  • Experiments of vertically upward steam-water two-phase flow have been carried out in single-side heated narrow rectangular channel with a gap of 3 mm. Flow patterns were identified and classified through visualization directly. Slug flow was only observed at 0.2 MPa but replaced by block-bubble flow at 1.0 MPa. Flow pattern maps at the pressure of 0.2 MPa and 1.0 MPa were plotted and the difference was analyzed. The experimental data has been compared with other flow pattern maps and transition criteria. The results show reasonable agreement with Hosler's, while a wide discrepancy is observed when compared with air-water two-phase experimental data. Current criteria developed based on air-water experiments poorly predict bubble-slug flow transition due to the different formation and growth of bubbles. This work is significant for researches on heat transfer, bubble dynamics and flow instability.

  • Single crystals of TeO2 with large diameter were grown by Czochralski technique with auto-diameter control system. The ratio of crystal to crucible was 60-70%. The effect of critical pulling and rotation rate on the crystal quality was studied. Optimum growth parameters for high quality crystal pulling rate was less than 1.2 mm/hr. The solid-liquid interface was convex at the rotation rate of 10-23 rpm and concave at the rotation rate of more than 25 rpm, depending on the size of crystal and crucible. The platinum concentration in the melts is one of the main factors of the constitutional supercooling and thus the bubble entrapment in the growing crystal. Growth axis was confirmed to {110} direction during the whole growth procedure. Infrared spectrometric study and dislocation density measurment by chemical etching method on the grown crystal were performed. Finally, the reasons of cooperation of striations, inclusions, and optical inhomogeneities were discussed.

  • High purity SiC fine powder with metal impurity contents of less than 1 ppm was synthesized by improved carbothermal reduction process, and the synthesized powder was used for SiC single crystal growth in RF heating PVT device at temperature above 2,100℃. In-situ x-ray image analyzer was used to observe the sublimation of the powder and single crystal growth behavior during the growth process. SiC powder was used as a source of single crystal growth, exhausted from the outside of the graphite crucible at the growth temperature and left graphite residues. During the growth, the flow of raw materials was concentrated in the middle and influenced the growth behavior of SiC single crystals. This is due to the difference in temperature distribution inside the crucible due to the fine powder. After the single crystal growth was completed, the single crystal ingot was cut into a 1 mm thick single crystal substrate and finely polished using a diamond abrasive slurry. A dark yellow 4H-SiC was observed overall of single crystal substrate, and the polycrystals generated in the outer part may be caused by the incorporation of impurities such as the bubble layer mixed in the process of attaching the seed crystal to the seed holder.

  • High-quality $Er^{3+}$ doped Mg : $LiNbO_3$single crystal fibers were grown by a micro-pulling down ($\mu$-PD) method. Single crystal fibers were pulled down through the nozzle, at a pulling down rate of 0.5 mm/min and using a Pt crucible with a nozzle 1 mm in diameter in air atmosphere. Defects such as bubbles, cracks and inclusions were not detected in any of the grown crystals. The optical transmission of Er : Mg : $LiNbO_3$crystal was measured and the energy levels of $Er_2O_3$ ion could be calculated. The photoluminescence spectrum of crystal fibers showed an energy band emission with the strongest line corresponding to the $^4I_{3/2}{\to}^4I_{15/2}$transition. The concentration dependence of the entire wavelength region emission intensity upon excitation intensity measured emission intensity for the 3 mol% MgO doped fibers was larger than that for the 1, 5 mol% MgO doped fibers.

  • The two different ways to supply air inside the bioreactor were examined in the adventitious root cultures of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. First, the aeration rate varied at 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 vvm, respectively which were supplied during the whole culture period. Second, the amount of air supply was increased from 0.05 to 0.3 vvm at 10-day intervals in proportion to the root growth. Both the root growth and the ginsenoside accumulation were maximized to 175.8 g dry wt. of root growth and 4.3 mg/g dry wt. of ginsenoside accumulation when the aeration rate was increased gradually. The effect of the sparger pore size (15, 30 and $60\;{\mu}m$) in the bioreactor was also investigated, which suggested the greatest root growth (175.9 g dry wt.) in the $15{\mu}m$-sized sparger and the highest ginsenoside content (4.3 mg/g dry wt.) in the $60\;{\mu}m$ size. Finally, the diameter of a sparger ($15\;{\mu}m$-sized) varied at 1.5, 3.0, 5.0 and 8.0 cm, respectively. The highest root growth (191.9 g dry wt.) and the ginsenoside content (4.9 mg/g dry wt.) were obtained in the sparger diameter of 8.0 cm.

  • 'Venture firms' in Korea are the firms who are certified as 'venture', whose certification types are defined by a law ('Special Law for the Support of Venture Firms'), and therefore encompass not only the venture capital-financed companies, which are usually regarded as ventures in USA and European countries, but also other types of firms such as R&D-intensive firms and the firms with financial guarantee or loans through technology evaluation ('technology finance or loan firms'). This paper examines the differences in the Korean venture firms' growth between the venture certification types. For the empirical analysis, this paper uses the lists of venture-certified firms from 1998 to 2010 which are then linked with their financial data in Korea Enterprises Database (KED). According to the results of empirical analyses, the companies in the 'venture capital-financed firms' type show greater growth rate in sales and the number of regular employees 3 and 5 years after first venture certification than the firms in type of 'technology finance/loan firms'. Moreover, the newly certified companies in 'R&D-intensive firms' type are also showing faster growth than the 'technology finance/loan firms' since 2003 where the venture industry has undergone a consolidation phase after the blast of so-called 'IT venture bubble' in 2001~2002. These results imply that the so-called 'venture firms' in Korea are composed with heterogeneous firm groups with different characteristics and that the companies selected through market mechanism ('venture capital-financed firms') outperforms the companies selected on the basis of policy interests ('technology finance/loan firms') in terms of the growth in sales and employment. On the basis of these findings, this paper suggests that the current venture-support policy should consider the different policy demands of firms across the type of venture certification more actively and that should refocus the objective of policies on facilitating venture capital market rather than emphasizing the nominal increase in the number of venture-certified firms.

  • Loess, PAC, MACF and plants were applied to the control of the phytoplankton bloom in laboratory and in field, In field experiment using oil fence, 5ppm concentration of coagulant(PAC) was observed to be effective in controlling the cyanobacterial bloom, resulting in 90% removal of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton from the water column, hi case of Synedra sp., however, only 50% of biomass decreased with the same PAC concentration. MACF(micro-air bubble coagulation and floating), a kind of physicochemical method, was applied to the column of the Kyongan stream and resulted in over 80% chlorophyll a and 73.5% TP removal, Chlorophyll a and total phosphorus were effectively removed from water body when 2.0 g/L of loess with the particle radius of 125 ${\mu}m$ was inputted. In case of experiments involving plants, big cone pine, gingko, and pine needle were observed to be effective in restraining phytoplankton bloom at 0.5g/200ml level. During a field test done at Kyungan stream, where Microcystis heavily occurred, Pine needle and big cone pine were observed to be effective on suppressing algal growth.

  • The restrictor, which is a fluid channel from a reservoir to a chamber inside a thermal micro actuator, has been fabricated using ArF and KrF excimer lasers, Diode-Pumped Solid State Lasers (DPSSL) and femtosecond lasers for a feasibility study. A numerical model of fluid dynamics for the actuator chamber and restrictor is presented. The model includes bubble formation and growth, droplet ejection through nozzle, and dynamics of fluid refill through the restrictor from a reservoir. Since an optimized and well-fabricated restrictor is important for a high frequency actuator, some special beam delivery setups and post processing techniques have been researched and developed. The effects of variations of the restrictor length, diameter, and tapered shapes are simulated and the results are analyzed to determine the optimal design. The numerical results of droplet velocity and volume are compared with the experimental results of a cylindrical-shaped actuator. It is found that the micro actuators having tapered restrictors show better high frequency characteristics than those having a cylindrical shape without any notable decrease of droplet volume. The laser-fabricated restrictors demonstrate initial feasibility for the laser direct ablation technique although more development is required.

  • In this paper, we present a detailed mechanism of drag reduction by dimples and roughness on a sphere by measuring the streamwise velocity above the dimpled and roughened surfaces, respectively. Dimples cause local flow separation and trigger the shear layer instability along the separating shear layer, resulting in generation of large turbulence intensity. With this increased turbulence, the flow reattaches to the sphere surface with high momentum near the wall and overcomes strong adverse pressure gradient formed in the rear sphere surface. As a result, dimples delay main separation and reduce drag significantly. The present study suggests that generation of a separation bubble, i.e. a closed-loop streamline consisting of separation and reattachment, on a body surface is an important flow-control strategy for drag reduction on a bluff body such as the sphere and cylinder. In the case of roughened sphere, the boundary layer flow is directly triggered by roughness and changes to a turbulent flow. Due to this change, the drag significantly decreases. As the Reynolds number further increases, transition to turbulence occurs earlier on the sphere surface. Because of faster growth of turbulent boundary layer by roughness, earlier transition thickens the boundary layer, resulting in earlier separation and drag increase with increasing Reynolds number

  • Congenital duodenal obstruction is a one of the emergent surgical conditions in neonates. Almost of them were diagnosed with double-bubble sign in prenatal ultrasonography. However, partial obstruction caused from duodenal web could be overlooked. We reported a duodenal web in early childhood. A three-year-old girl visited at our pediatric clinic for constipation. She had been showed non-bilious vomiting after weaning meal since 6 months old of her age, but her weight was relevant for 50-75 percentile of growth curve. Barium enema was initially checked, but any abnormal finding was not found. We noticed the severely distended stomach and 1st portion of duodenum. Upper gastrointestinal series revealed partial obstruction in 2nd portion of duodenum. After laparotomy, we found the transitional zone of duodenum and identified a duodenal web via duodenotomy. We performed duodeno-duodenostomy without any injury of ampulla of Vater. She was recovered uneventfully. During 6 months after operation, she does well without any gastrointestinal symptoms or signs, such as vomiting or constipation.
