This paper demonstrates a real-time hybrid substructuring (RTHS) shake table test to evaluate the seismic performance of a base isolated building. Since RTHS involves a feedback loop in the test implementation, the frequency dependent magnitude and inherent time delay of the actuator dynamics can introduce inaccuracy and instability. The paper presents a robust stability and performance analysis method for the RTHS test. The robust stability method involves casting the actuator dynamics as a multiplicative uncertainty and applying the small gain theorem to derive the sufficient conditions for robust stability and performance. The attractive feature of this robust stability and performance analysis method is that it accommodates linearized modeled or measured frequency response functions for both the physical substructure and actuator dynamics. Significant experimental research has been conducted on base isolators and dampers toward developing high fidelity numerical models. Shake table testing, where the building superstructure is tested while the isolation layer is numerically modeled, can allow for a range of isolation strategies to be examined for a single shake table experiment. Further, recent concerns in base isolation for long period, long duration earthquakes necessitate adding damping at the isolation layer, which can allow higher frequency energy to be transmitted into the superstructure and can result in damage to structural and nonstructural components that can be difficult to numerically model and accurately predict. As such, physical testing of the superstructure while numerically modeling the isolation layer may be desired. The RTHS approach has been previously proposed for base isolated buildings, however, to date it has not been conducted on a base isolated structure isolated at the ground level and where the isolation layer itself is numerically simulated. This configuration provides multiple challenges in the RTHS stability associated with higher physical substructure frequencies and a low numerical to physical mass ratio. This paper demonstrates a base isolated RTHS test and the robust stability and performance analysis necessary to ensure the stability and accuracy. The tests consist of a scaled idealized 4-story superstructure building model placed directly onto a shake table and the isolation layer simulated in MATLAB/Simulink using a dSpace real-time controller.
This paper presents statistical analysis results of wind speed and atmospheric turbulence data measured from more than 30 anemometers installed at 15 different height levels on 325 m high Beijing Meteorological Tower and is primarily intended to provide useful information on boundary layer wind characteristics for wind-resistant design of tall buildings and high-rise structures. Profiles of mean wind speed are presented based on the field measurements and are compared with empirical models' predictions. Relevant parameters of atmospheric boundary layer at urban terrain are determined from the measured wind speed profiles. Furthermore, wind velocity data in longitudinal, lateral and vertical directions, which were recorded from an ultrasonic anemometer during windstorms, are analyzed and discussed. Atmospheric turbulence information such as turbulence intensity, gust factor, turbulence integral length scale and power spectral densities of the three-dimensional fluctuating wind velocity are presented and used to evaluate the adequacy of existing theoretical and empirical models. The objective of this study is to investigate the profiles of mean wind speed and atmospheric turbulence characteristics over a typical urban area.
Seismic analyses of a pile under a large rigid basement foundation embedded in the homogeneous soil layer were performed practically by a response displacement method assuming a sinusoidal wave form. However, it is hard to take into account the characteristics of a large mat foundation and a heterogeneous soil layer with the response displacement method. The response displacement method is relevant to the 2D problems for longitudinal structures such as tunnel, underground cave structure, etc., but might not be relevant with isolated foundations for building structures. In this study, seismic pile analysis by a pseudo 3D finite element method was carried out to compare numerical results with results of the response displacement method considering 3D characteristics of a foundation-soil system which is important for the building foundation analyses. Study results show that seismic analyses results of a response displacement method are similar to those of a pseudo 3D numerical method for stiff and dense soil layers, but they are too conservative for a soft soil layer inducing large soil pressures on the foundation wall and large pile displacements due to ignored foundation rigidity and resistance.
A porous material with a surface layer was fabricated from glass abrasive sludge and expanding agents. The glass abrasive sludges were mixed with expanding agents and compacted into precursors. These precursors were sintered in the range of $700-900^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. The sintered porous materials had a surface layer with smaller pores and inner parts with larger pores. The surface layer and closed pores controlled water absorption. As the expanding agent fraction and the sintering temperature increased, the porosity and pore size increased. The porous materials with $Fe_2O_3$ and graphite as the expanding agents had a low absorption ratio of about 3% or lower while the porous material with $CaCO_3$ as the expanding agent had a higher absorption ratio and more open pores.
In this study, a new process to pattern directly on a thin metal layer using improved nano replication printing (nRP) process is suggested to evaluate the possibilities of fabricating a stamp for nano-imprinting. In the nRP process, any figure can be replicated from a bitmap figure file in the range of several micrometers with nano-scaled details. In the process, liquid-state resins are polymerized by two-photon absorption which is induced by femto-second laser. A thin gold layer was sputtered on a glass plate and then, designed patterns or figures were developed on the gold layer by newly developed top-down building approach. Generally, stamps fur nano-imprinting have been fabricated by using the costly electron-beam lithography process combined with a reactive ion-etching process. Through this study, the effectiveness of the improved nRP process is evaluated to make a stamp with the resolution of around 200nm with reduced cost.
This paper reported the temperature history of concrete placed at deck plate slab under cold climate condition by varying with surface insulating type. No curing sheet and simple insulation curing including non-woven fabric, double layer bubble sheet, the combination of double layer bubble sheet and non-woven fabric dropped temperature below zero within 24 hours, which caused frost damage at early age. On the other hand, the combination of double layer bubble sheet and non-woven fabric and double layer bubble sheet and styrofoam maintained minimum temperature above $4^{\circ}C\;and\;8^{\circ}C$, respectively. Based on core test results compressive strength of concrete with the combination of double layer bubble sheet and non-woven fabric and double layer bubble sheet and styrofoam was higher than those with other curing method due to good insulation effect.

Today's commercial high resolution satellite imagery such as that provided by IKONOS and QuickBird, offers the potential to extract useful spatial information for geographical database construction and GIS applications. Digital maps supply the most generally used GIS data probiding topography, road, and building information. Currently, the building information provided by digital maps is incompletely constructed for GIS applications due to planar position error and warped shape. We focus on extracting of the accurate building information including position, shape, and height to update the building information of the digital maps and GIS database. In this paper, we propose a new method of 3D building information extraction with a single high resolution satellite image and digital map. Co-registration between the QuickBird image and the 1:1,000 digital maps was carried out automatically using the RPC adjustment model and the building layer of the digital map was projected onto the image. The building roof boundaries were detected using the building layer from the digital map based on the satellite azimuth. The building shape could be modified using a snake algorithm. Then we measured the building height and traced the building bottom automatically using triangular vector structure (TVS) hypothesis. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we estimated accuracy of the extracted building information using LiDAR DSM.
Application of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is introduced to study wind speed and building roof pressures of flow separation region. In this study, a detailed analysis of the approach wind flow, wind-induced building pressure and the relation between the two fields was carried out using the POD technique and CWT analysis. The results show potential of the application of POD and CWT in characterization of spatio-temporal and spectral properties of the approach wind and its induced dynamic pressure events. Some of findings resulting from the application of this analysis can be summarized as follows: (1) The POD first principal coordinate of the roof pressure in the separated shear layer is closely correlated with the longitudinal component of oncoming flow. (2) The CWT analysis suggests that the extreme peak pressure in the separated shear layer is due to condensed large-scale eddy motions.
A numerical wind tunnel simulation is performed in order to predict wind loads acting on a building. The aim of the present study is to suggest a guideline for the numerical wind tunnel analysis, which could provide more detail wind load distributions compared to the wind code and expensive wind tunnel experiments. To validate the present numerical simulation, wind-induced loads on a 6 m cube model is predicted. Atmospheric boundary layer is used as a inlet boundary condition. Various effect of numerical methods are investigated such as size of computational domain, grid density, turbulence model and discretization scheme. The appropriate procedure for the numerical wind tunnel analysis is suggested through the present study.
Atmospheric boundary layer winds experience two types of effects due to friction at the ground surface. One effect is the increase of the wind speeds with height above the surface. The second effect, called the Ekman layer effect, entails veering - the change of the wind speed direction as a function of height above the surface. In this study a practical procedure is developed within a database-assisted design (DAD) framework that accounts approximately for veering effects on tall building design. The procedure was applied in a case study of a 60-story reinforced concrete building, which also considered the dependence of veering effects on the orientation of the building. Comparisons are presented between response estimates that do not account for veering, and account for veering conservatively. For the case studied in this paper veering effects were found to be small.
