The soot yield has been studied by a premixed propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion in a specially designed disk-type constant-volume combustion chamber to investigate the effect of pressure, temperature and turbulence on soot formation. Premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of chamber at 45 degrees intervals in order to observe the soot formation under high temperature and high pressure. The eight converged flames compress the end gases to a high pressure. The laser schlieren and direct flame photographs with observation area of 10 mm in diameter are taken to examine the behaviors of flame front and gas flow in laminar and turbulent combustion. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in-situ laser extinction technique and simultaneously the corresponding burnt gas temperature by the two-color pyrometry method. The changes of pressure and temperature during soot formation are controlled by varying the initial charging pressure and the volume fraction of inert gas compositions, respectively. It is found that the soot yield increases with dropping the temperature and raising the pressure at a constant equivalence ratio, and the soot yield in turbulent combustion decreases as compared with that in laminar combustion because the burnt gas temperature increases with the drop of heat loss for laminar combustion.
When large size nozzle with low jet velocity is used, the buoyancy effect arises from the density difference among propane, air, and burnt gas. Flame characteristics in such buoyant jets have been investigated numerically to elucidate the effect of buoyancy on lifted flames. It has been demonstrated that the cold jet has circular cone shape since upwardly injected propane jet decelerates and forms stagnation region. In contrast to the cold flow, the reacting flow with a lifted flame has no stagnation region by the buoyancy force induced from the burnt gas. To further illustrate the buoyancy effect on lifted flames, the reacting flow with buoyancy is compared with non-buoyant reacting flow. Non-buoyant flame is stabilized at much lower height than the buoyant flame. At a certain range of fuel jet velocities and fuel dilutions. an oscillating flame is demonstrated numerically showing that the height of flame base and tip vary during one cycle of oscillation. Under the same condition. non-buoyant flame exhibits only steady lifted flames. This confirms the buoyancy effect on the mechanism of lifted flame oscillation.
This study was focused on the examination of the flame structure and the combustion characteristics of diffusion flame which was formed the turbulent shear flow of a double coaxial air jet system. The shear flow was formed by the difference velocity of surrounding air jet(U$\_$s/) and center air jet (U$\_$c/). So experimental condition was divided S-type flame (.lambda. > 1) and C-type flame (.lambda. < 1) by velocity ratio .lambda. (=U$\_$s//U$\_$c/). For examination of the flame structure and the combustion characteristics in diffusion flame, coherent structure was observed in flame by schlieren photograph method. We measured fluctuating temperature and ion current simultaneously and accomplished the statistical analysis of its. According to schlieren photograph, the flame was stabilized in the rim of the direction of lower velocity air jet, coherent eddy was produced and developed by higher velocity air jet. The statistical data of fluctuating temperature and ion current was indicated that reaction was dominated by higher velocity air jet. The mixing state of burnt gas and non-burnt gas was distributed the wide area at Z = 100 mm of C-type flame.
Experimental studies are conducted to investigate the flame stability and the thermal/fuel NOx formation characteristics of the low calorific value(LCV) gas fuel. Synthetic LCV fuel gas is produced through mixing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, nitrogen and ammonia on the basis that the thermal input of the syngas fuel into a burner is identical to that of natural gas, and then the syngas mixture is fed to and burnt with air on flat flame burner. Flame behaviors are observed to identify flame instability due to blow-off or flash-back when burning the LCV fuel gas at various equivalence ratio conditions. Measurements of NOx in combustion gas are made for comparing thermal and fuel NOx emissions from the LCV syngas combustion with those of the natural gas one, and for analyzing ammonia to NOx conversion mechanism. In addition, the nitrogen dilution of the LCV syngas is preliminarily attempted as a NOx reduction technique.
This paper provides a description of the combustion model to obtain an accurate dynamic engine phenomena that satisfies real-time simulation for model-based engine control. The combustion chamber is modeled as a storage device for mass and energy. The combustion process is modeled in terms of a two-zone model for the burned and unburned gas fractions. The mass fraction burnt is modeled in terms of a Wiebe function. The instantaneous net engine torque is calculated from the engine speed and the instantaneous piston work. The modeling accuracy has been tested with a cylinder pressure data on a test bench and also the ability of real-time simulation has been checked. The results show that combustion model yields sufficiently good performance for the model-based control logic design. However the influence factors effected on model accuracy are some room for improvement.
Flameless combustion, well known as MILD (Moderate Intensity Low oxygen Dilution) combustion or CDC(Colorless Distributed Combustion), is considered as one of the promising technology for achieving low NOx and CO emissions with improving thermal efficiency of combustion system. In this paper, the effects of exhaust gas dilution rate on formation of flameless combustion of liquid fuel were analyzed using three-dimensional numerical simulations for application of gas turbine combustor with high power density. Results show that the local high temperature region was decreased and flame temperature was spatially uniformly distributed due to higher dilution rate of burnt gas as similar pattern of gas phase flameless combustion. But the evaporation and mixing process of liquid fuel are found to be another important factors for formation of flameless combustion.
This work is concerned with the experimental and theoretical investigation of a kiln with the aim to obtain th best conditions of firing in a kiln, The 0.3$m^3$ down draft kiln of gas firing was designed and constructed. Temperature distributions in kiln combustion gas temperature primary and secondary air flow were measured in the kiln burnt with propane LP gas. And the temperature distri-butions of kiln surface were measured by the thermo camera.
High-speed ejection of burnt gases from the resonator cavity is essential for performance optimization of the chemical laser system. Additionally, to maintain the population of lasing species at a level for maximum optical power, the pressure within the cavity must be of order of 10 torr. In the present study, a small-scale ejector was designed and built for parametric study of its performance. High-pressure air was used as a motive gas. Measurements include schlieren visualization and pressure distribution trace near the ejector nozzle and along the diffuser downstream of the ejector. preliminary tests showed performance of the ejector is a function of parameters including mass flow rate and stagnation pressure of the motive gas, ejector nozzle area ratio, throat area of the diffuser downstream of the ejector.
