  • Due to the needs of design optimization and productivity for modernized Korean traditional house, standardization of Korean traditional building components is proceeding by BIM (Building Information Modeling). Currently, most of BIM software support object-based parametric modeling. By means of parameterized Korean traditional building components, the shape and assembly relation can be controlled. Although IFC(ISO/PAS 16739), which is an international standard in the AEC field, has been developed for information exchange among BIM software, IFC and other existing common data formats cannot be exchangeable parametric information. For the exchangeable parametric information within IFC, the authors defined meta-data by using Pset(Property-Set). The authors analyzed results about interoperability test in Revit $Architecture^{TM}$, $ArchiCAD^{TM}$ and Digital $Project^{TM}$. In order to solve found problems, the authors developed a translator to improve interoperability among BIM software.

  • This paper recognized a need in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry for new programs and methods of producing reliable energy simulations using BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology. Current methods and programs for running energy simulations are not very timely, difficult to understand, and lack high interoperability between the BIM software and energy simulation software. It is necessary to improve on these drawbacks as design decision are often made without the aid of energy modeling leading to the design and construction of non-optimized buildings with respect to energy efficiency. The goal of this research project is to develop a new methodology to produce energy estimates from a BIM model in a more timely fashion and to improve interoperability between the simulation engine and BIM software. In the proposed methodology, the extracted information from a BIM model is compiled into an INP file and run in a popular energy simulation program, DOE-2, on an hourly basis for a desired time period. Case study showed that the application of this methodology could be used to expediently provide energy simulations while at the same time reproducing the BIM in a more readably three dimensional modeling program. With the aid of an easy to run and easily understood energy simulation methodology, designers will be able to make more energy conscious decisions during the design phase and as changes in design requirements arise.

  • Given the barriers to implement green building rating systems, Building Information Modeling (BIM) was suggested as an effective solution integrating information into one model and saving substantial time to facilitate certification process. Synergies between BIM and Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED), the most widely used rating system, have been researched for a few decades. This paper demonstrates literature review about the development of integration between BIM and LEED. The research focuses on synergies between BIM and Green Standard for Energy & Environmental Design (G-SEED) in Korea, as one of important strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emission. The research compares LEED and G-SEED related items based on evaluation contents. The result manifests G-SEED and LEED share many common items in different degrees. Therefore, it is entirely possible for G-SEED and BIM to adapt same developing mode of LEED and BIM. Moreover, the study measures the potential of BIM in application process of G-SEED certification by investigation of credits in LEED and G-SEED can be earned by BIM. The results of paper indicate the documentation support LEED and G-SEED may be prepared directly, semi-directly and indirectly via sustainability analyses software in BIM.

  • In this paper, for deriving core function requirements of facility maintenance using BIM(Building Information Modeling) customized surveys were conducted with 30 facility managers during 6 momths from July 2014. As a result, 19 core function requirements for efficient facility maintenance are drawn. The core of Building facility management function is that opinions of facilities maintenance managers should be fully reflected than that of BIM experts. In the future, the development of maintenance programs based on BIM should be made fully by reflecting the opinions of building facility managers on the basis of this questionnaire survey results.

  • The re-locatable military facilities are significant in combat zones with limited infrastructures. Military tents are particularly one of the most essential components in the battlefields, During the offensive operation. This study assesses educational effectiveness of the 4D Building Information Modeling (BIM), which is used to deliver educational information with considering re-locatable military facility construction. Furthermore, the real time for constructing temporary concentration camp was measured, By using analysis of variance associated with the educational effects of the 4D BIM. Statistically, understandability of facility construction using 4D BIM was found to be higher than the conventional educational materials with field manual.

  • Lately, Building Information Modeling (BIM) emerges as the most promising technology, now is expected to bring a great deal of improvement of productivity in every aspect of the construction industry. One of the BIM based scheduling is to use BIM model as a base for applying to schedule analysis and simulation tools. This type of tools may incorporate a various types of information such as the building model, construction method information, resource information, productivity information, rules and constraints to optimize activity sequencing. This paper proposes a framework of BIM based simulating system which can be used to optimize construction processes, especially for the floor construction cycle. For the purpose, all of the necessary components of the system will be defined and represented, and next an algorithm will be introduced to demonstrate the principle of simulating operation. The benefits of this technique are basically two : to test and optimize construction methods in respect of the construction duration and to reduce the floor construction cycle.

  • In this research, a new methodology to perform building energy analysis using Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard has been studied. With the help of Archicad 14 modeling software, a 3D test model is generated and then exported to IFCXML format. A ruby code program retrieves the building information from the resulting IFCXML file using Nokogiri library. An INP file is created and gets ready for next energy analysis step. DOE 2.2 program analyzes the INP file and gives a detailed report of the energy cost of the building. Case study shows when using the IFC standard method, the Interoperability of the energy analysis is greatly improved. The main stream 3D building modeling software supports IFC standard. DOE 2.2 is able to read the INP file generated by IFC file. This means almost any 3D model created by main stream modeling software can be analyze in terms of energy cost Thus, IFC based energy analysis method has a promising future. With the development and application of IFC standard, designers can do more complex and easy-to-run energy analysis in a more efficient way.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) provides many advantages when it is adopted in virtual design construction, to analyze constructability, etc. For this reason, advanced countries have made it mandatory to adopt BIM in public construction projects. The Korea Public Procurement Service announced that from 2016, BIM adoption will be mandatory in every construction project in Korea. Currently, however, it is not possible to fully adopt BIM in the building design process domestically because BIM-based systems have not been used broadly in Korea's building approval system (Seumter). In this research, four challenges were drawn from a focus group interview. Focusing on tackling one challenge, this paper reviewed previous research into building approval systems and the building approval systems of Singapore, the U.K. and the U.S., and identified elements of the building approval application process and presents a system to create and manage the information. The system supports the creation and management of information and 2D drawings from an IFC-based BIM model. We expect that the system will encourage designers to use BIM from the beginning of the design process and ultimately increase the efficiency of design in a BIM-based project.

  • The main purpose of this study is to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the application of BIM to the educational facilities. To do so, we model Sanggye elementary school project using BIM, and consider other efficient methods for the lack of the information caused by the traditional blueprint. In addition, we try to lay the groundwork for expanding the application of BIM during the life cycle of an educational facility through researching a system to set up an accurate building information.

  • Recently as construction projects have been complicated, it has been wearing thin to draw on their personal experiences for management. Although the advance of IT, using the technology for construction is insufficient in contrast to other industries. BIM has been steadily used in construction projects, but it is not easy to find the case of successful use. This research considers ways in which BIM technology can be applied to useful management on a construction site and derives a method of application of using BIM for a Mega-complex Building Project especially.
