As a way to assess the reliability of programs for building energy analysis, verification experiment and calculation of heating load are simultaneously conducted for a well-defined test space. Experimental conditions are carefully set to minimize uncertainties associated with radiation heating, air change, infiltration, and room-to-room interaction. Dyna- mic load calculations using TRNSYS, which are performed for two different computation domains, rely on the energy rate control that represents inherent load characteristics of a space. The predicted instantaneous heating load favorably simulates the overall behavior the measured one, though the latter fluctuates much more rapidly than the former Comparison of the accumulative load between the experiment and calculations shows a close agreement within an engineering tolerance, regardless of the computation model. It is deduced from such findings that the present experimental results along with weather information can serve as a set of reference data for validating load calculation softwares from the users'standpoint. In order to enhance the completeness of this work, a complementary study on the cooling load for the same test space is highly recommended.
Building energy simulation has become a useful tool for predicting cooling, heating and air-conditioning loads for facilities. It is important to provide building energy performances feed back to the mechanical and electrical system operator and engineer for energy conservation and maintenance of building. From this research, we set up the typical weather data of location, basic description of building, geometric modelling data and the specification of Installed primary HVAC system for establishing the simulation model about energy consuming that take place in multipurpose building complex. The simulation tool of building energy - EnergyPlus (DOE and BLAST based simulation S/W), it has been used and accomplished calculations and analyses for evaluating the effect of the system types and operating condition of central HVAC plant on the building energy consumption. In this paper, we offer comparison and simultaneous results those involve electricity consumption pattern and amount between actual operation versus EnergyPlus simulation to the object building during summer season.
The monopile-friction wheel hybrid foundation is an innovative solution for offshore structures which are mainly subjected to large lateral eccentric load induced by winds, waves, and currents during their service life. This paper presents an extensive numerical analysis to investigate the lateral load and moment bearing performances of hybrid foundation, considering various potential influencing factors in sand-overlaying-clay soil deposits, with the complex lateral loads being simplified into a resultant lateral load acting at a certain height above the mudline. Finite element models are generated and validated against experimental data where very good agreements are obtained. The failure mechanisms of hybrid foundations under lateral loading are illustrated to demonstrate the effect of the friction wheel in the hybrid system. Parametric study shows that the load bearing performances of the hybrid foundation is significantly dependent of wheel diameter, pile embedment depth, internal friction angle of sand, loading eccentricity (distance from the load application point to the ground level), and the thickness of upper sandy layer. Simplified empirical formulae is proposed based on the numerical results to predict the corresponding lateral load and moment bearing capacities of the hybrid foundation for design application.
HVAC&R systems account for more than 50% of the energy consumption of buildings. The purpose of this study is to propose an optimal design method for the HVAC&R system and to examine the possibility for the energy conservation of a selected system. The energy demand for cooling and heating is determined by using TRNSYS and HEET. By an interaction between total system efficiency and cooling-to-heating load ratio, the optimal HVAC&R systems will be decided. The results showed that this proposed method is significantly capable of determining optimal system and building design for saving energy.
Usually, a window tends to have a lower thermal performance, than that of an ordinary wall. This study analyzes the enhancement of thermal performance of a window, when a Thermal Insulation Shutter is installed. The analyses were conducted at the laboratory, and with a full-scale mockup house, and the U-factor and heating load were examined. The laboratory results show that the U-factor increased by approximately 28%, when a Thermal Insulation Shutter was installed. The temperature difference was about $5^{\circ}C$, and this shows that the Thermal Insulation Shutter enhances the thermal performance of the window, when installed. The mockup house was used to calculate the heating load; the heating load was reduced by more than 41%, and shows that the installation of a Thermal Insulation Shutter is an effective way to reduce heating energy consumption.
The field-surveyed and measured energy consumption data is processed to develop building energy demand models for heating, hot water, cooling, and electricity. The load models are systematically organized as a database and hourly loads for a span of year (8760 hours) are generated by the program. Rased on those models a Microsoft Access application program is developed to calculate energy demands for a Community Energy System (CES) composed of 17 types of buildings. User-friendly interfaces are provided to assist non-expert end users and necessary tools to link the calculation results to subsequent coagulations such as operation simulation or economic assessment.
In this paper, we investigate a group building based power consumption scheduling to minimize the electricity cost. We consider the demand shift to reduce the peak load and suggest the compensation function reflecting the relationship between the change of the building demand and the occupants' comfort. Using that, the electricity cost minimization problem satisfied the convexity is formulated, and the optimal power consumption scheduling algorithm is proposed based on the iterative method. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm achieves the group management gain compared to the individual building operation by increasing the degree of freedom for the operation.
Building energy consumption according to the ventilation has been considered to be an important subject. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling and heating loads in a test space with a forced ventilating system. In the test space, on/off controlled air-conditioning and forced ventilating facility were operated between 8 : 30 to 21 : 00 during 4 days and some important data like temperatures and energy consumption were measured to obtain actual thermal loads. The simulation was carried out in a mode of temperature level control using a TRNSYS 15.3 with a precisely measured air change amount and performance data of air-conditioner. Heating load and cooling load including sensible and latent were compared between by experiment and by simulation. Both of thermal loads associated with ventilation show a close agreement within an engineering tolerance.
This study conducted a survey and field investigation on the application of the Public Obligation System for new & renewable energy in public buildings, as well as energy consumption of each building according to their uses. The findings are as follows: (1) Since the introduction of the Public Obligation System (until June 30, 2011), there was average 1.4 new & renewable energy facilities established at 1,433 places. Preference for solar energy facilities was the highest at 57.8%. (2) The revised act sets the obligatory supply percentage of new & renewable energy for each public building: it is 9.0% for a tax office, 4.2% for a dong office, 8.2% for a public health center, and 12.6% for a fire station. All the public buildings except for fire stations failed to meet 10% expected energy consumption, a revised standard. (3) Energy consumption of each public building was 120.6TOE for a tax office, 124.3TOE for a dong office, 166.4TOE for a public health center, and 174.6TOE for a fire station. The energy consumption was comprised of 80% electric power, 18% urban gas, and 1% oil. (4) Electric power consumption per person in the room was high at a dong office, and fuel consumption per person in the room was high at a public health center. In addition, electric power consumption per unit space was high at a public health center, and fuel consumption per unit space was high at a fire station. (5) In all the four public buildings, power load had the highest basic unit percentage at average 55%, being followed by heating load (21.2%), cooling load (15%), and water heating load (7%). A tax office and fire station had 2% load due to cooking facilities.
Increased density of racks has resulted in increased use of data center cooling energy and the needs for energy efficient cooling systems has increased. In response to these needs, ASHRAE presented a performance indicator, which is Mechanical Load Component (MLC), for the purpose of evaluating systems at the design stage. However, the MLC metrics presented in the current standard can only be determined for system compliance and compared alternative systems with the system configuration completed. Therefore, there are limitations to considering MLC from the early stages of design. In this study, to extend the scope of application of MLC in the design phase, the design factors of the main equipment comprising the cooling system are classified by the MLC load component and interrelations between design factors were identified.
