  • In this study, the slip behavior of high-tension bolted joints subjected to compression force is investigated through 3D finite element analysis and experiments. The relation with sliding load, bolt deformation, and failure load are studied with the metal thickness affecting the bolted joint. The post-sliding behavior considering bolt stiffness is presented and compared with the results by finite element and experiments. The finite element model is constructed by solid elements in ABAQUS, in consideration of all the friction effects between metal plates and bolts. The stress-strain relations in the literature are used, and the sliding displacements and axial stresses around the bolt connection are investigated. The flexural buckling of species happened when the plate thickness is less than the bolt diameter. However, the shear failures of bolt occurred in the opposite case.

  • A study for the structural strength evaluation on the doubler plate subjected to the biaxial in-plane compression has been performed through the systematic evaluation process. In order to estimate the proper static strength of doubler plate, elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is introduced including the contact effect between main plate and doubler. The characteristics of stiffness and strength variation are discussed based on their results. A1so, in order to compare the doubler structure with the original strength of main plate without doubler, a simple formula for the evaluation of the equivalent flat plate thickness is derived based on the additional series analysis of flat plate structure. Using this derived equation, the thickness change of a equivalent flat plate is analyzed according to the variation of various design parameters of doubler plate and some design guides are suggested in order to maintain the original strength of main plate without doubler reinforcement. Finally, correlation between derived equivalent flat plate formula and the developed buckling strength formulas by author et a1. is discovered and these relations are formulated for the future development of simple strength evaluation formula of doubler plate structure.

  • This work concerns with a comparison of the 1-dimensional (or 1-D) load follow analysis method with reference to the detailed 3-dimensional (or 3-D) computations. For this purpose a 1-D two-group finite difference code, HLOFO, and a 3-D coarse-mesh code based on the modified Borresen's method, CMSNAC, are developed. The CMSNAC code is used to obtain the 3-D power peaks and reactivity parameters in response to power swing from 100 to 50 and back to 100% in the 12-3-6-3 load cycle for the BOL of the KORI Unit 1 PWR core. The 3-D result is then compared with the 1-D HLOFO computations, the cross section and buckling inputs of which are obtained by combining the flux-volume weighting scheme with the approximate flux from the auxiliary 3-D computations. It is shown that the 1-D computation has a limited accuracy, yet it is confirmed that it can describe the core axial average behavior which is fairly consistent with the detailed 3-D computation.

  • In this study, the NREL 5 MW wind turbine tower model was optimized according to the multi-body dynamics and reliability-based design. The mathematical model was defined as a link-joint system including dynamic characteristics derived from Timoshenko's beam theory. For the optimization problem, the sensitivities to variations in the tower thicknesses and inner and outer diameters were acquired and arranged in terms of safety and efficiency according to bending stress and buckling standards. An optimal design was calculated with the advanced first-order second moment method and used to define a finite element model for validation. The finite element model was simulated by static analysis. The relationship between the multi-body dynamic and finite element method throughout the process was investigated, and the optimal model, which had high endurance despite its low mass, was determined.

  • In this paper, 18 square CFT columns filled with high-strength concrete were tested under concentric or eccentric axial loading. Two parameters of the experimental program included the buckling length-section depth ratio ($L_K$/D) and the eccentricity of the appled compressive load (e). In additon, mechanical properties such as the compressive concrete strength and compressive and tensile steel strength were measured and incorporated into the material models for the stress-strain relationships of concrete and steel. This model was used in an elasto-plastic analysis in order to predict the behavior of the slender CFT columns. Observtions of the failure mode during the tests under axial loadig were also presented. The strengths obtained from the analysis. Recommendations for Design, and Constructions of CFT structures were presented, as verified by the experimental results.

  • Unlike the structure which has a homogeneous material property, a composite structure is coupled with materials which have different properties, namely, steel and concrete. At actual modeling, the real behavior cannot be predicted without consideration of those material characteristics. Therefore, by putting the interface element between concrete and steel, a slip of steel and concrete is made predictable. Interface element can be used properly not by an ordinary constitutive relation, but by a non-linear constitutive relation considering actual adhesion and slip. A contact surface between plate-shape steel box and concrete is described by using this interface element. Furthermore, because the general 8 node conforming element is inappropriate for describing a bending buckling behavior of steel box, the EAS(Enhanced Assumed Strain) solid-shell element is used to describe a bending behavior of plate-shape steel box.

  • This paper studied the AE(acoustic emission) characteristics of the laminated composite structures. The composite stiffened panels under the compressive loading emitted various AE signals when they buckled or changed the buckling modes. In addition, the failure initiated and propagation generated a lot of complex signals. From the continuous signal generation. we identified when the failures initiated and whether they propagated or not. The single lap joint of laminated plates under tensional load also generated AE signals when bonding region failed. The first failure occurrence and its propagation are monitored by generated AE signals. The characteristics of AE signals used in this analysis are cumulative hits, hit distribution, peak frequency of generated AE waveform and amplitude of signals. The analysis of AE signals shows that continuous increment of cumulative hits can be regarded as damage propagation and three dominant peak frequencies can correspond to typical failure modes in the laminated composites.

  • We simulated large deformation and inelastic behavior of API-X80 steel linepipes using nonlinear finite element method. Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman(GTN) model is employed for the development of the constitutive model of the steel. The GTN model is implemented in the form of the user-supplied material subroutine(UMAT) for the commercial software of ABAQUS. To calibrate the model parameters, we simulated the behavior of the uniaxial tension test using ABAQUS equipped with the developed GTN model. Using the set of the model parameters, we were able to capture the characteristics of the plastic buckling of API-X80 steel linepipes.

  • The reduced beam section (RBS) steel moment connection has performed well in past numerous tests. However there still remain several design issues that should be further examined. One such issue on RBS connection performance is the panel zone strength. Although a significant amount of test data are available, a specific recommendation for a desirable range of panel zone strength versus beam strength has yet to be proposed. In this paper, the effects of panel zone strength on the cyclic performance of RBS connection are investigated based on the available test database from comprehensive independent testing programs. A criterion for a balanced panel zone strength that assures sufficient plastic rotation capacity while reducing the amount of beam buckling is proposed. Numerical studies to supplement the test results are then presented based on the validated finite element analysis. Satisfactory numerical simulation achieved in this study also indicates that numerical analysis based on quality finite element modeling can supplement or replace, at least in part, the costly full-scale cyclic testing of steel moment connections.

  • Crush energy characteristics of graphite/epoxy square tubes are experimentally studied. Effect of the ply orientation on the peak load and the average load is investigated by applying compressive load on the top of the composite square tubes under the stroke control with crosshead speed of 0.003mm/sec and 0.3mm/sec. in addition to the experimental survey, the finite element analysis is used to estimate the peak load of the composite square tubes with [0/90]₄ and [0/±45/90]₂. The first buckling mode of the tube is superimposed to the perfect geometry and the distributed compressive load is applied on the top of the tubes. The applied compressive load that make Tsai-Wu criteria equal to one is regarded as the peak load of the tubes. The experimental data shows that the square tube with [45/-45]₄ has the highest peak load and the square tube with [60/-60]₄ has the average sustained load. The measure peak load of the composite tubes with [0/90]₄ and [0/±45/90]₂agree well with the estimated peak load using the finite element analysis.
