  • The purpose of this paper is to study the buckling characteristics of elliptical latticed domes under conservative loading conditions. The latticed domes are usually designed in geometrically spherical shape. For this type of latticed domes, many researchers have researched and even the simplified estimation codes for the buckling load level have been available. However, geometrically elliptical latticed domes have been often constructed, and show different buckling characteristics following with geometrical parameters as rise-to-span ratio and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the general tendency of buckling characteristics of the elliptical latticed domes. In this paper, to find out some buckling characteristics of elliptical latticed domes, height, boundary configuration and gap are used as the shape coefficients. For each model with different parameters, the eigen values and the buckling loads are evaluated.

  • The construction of vinyl greenhouses are increasing because of economic feasibility, construction period, and construction regulations. However, the vinyl greenhouses are apt to collapse by snow load since they have a small member as a temporary structure. The 3 types of buckling such as global, member and nodal buckling could be occurred to arched structures according to characteristics of cross section. To examine the member buckling, the precision of analysis need to be enhanced. In that case, we can examine the characteristics of the those buckling. The purposes of this study are to verify buckling characteristics of structures using the method of high precision analysis with a center node of member. The results of high precision analysis bring member buckling, and in the analysis method having the center node of member, the value of strength is getting lower than a previous study.

  • This paper aims at comparing and analyzing shear buckling characteristics between sinusoidal corrugation shape and trapezoidal one. For this, I adopted the equal-length trapezoidal corrugation and sinusoidal one for the analytical models, and analyzed their shear buckling characteristics through linear buckling analysis and on its theory. Generally, the shear buckling shapes of corrugated steel plates are classified into local buckling, global buckling, and interactive buckling from the two buckling modes. Sinusoidal corrugation shape, unlike trapezoidal corrugation, does not have flat sides, which causes another tendency in shear buckling mode. Especially, the changes and different aspects of shear buckling on the boundary between local buckling and global buckling appear in different corrugation shapes. According to the analysis results, interactive buckling mode appeared on the boundary of local buckling and global bucking in trapezoidal corrugation. However, in the case of corrugated steel plates with sinusoidal configuration, interactive buckling mode appeared in the part where global bucking takes place. Besides, trapezoidal shapes are of advantages on shear buckling resistance in the local buckling section, and so are sinusoidal shapes in the global buckling section.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the buckling characteristics of a conceptually designed KALIMER-150(Korea Advanced LIquid MEtal Reactor, 150MWe) reactor vessel and verify the buckling behavior using the reduced scale cylindrical shell structures. To do this, nonlinear buckling analyses using finite element method and evaluation formulae are carried out. From the results, the KALIMER-150 reactor vessel exhibits a dominant bending buckling mode and is significantly affected by the plastic behavior. The interaction effects with the vertical seismic load cause the lateral buckling load to be slightly decrease. From the results of the buckling experiments using reduced scaled cylindrical shell structures, it is verified that the buckling modes such as pure bending, pure shear, and mixed(bending plus shear) mode clearly appear under a lateral load corresponding to the slenderness ratio of cylinder.

  • The circular hollow section is usually used for member of main frame to carry the external load in single layer lattice dome. But, the H-shaped section may be used for member of main frame since it is convenient for attaching roof panels. Single layer lattice domes have various buckling characteristics, such as the overall buckling, the member buckling, and nodal buckling. The purpose of this study is to compare buckling characteristics of single-layer lattice domes in which the H-shaped steel section as the existing domestically-produced structural steel is used as main frames to those of domes in which a circular hollow section is used as main frames.

  • Skin-stringer structures are widely used in aircrafts due to their advantage of minimizing structural weight while maintaining load carrying capacity. However, buckling load can cause serious damage to these structures. Therefore, the buckling characteristics of skin-stringer structures should be carefully considered during the design phase to ensure structural soundness. In this study, finite element method was applied to predict the buckling characteristics of stiffened panels. In terms of the failure mode, finite element analysis showed a symmetrical buckling mode, whereas an asymmetrical mode was determined by experimentation. The numerical results were obtained and compared to the experimental data, showing a difference of 9.3% with regard to the buckling loads.

  • Corrugated steel plates are made by fabricating thin steel plates to have trapezoidal or sinusoidal corrugation, and the corrugated plates are able to maintain high out-of-plane rigidity even when they are used instead of thick flat plates. Also, corrugated steel plates have almost no axial rigidity due to the accordion effect. Thus, if they are applied to the webs of plate girders, designing can be easily conducted so that the webs bear only shear stresses. However, unlike flat plates, the shear buckling of corrugated steel plates has very complex characteristics where buckling occurs due to the interaction of local and global buckling, besides local buckling and global buckling. For the investigation of the cause and characteristics of this interactive buckling, studies on sinusoidal corrugated steel plates are fewer than studies on trapezoidal corrugated steel plates. Therefore, in this study, the shear buckling characteristics of sinusoidal corrugated steel plates and the occurrence pattern of interactive buckling were investigated. For the calculation of shear buckling strength, a finite element program was used, and the analysis results were compared with the exact solution. In addition, the characteristics of buckling stress change and the change of buckling mode shape depending on corrugation thickness and shape parameter were analyzed, and by comparing these results with the results of a theoretical equation, the timing of buckling mode change was analyzed.

  • The buckling characteristics of I - shaped columns which are composed of thin web and equal upper/lower flange plates are generally classified into the local and global modes. In this paper, its local buckling problem has been formulated on the basis of the assumed buckling modes using the finite element method for beams and plates. The effects of local bucklings are studied for various size rations and end conditions of I-shaped columns. The calculated results are comparatively well consistent with values obtained from the existing studies. The global buckling characteristics calculated by the present method are in good agreement with the classical rigid web solution

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the connector having an influence on the elasto-plastic buckling load of ball-jointed single layer latticed domes. As an analytic model, domes are composed of tubular member elements, balls and connectors. The joint system of members in single layer latticed domes has influence on the buckling load. Therefore, in this paper, the variation of the elasto-plastic buckling load by effects of the connectors characteristics is analyzed. The structural behavior of the connector is investigated by following points: (1) the length of rigid zone, (2) looseness of screw and (3) the diameter of connector. In addition, the elasto-plastic buckling analysis is carried out through the variation of the connectors section of yielding part, and then the buckling mode of the dome is examined. As a result, it is emphasized that the characteristics of the connector have significant effects on the buckling load of latticed domes.

  • Recently, the equipments of the structure are increasing remarkably. It is very important to evaluate the stability of the domes under concentrated loading such as a large-scale illuminating, visional, and sound equipment. The paper is aimed at investigating the buckling characteristics of single-layer latticed domes with triangular network under the uniformly distributed vertical-loading and the partially concentrated equipment-loading. The results show that the effects of the equipment-loading on the buckling strength is much more sensitive in domes of overall buckling than in domes of member buckling.
