  • The purpose of this study is to ensure an amicable material quality control in the construction site through investigating a process which can impact the construction material quality. For it, a worker interview and questionnaire survey was conducted through a direct field visit. The visited construction sites are composed of 79% construction site and 21% engineering site. As the respondents of questionnaire survey, the quality control workers were 72% of total respondents. Next, the construction worker, handymen, field representatives and others formed 7%. The interview with the quality control staff was conducted with the items including the construction site quality control guide, incoming inspection and material management. Through this survey, the problems of quality control by progress phase were derived. It could be known that the management and measures by each phase were urgently required. It also was indicated that a selection of low-priced material caused by low price bidding could badly impact the construction and safety. Also, in relation to the opinions such as the insufficient quality control and heavy work-load, the improvements are required. For the effective quality control in the construction site, the material quality control procedures suitable for the phase of construction progress must be presented in the present quality control. Also, the standards for it need to be established.

  • General criteria for the quality of porous concrete have not been established yet in Korea. And yet, pavement and construction have been performed. In this paper, guidelines on the construction site quality control of porous concrete were developed in order to establish criteria for resolving the issues and problems of porous concrete, to establish methods for improving poor performance, and to manage porous concrete more systematically. In addition, a guide for the construction site quality control of porous concrete, which was appropriate for reality, was developed by researching several quality control guides and maintenance at construction sites. The guide consists of a total of nine chapters such as Application Range, Overview, the Structure of Porous Concrete, the Design of Package Thickness, Package Materials for Porous Concrete, Construction Methods, Quality Assurance and Inspections, Construction Site Quality Control, and Maintenance. It describes quality control guidelines in all steps such as methods for transporting porous concrete from the factory to the construction site, cautions for construction work at construction sites, maintenance, and management. The Guide for the Construction Site Quality Control of Porous Concrete is expected to ensure the quality of porous concrete, to reduce national costs for quality assurance, and to help ensure the health and safety of Korean people.

  • The performance of a building material degrades as time goes by and the failure of the material is often defined as the point at which the performance of the material reaches a pre-specified degraded level. Based on a stochastic deterioration model, a performance based service life prediction method for building materials and components is developed. As a stochastic degradation model, a gamma process is considered and lifetime distribution and service life of a material are predicted using the degradation model. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the use of the proposed service life prediction method.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the characteristics of self-reported symptoms of workers in office building with HVAC system, and also to provide better workplaces in terms of comfort and health. The methods employed in this study include literature review, field observations, and survey. The self-reported symptoms of workers such as headache, fatigue, itching and dryness regarded as SBS symptoms commonly occur after around 3:00 pm and are relieved after leaving their office buildings. according to results in previous studies, above are possibly related to CO2 concentrations. It is also found work environment factors and the satisfaction on indoor environment are all associated with worker's health. Hopefully, this overview of current work environments concerning the level of satisfaction and health problems of workers would help create healthier indoor environment.

  • Multi-use housing and commercial buildings have been emerged according to social and economic changes of CBD in Seoul Metropolitan Areas. The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of the multi-use building, to analyze the problems on the base of survey and to suggest the solutions for architectural planning, focusing on eco-friendly dwelling environment. A field survey with 46 subjects has been carried out with structured questionnaire. Some problems in planning of the complex building have been discussed in terms of environmental issues and design criteria. In conclusion, basic planning directions for improving the building environmental quality have been suggested.

  • This paper aims to analyze relations between design errors prevented by building information modeling (BIM)-based design validation and their impacts in order to identify critical consideration factors for successfully implementing BIM-based design validation in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) projects. More than 800 design errors detected by BIM-based design validation in two BIM-based projects in South Korea are categorized according to its causes and work types. The relations between causes and work types of design errors and project delay, cost overrun, low quality, and rework generation that can be caused by the errors are analyzed through conducting logistic regression. Characteristics of each design error are analyzed by conducting face-to-face interviews with practitioners in the two BIM-based projects. As the results, the impacts of design error causes on predicting project delay, cost overrun, low quality, and rework generation were the highest.

  • In modern architecture, the air-tight construction aimed at saving the energy rather causes ventilation problems and the artificial materials for cost reduction worsen the residential quality. To deal with such negative effect, the study on evaluating the health performance becomes increasingly critical. Among the various factors such as design quality, selected material, construction method and mechanical system that shall be subject to evaluation to identify the health performance of the building, the study was aimed at investigating the legal standards associated with healthy building in various countries. Such evaluation items will provide inputs for an attempt to build legal criteria for a building health performance rating system in Korea.

  • Radon has been considered the greatest source of exposure within the total radiation exposure of the human body. xposure from radon, which exists in indoor air quality, lacks public perception, Radon, which exists anywhere on earth, is not regarded as a state of attention even if it is above the average level. Indoor radon exposure situations are not intentionally introduced, and essentially the attention and responsibilities of radon exposures are assumed to be in indoor occupants. So, these are caused by common uranium and thorium scattering on Earth, and are brought into the building by fine cracks or exposed indicators of the buildings. Therefore, this study aims to reduce the risk of radon rays and reduce radon, which induces diseases caused by breathing in the body of indoor air pollutants and emitting diseases by emitting alpha rays from the radon gas.

  • As high-rise and irregularly shaped building structures have become a trend at home and abroad, BIM technology is now being developed and accepted widely. However, the BIM data and information generated in the design phase cannot be actively reutilized in the construction stage. This is because the major interests of construction companies include working process and cost estimation, while there is not usually enough BIM data created to support these activities. In order to resolve this issue, we need to set up BIM modeling guides that make it possible to extract correct quantity take-off from BIM data. Quality checks are also necessary to ensure that the resulting BIM data is correct. This study suggests ways of securing BIM quality for correct quantity take-off, which is critical for BIM technology applied to the building construction process and its cost estimation.

  • Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is an illness symptom such as irritation of eyes, skin eruption and vomit ing in newly constructed buildings. It is mainly due to the harmful gases from the materials installed in building such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Semivolatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs), floating bacteria, fungi, fungal spores and viruses, human bioeffluents in many modem buildings. The general ways to improve the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) are ventilating, utilizing eco-material without harmful gases and reducing or removing harmful gases through additional treatment to the building materials. This study aimed to improve the Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) by applying surface coating on the building materials and to make safe living environments through the analysis of air quality before and after surface coating treatment in buildings.
