MAC(Medium Access Control) is demanded to provide end-to-end QoS(Quality of Service) for a variety of traffic in the wireless networks. When all the traffic is integrated in the channel, the main difficulty of the MAC protocol is how to efficiently support multi-class traffic in the limited bandwidth wireless channel. In this paper, we proposed the dynamic bandwidth slot method for improving QoS of the real time traffics. In this paper, we used in-band scheme to send dynamic parameter and considering buffer size and delay variation, we enabled 2 state bits to send to base station in mobile station. The proposed algorithm is to guarantee QoS of real time traffic and maximize transfer efficiency in wireless networks.

In this paper, we propose an effective memory reduction algorithm to reduce the amount of reference frame buffer and memory bandwidth in video encoder and decoder. In general video codecs, decoded previous frames should be stored and referred to reduce temporal redundancy. Recently, reference frames are recompressed for memory efficiency and bandwidth reduction between a main processor and external memory. However, these algorithms could hurt coding efficiency. Several algorithms have been proposed to reduce the amount of reference memory with minimum quality degradation. They still suffer from quality degradation with fixed-bit allocation. In this paper, we propose an adaptive block-based min-max quantization that considers local characteristics of image. In the proposed algorithm, basic process unit is $8{\times}8$ for memory alignment and apply an adaptive quantization to each $4{\times}4$ block for minimizing quality degradation. We found that the proposed algorithm can obtain around 1.7% BD-bitrate gain and 0.03dB BD-PSNR gain, compared with the conventional fixed-bit min-max algorithm with 37.5% memory saving.

The MPEG-2 Test Model 5 (TM5) algorithm is widely used for bit rate control. In TM5, however, the target number of bits and the number of actual coding bits for each picture do not match well. Therefore, buffer overflow and picture quality degradation may occur at the end of the GOP. In this paper, we propose a new bit rate control algorithm for matching the target and the actual coding bits based on accurate bit allocation. The key idea of the proposed algorithm is to determine quantization Parameters which enable us to generate the number of actual coding bits close to the target number of bits for each picture, while maintaining uniform picture quality and supporting real-time processing. The proposed algorithm exploits the relationship between the number of actual coding bits and the number of estimated bits of the previous macroblock.

This paper proposes a wear-leveling algorithm that exploits the properties of SSD memories with multi-channel and multi-way architecture. When a write request arrives, the proposed algorithm classifies the stored data in DRAM buffer into hot or cold according to logical address access frequency, and performs data allocation to reduce deviation of block erase counts. It lowers the chance of increasing erase count by allocating cold data to blocks which have high erase count. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by executing various applications on a multi-channel, multi-way SSD simulator. Experimental results show that differences in erase count among blocks is reduced by an average of 9.3%, and total erase count decreases by 4.6%, when compared to previous wear-leveling algorithm.

This paper describes a new bit allocation algorithm that can achieve a constant bit rate when coding multiple video objects, while improving rate-distortion (R-D) performance over the VM5 method for MPEG-4 object-based video coding. In particular, we propose two models to estimate the rate-distortion characteristics of coded objects as well as skipped objects. Based on the proposed models, we present several R-D coding modes with spatio-temporal trade-offs to improve coding efficiency. The proposed algorithm is performed at the object level for object-based video coding. Simulation results demonstrate moderate improvement at low as well as high bit rates. The proposed algorithm can produce the actual coded bits very close to the target bits over a wide range of bit rates. Consequently, the proposed algerian has not experienced any buffer overflow or underflow over the bit rates between 32 kbps and 256 kbps.

An Ethernet PON(Passive Optical Network) is an economical and efficient access network that has received significant research attention in recent years. A MAC(Media Access Control) protocol of PON , the next generation access network, is based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) basically and can classify this protocol into a fixed length slot assignment method suitable for leased line supporting QoS(Quality of Service) and a variable length slot assignment method suitable for LAN/MAN with the best effort. For analyzing the performance of these protocols, we design an Ethernet PON model using OPNET tool. To establish the maximum efficiency of a network, we verify a MAC protocol and determine the optimal number of ONUs(Optical Network Unit) that can be accepted by one OLT(Optical Line Terminal) and propose the suitable buffer size of ONU based on analyzing the end-to-end Ethernet delay, queuing delay, throughput, and utilization.
In this work, a new rate control algorithm for transmission of H.264/AVC video bit stream through CBR(constant bit rate) channel is proposed. The proposed algorithm predicts target bit rate and MAD(mean of absolute difference) for current frame considering image complexity variance between neighboring backward and current images. In details, respective linear regression analysis for MAD and encoded bit rate against image complexity variance produce correlation parameters. Additionally, it uses frame skip technique to maintain bit stream within a manageable range and protect buffer from overflow or underflow. Implementation and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can provide accurate bit allocation, and can effectively visual degradation after scene changes. Also our proposed algorithm encodes the video sequences with less frame skipping compared to the existing rate control for H.264/AVC.
This paper applies an active period based bottleneck detection method to flow shop manufacturing system with limited buffer size. Manufacturing systems are constrained by one or more bottlenecks which degrades the system throughput. Conventional bottleneck detection methods include the waiting time or queue length of production stations and their utilization. Due to the random events such as production time of items, machine failure and repair times, the systems may change over time, and subsequently bottlenecks shift from one station to another station. Active period of working station may cause other stations to wait for productions. Information when and where active periods occur helps to find bottlenecks in production systems. Based on these informations, we predict bottlenecks in applying AweSim simulation language. We compare the simulation results of conventional methods with those obtained from duration of active period method, and duration ratio method of both sole and shift bottleneck periods. Even though simulation results are from simple flow shop model, they are quite promising for predicting bottlenecks of production stations. We hope this study aids in decision making regarding the improving system production yield and allocation of available resources of system.
In digital broadcasting, services such as digital satellite TV, cable TV and digital terrestrial TV, several video programs are compressed by MPEG-2, and then simultaneously transmitted over a conventional CBR (Constant Bit Rate) broadcasting channel. In this paper, we propose a joint quality control scheme to be able to accurately control the relative picture quality among the video programs, which is achieved by simdt;,nL'Ously controlling the video encoders to generate the VBR (Variable Bit Rate) compressed video streams. Our quality control scheme can prevent the video buffer overflow and underflow by total target bit allocation process, and also exactly control the relative picture quality in terms of PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) between some programs requiring higher picture quality and others by rate-distortion modification. Furthermore we present a rate-distortion estimation method for MPEG-2 video, which is base of our joint quality control, and verify its performance by experiments. The most attractive features of this estimation method are as follows: 1) computational complexity is low because main operation for the estimation is to calculate the histogram of OCT coefficients into quantizer; 2) estimation results are very accurate enough to be applied to the practical MPEG-2 video coding applications. Simulation results show that the proposed joint quality control scheme accurately controls the relative picture quality among the video progran1s transmitted over a single channel as well as provides more consistent and higher picture quality than independent coding scheme that encodes each program independently.
The delivery of multimedia that efficiently adapts its bit-rate to changing network characteristics and conditions is one of the important challenging tasks in the design of today's real-time multimedia streaming systems such as IPTV, Mobile IPTV and so on. In these work, the primary focus is on network congestion, to improve network stability and inter-protocol fairness. However, these existing works have problems which do not support QoE (Quality of Experience), because they did not consider essential characteristics of contents playback such as the media continuity. In this paper, we propose a novel rate control scheme for improving the QoE of multimedia streaming service in the Internet congestion, called NCAR (Network and Client-Aware Rate control), which is based on network-aware congestion control and client-aware flow control scheme. Network-aware congestion control of the NCAR offers an improving reliability and fairness of multimedia streaming, and reduces the rate oscillation as well as keeping high link utilization. Client-aware flow control of NCAR offers a removing the media discontinuity and a suitable receiver buffer allocation, and provides a good combination of low playback delay. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.
