  • The objective of this study is to design a fuzzy logic controller(FLC) which controls the position of excavator's attachment a noble FLC is proposed, which is based on simple control rules while offering easy tuning of control parameters by utilizing real operation characteristics of an operator. The proposed FLC consists of two parts, the proportional controller part and the FLC part. Experiments are carried out on a test bed which is built around a commercial excavator. The controller is applied to bhe leveling of excavator's bucket tip, which is one of the main functions in an excavator's operation.

  • Hydraulic excavator is one of the most widely used heavy machines in construction sites including dismantling. In the dismantling sites, the excavators equipped with crusher or breaker carry out dangerous operations, so drivers are always exposed to unexpected danger. For safety operation, remote control of the hydraulic excavator has been studied using proportional control valve, which requires an appropriate motion control of its bucket tip. In this case, kinematics and dynamics analysis have to be preceded through modeling of excavator. However, it is difficult to acquire reasonable results from the analysis due to insufficient information of physical parameters such as mass of each links and locations of mass centers, etc. This study deals with the trajectory control of bucket tip, which is based on experimental estimation of cylinder output force. The estimated forces are fed into the control of each cylinder in order to compensate gravitational and frictional effects in the cylinders. The control was applied to horizontal trajectories that are for flattening work.

Analysis of Major Error Factors in Coherent Beam Combination: Phase, Tip Tilt, Polarization Angle, and Beam Quality

  • The major error factors that degrade the efficiency of coherent beam combining (CBC) are numerically studied in a comprehensive manner, paying particular attention to phase, tip-tilt, polarization angle, and beam quality. The power in the bucket (PIB), normalized to the zero-error PIB, is used as a figure of merit to quantify the effect of each error factor. To maintain a normalized PIB greater than or equal to 95% in a 3-channel CBC configuration, the errors in phase, tip-tilt, and polarization angle should be less than 1.06 radians, 1.25 ㎛, and 1.06 radians respectively, when each of the three parameters is calculated independently with the other two set to zero. In a worst-case scenario of the composite errors within the parameter range for the independent-95%-normalized-PIB condition, the aggregate effect would reduce the normalized PIB to 83.8%. It is noteworthy that the PIB performances of a CBC system, depending on phase and polarization-angle errors, share the same characteristic feature. A statistical approach for each error factor is also introduced, to assess a CBC system with an extended number of channels. The impact of the laser's beam-quality factor M2 on the combining efficiency is also analyzed, based on a super-Gaussian beam. When M2 increases from 1 to 1.3, the normalized PIB is reduced by 2.6%, 11.8%, 12.8%, and 13.2% for a single-channel configuration and 3-, 7-, and 19-channel CBC configurations respectively. This comprehensive numerical study is expected to pave the way for advances in the evaluation and design of multichannel CBC systems and other related applications.

An experimental investigation into cavitation behaviour and pressure characteristics of alternative blade sections for propellers

  • During the final quarter of the last century considerable efforts have been spent to reduce the hull pressure fluctuations caused by unsteady propeller cavitation. This has resulted in further changes in propeller design characteristics including increased skew, tip unloading and introduction of "New Blade Sections" (NBS) designed on the basis of the so-called Eppler code. An experimental study was carried out to investigate flow characteristics of alternative two-dimensional (2-D) blade sections of rectangular planform, one of which was the New Blade Section (NBS) developed in Newcastle University and other was based on the well-known National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) section. The experiments comprised the cavitation observations and the measurements of the local velocity distribution around the blade sections by using a 2-D Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) system. Analysis of the cavitation tests demonstrated that the two blade sections presented very similar bucket shapes with virtually no width at the bottom but relatively favourable buckets arms at the suction and pressure sides for the NACA section. Similarly, pressure analysis of the sections displayed a slightly larger value for the NBS pressure peak. The comparative overall pressure distributions around the sections suggested that the NBS might be more susceptible to cavitation than the NACA section. This can be closely related to the fundamental shape of the NBS with very fine leading edge. Therefore a further investigation into the modification of the leading edge should be considered to improve the cavitation behaviour of the NBS.
