Urban Campus Expansion in City Block A Case of New York University, New York City, USA

  • This study explores the issue of campus expansion of an urban university using an in-depth case study of New York University in New York City, USA. It investigates the physical pattern and development mechanism of the campus expansion process on a city grid structure. The three elements that characterize NYU's recent campus expansion, are (1) the university's commitment to building a student community around a public open space on a subway network, (2) four types of property acquisition and building development practiced by the university with private developers for space leasing, building renovation and development under changing local development circumstances, and (3) the city's initiative for attracting the private sector whose development activities influence the university's development dynamics. These findings suggest that the expansion planning of an urban university, due to its location in a city, should be placed on a local planning agenda, which can positively contribute to public goals through the collaborative engagement of the private and public sectors.

  • Increasing the user's need in the building facilities, the architects, engineers, and building managers must consider the user's opinion when they plan and construct the buildings. When planning and managing of the buildings, accepting the user's opinion is desirable and indispensible to solve the Problems about the architectural facilities between suppliers and users. To supply the efficient working environments, use the check listing tools and operate the post occupancy evaluation. The real estate and development company is selected for the evaluation. It is renovated in 2000 to fit in its working environment. The process of the evaluation is proceeded both private and group working spaces and facility and management of the buildings with 10 categories. Following the result of Post occupancy evaluation, the users of the building are mostly satisfied with their working environments after the renovation. However, the categories in thermal environment and indoor air and supply for office work need to be improved in advance.

K대학병원 병동부 이중복도형의 개선을 위한 사용자 요구 조사연구 (A Study on the User Needs for Renovation of Race Track Type of Nursing Units in K University Hospital)

  • Purpose: General hospital in korea is getting large-scaled, specialized and upgraded. So, nursing unit of race track type has been advanced along with a spatial organization, building equipment and environmental approach. This study is to search the guidelines for renovation of nursing unit with race track type in the case of K university hospital in Daejeon. Methods: 9 cases of recently opened general hospital has been analyzed for spatial and environmental design solution. Questionnaires and interviews about user needs of nursing staff, patient and visitors, have been conducted for a nursing care system and facility of nursing units in K university hospital. Results: The user needs are represented as followings. Center core public zone in each floor plan and center core nursing station and supporting areas in nursing unit are good for an adjacency and separation of spatial organization. Toilet of group patient room is necessary to equip for easy, safe and infective aspects, and so toilet install will decrease the patient number and increase the nursing care service. Hall type of station front is good for visibility and observation. It is appropriate to renovate into south facing group patient room for privacy, enough space for nursing care facility and supporting area, enough width of door to move portable medical equipment, room for medical doctor and practical student, noise absorbing of day room. Implications: Upgrading the nursing care service and facility equipment is necessary to reflect the user needs and cooperate with hospital management.

  • 공동주택의 리모델링에서는, 견해차와 이해의 대립으로 프로젝트추진이 지연되는 경우가 많다. 이러한 분쟁은 공용부분과 전용부분의 애매한 경계선과 구분 때문인 경우가 많다. 본 연구에서는 한국과 일본의 현행관리규약이 이와 같은 관점에서 고찰되었다. 결론을 간추리면 다음과 같다. 1)현행관리규약에 의하면, 소유, 사용 및 관리의 정의에 있어서 일본이 한국보다 구체적이다. 2)공용부분과 전유부분의 구분은 외벽의 내측선이 한국과 일본에서 공통적으로 기준이 되어있다. 그러나 한국은 일본 보다 목적과 실행, 정의와 기술에서 일관성이 부족하다. 3)일본은 공유의 위계를 단지-주동-개별 주호로 구분하여 정의하고 있으나, 한국은 그렇지 않다. 4)일본은 전용으로 사용되는 공유부분에 대하여 정의 하고 있으나, 한국은 그렇지 않다.

  • This study examined public building remodeling projects in France. Through investigating cases of ancient buildings remodeled in France, the study aimed to provide fundamental data and analysis for remodeling public buildings. Accordingly, seven cases were analyzed in terms of remodeling methods, architectural characteristics, methods of conservation, and restoration of ancient historical buildings, as well as a change of usage of an existing building. As a result, this study found the criteria of French ancient building remodeling. The remodeling methods of an existing building vary in their goals and strategies depending on how the old architectural elements are persevered, as well as how new elements are added to form their unique characteristics. Thus, the remodeling methods are classified into four types based on causes: restoration, extension, renovation and rebuilding. Such methods are used jointly rather than individually. The ancient building remodeling is the process of recreating new functions and new artistic values to preserve the cultural and artistic values of existing historic buildings.

기본지리정보 구축 우선순위 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on Evaluation of the Priority Order about Framework Data Building)

  • Geographic Information has been used widely for landuse and management, city plan, and environment and disaster management, etc., But geographic information has been built for individual cases using various methods. Therefore, the discordancy in data, double investment, confusion of use and difficulty of decision supporting system have been occurred. In order to solve these problems, national government is need to framework database. This framework database was enacted for building and use of National Geographic Information System and focused on basic plan of the second national geographic information system. Also, the framework database was selected of eight fields by NGIS laws and 19 detailed items through meeting of framework committee since 2002. In this research, The 19 detailed items( road, railroad, coastline, surveying control point etc.,) of framework database consider a Priority order, In the result of this research, the framework database is obtain to a priority order for building and the national government will carry effectively out a budget for the framework database building. Each of 19 detailed items is grouping into using the priority order of the framework database by AHP analysis method and verified items by decision tree analysis method. The one of the highest priority order items is a road, which is important for building, continuous renovation, and maintain management for use.

대학도서관 공간구성 변화 및 평가방안 연구 (A Study of the Changes in University Library Space and their Assessment Strategies)

  • 대학도서관은 급변하는 정보통신기술과 대학환경에 대응하기 위해 그동안 도서관의 신축 및 리노베이션을 통한 공간구성의 변화를 시도해왔다. 이러한 변화는 대학도서관의 전통적 기능인 자료 보존 및 제공 그리고 대학교 구성원의 학습에 필요한 공간과 서비스를 제공하는 지원자(supporter)의 기능을 넘어서, 공간구성의 변화를 통해 학습과 연구를 지속할 수 있게 하는 조력자(facilitator)의 기능으로의 전환에 대한 필요성이 반영된 것으로 해석될 수 있다. 하지만 대학도서관 공간 기능의 변화와는 달리 이에 대한 평가는 여전히 리노베이션이나 신축 전후의 도서관 이용자의 만족도 혹은 도서관 이용의 변화에 국한되고 있어서, 대학의 비전과 목표를 반영한 도서관의 학습커먼즈(learning commons)로서의 기능을 평가하는 측정도구 개발의 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 대학도서관 공간구성에 대한 변천과정을 분석하고 이에 대한 평가와 관련된 연구조사를 통해 대학도서관의 공간구성에 대한 효과성을 평가하는 도구의 개발과 미래의 공간구성 및 평가 전략을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 하였다.

웹을 기반으로 한 실내건축공사의 원가관리 시스템 개발에 관한 연구 (A study on the development of a web-based cost management system of building interior projects)

  • This study aims at the development of a cost management system in building interior projects. Renovation and remodeling is activated and expanded much more being compared with new building construction at present. After Interior project proceeding must get out of simple estimate and assumption, then its be needed a formal work process and computerized cost management. Proceeding a building interior project management was proceed in the office and the field. Cost break down, especially, depend on the field manger and used fiend managing money because its not checked by cost manager in office manger. For this study, cost factors are defined in terms of cost break-down interior works which consist of materials and labors. A data model for cost factors was developed, and a relational database is used to realize cost data management based upon this data model. Data input and output are achieved by internet from both of wired PC and mobile phone. This system can timely display a number of needed reports for cost management that identifies cash flow and predicts budget for cost break-down works in interior projects.

창덕궁 선정전의 의례 공간적 건축 구조 (The Architectural Structure of Seonjeong-jeon in Changdeok Palace as a Ceremonial Hall)

  • Seonjeong-jeon, the semi-great hall in Changdeok Palace, was constructed in a highly formal and conservative style and accommodated official ceremonies. However, the contemporary modification of the building has distorted or eliminated features including the two side doors on the front, the floor coverings, and the throne base (Jwa-tap) that consisted the most significant part of the throne. Seonjeong-jeon originally had three doors that stood between each pair of columns on the front side, respectively. The courtiers accessed the building through the side doors, while the central door was exclusively designated for the king. However, the renovation in 1999 ignored the political context of the architectural form of the building and changed the side doors into windows, damaging the traditional structure inherited from the early Joseon Dynasty. Although the building currently has traditional wooden floor structure (Woomul-maru), it was originally covered with square brick tiles (Bang-jeon) before the Japanese occupation, following the customs of early Joseon Dynasty. The throne was placed to the north of the central door and consisted of the throne base and a decorative roof (Dang-ga). A canvas (Jang-ja), which featured the royal symbolic painting of Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks, was also installed between the two columns that connected the base and the roof. Nevertheless, only the columns and the blank canvas remain nowadays after the removal of the base.

피크부하용 혼소엔진발전의 경제성 분석 (An Economic Analysis on Dual-fuel Engine Generation for Peak Load)

  • Recently, lack of power reserve margin was observed quite often. In this paper, we studied the method to secure power source for a short time, to cut the utility power peak load, and to reduce the users electricity bills. Emergency diesel generator of an office building is to be converted into a dual-fuel engine generator which is responsible for a portion of the peak load. Compared to the conventional diesel fuel generator, the proposed dual-fuel engine is able to reduce the generation power cost by dual-fuel combustion, and it also mitigates the building's utility power peak load by charging the building's peak load. If the dead resources (a group of emergency dual-fuel engine generators), as a Virtual Power Plant, are operating in peak time, we can significantly reduce future large power development costs. We investigated the current general purpose electricity bills as well as the records of the building electric power usage, and calculated diesel engine generator renovation costs, generation fuel costs, driving conditions, and savings in electricity bills. The proposed dual-fuel engine generation method reduces 18.1% of utility power peak load, and turned out to be highly attractive investment alternative which shows more than 27% of IRR, 76 million won of NPV, and 20~53 months of payback periods. The results of this study are expected to be useful to developing the policy & strategy of the energy department.
