop because of a variety of traffic condition such as traffic signal cycle, the time to get on and off a bus, a bus-only lane and so on. In this paper, bus delay time which is occurred as the result of traffic condition was estimated with Markov Chain process and bus arrival time at each bus stop was predicted with it. As the result of the study, it is confirmed to improve accuracy than the method of bus arrival time prediction with existing method (weighed moving average method) in case predicting bus arrival time using 7 by 7 and 9 by 9 matrixes.

This study proposed a method to determine the number and location of bus information terminals (BIT), which is a device to provide passengers with bus arrival time at bus stops in a Bus Information System (BIS). In low-density area, it is not efficient to survey bus demands such as the number of passengers at all bus stops due to time and cost. This kind of a survey would, however, competently cover all bus stops if performed inside the bus. The number of riding-on and -off passengers is observed for every bus stop, and this data collection is repeated over all day. Data obtained from the survey are aggregated each bus stop. This study defines Utility Index (UI), an aggregate each bus stop. Bus stops are ranked according to UI and determined for a BIT within budget limitation. As a case study, a bus line in Jeju island, Korea, was dealt with. This case showed that the more aggregate the better data quality. This study is expected to contribute to solving a location problem of BITs in a BIS.
