Solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs) can convert the chemical energy of fuel into electricity directly. With the rising fuel prices and stricter emission requirement, SOFCs have been widely recognized as a promising technology in the near future. In this study, lean premixed flame using the orifice swirl burner was analyzed numerically and experimentally. We used the program CHEMKIN and the GRI 3.0 chemical reaction mechanism for the calculation of burning velocity and adiabatic flame temperature to investigate the effects of equivalence ratio on the adiabatic flame temperature and burning velocity respectively. Burning velocity of hydrogen was calculated by CHEMKIN simulation was 325cm/s, which was faster than that of methane having 42 cm/s at the same equivalence ratio. Also Ansys Fluent was used so as to analysis the performance with alteration of swirl structure and orifice mixer structure. This experimental study focused on stability and emission characteristics and the influence of swirl and orifice mixer in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Systme burner. The results show that the stable blue flame with different equivalence ratio. NOx was measured below 20 ppm from equivalence ratios 0.72 to 0.84 and CO which is a very important emission index in combustor was observed below 160 ppm under the same equivalence region.
The tulip-inversion of flames in half-open tubes was investigated experimentally. Experiments was carried out in tubes with various shapes. The image of a flame propagation were pictured by HICCD(High speed intensified CCD) and the dynamic pressure of tubes was measured by a piezo pressure sensor. By analyzing the images of the flame propagation, we found the time and the distance for the occurrence of tulip-inversion. Regardless of the shapes of tubes, time of tulip-inversion are similar and inversely proportional to the burning velocity. But distances have different tendency. In a straight tube, the distance of tulip-inversion increases when the burning velocity increases. But in a converging tube, the distance of tulip-inversion decreases when a burning velocity increases. And the distance of tulip-inversion in a converging tube is much smaller than the distance of tulip-inversion in a straight tube. These results are caused by the deceleration of a flame when the diameter of a hole in open-side of a tube is small. The deceleration causes little effect on the time of tulip-inversion.

The laminar burning velocity in premixed Oxy-CH4 flames was studied in a lab-scale Bunsen burner. $CH^*$ chemiluminescence method and Schliren photography were used. Experimental results were compared with numerical prediction which was calculated with a CHEMKIN 3.7 package with a PREMIX code. Global equivalence ratio of oxy-CH4 mixture was varied from 0.5 to 2.0 in a laminar flow region. The laminar burning velocity was measured as 3.1 m/s for Schlieren photograph and 2.9 m/s for $CH^*$ chemiluminescence technique (angle method).
Characteristics of turbulent lifted flames in coflow jet have been investigated by varying initial temperature through the heating of coflow air. In the turbulent regime, liftoff height increases linearly with fuel jet velocity and decreases nonlinearly as the coflow temperature increases. This can be attributed to the increase of turbulent propagation speed, which is strongly related to laminar burning velocity. Dimensionless liftoff heights are correlated well with dimensionless jet velocity, which are scaled with parameters determining local flow velocity and turbulent propagation speed. This implies that the turbulent lifted flames are stabilized by balance mechanism between local turbulent burning velocity and flow velocity. Blowout velocity can be obtained from the ratio of mixing time to chemical time. Comparing to previous researches, thermal diffusivity should be evaluated from the initial temperature instead of adiabatic flame temperature.

Volatile organic compounds are air pollutants exhausting from industrial process, evaporation of solvent, and so on. Most of VOCs are the combustible gas of low calorific value as it is diluted by air. The systems burning such a hazardous gas need to increase enthalpy in order to increase flame stability. In this study an incinerator with reciprocating flow in the honeycomb ceramic has been used for the experiment of VOCs control. By the reciprocating flow system, the enthalpy of combustion gas is effectively regenerated into the enthalpy increases of the combustible gas through the honeycomb ceramic, which provides a heat storage. The position of the reaction zone is strongly dependent on the parameters of mixture velocity and time frequency. Flame front is changed to the point where burning velocity is coincided with burning velocity in the honeycomb ceramic. In this system it is important that flame front should be located symmetrically at the center of honeycomb ceramic for the purpose of increasing the reaction rate at one point. Peak temperature becomes higher with decreasing time frequency, at which the flow direction is regularly reversed.
In this study, the laminar burning velocities of SNG fuel were studied using both experimental measurements and kinetic simulations. They were measured using the angle method of Bunsen flame configuration and the annular diverging channel combustor. And they were also numerically calculated by CHEMKIN Package with GRI 3.0 mechanisms. Spectrometer was used for characteristics of flame chemiluminescence of SNG fuels. From results of this work, first, we found that according to adding $H_2$ contents in the fuels the laminar burning velocities of SNG fuels were increased. And second, we also discovered existence of OH*, CH*, $C_2*$, HCO*, $CH_2*$ radicals and their correlation.

Flow velocity was measured using a hot wire anemometer. Turbulence intensity was in proportion to mean flow velocity regardless of swirl velocity. And integral length scale has proportional relation with swirl velocity regardless of measurement position. Flame speed calculated by radius of visualized flame was increased and then decreased according to lapse of time from spark. Maximum flame speed was increased according to increase of turbulence intensity. Burning speed and flame transport effect increased with increase of swirl velocity, but ratio of burning speed to flame speed decreased with increased of swirl velocity. Mass fraction burned versus volume fraction burned was increased in proportion to the increase of turbulence intensity, caused by increase of combustion promotion effect according to increase of turbulence intensity and scale.
The coflow velocity effect on the minimum extinguishing concentration(MEC) was investigated experimentally in heptane cup-burner flames. Various inert gases($N_2$, Ar, $CO_2$, He) were added into the oxidizer to find the critical concentration and the effectiveness of the agents on flame extinction. The experimental results showed that the MECs were increased with increasing coflow velocity for most inert gases except helium, but the higher coflow velocity induced the lower burning rates of heptane. This indicated that the increase of coflow velocity resulted in the decrease of fuel velocity evaporated from fuel surface, and hence the stain rate on the reaction zone was also decreased. In the case of helium as a additive, the extinguishing concentration was independent of the coflow velocity because the heat conductivity was ten times larger than the other inert gases and flow effect by a strain rate might be compensated for heat loss to the surroundings.

The ignition characteristics of repetitive electric sparks into a quiescent acetylene-air premixture and LPG-argon-air premixture was investigated by using a home-made Repetitive-Spark-Generator(RSG) to elucidate the effect of fuel burning velocity to ignition ability of RSG. Results show that the optimum spark delay time interval is strongly related with fuel burning velocity, or implicitly with characteristic reaction time scale of each fuel.
