Torque Ripple Reduction Method in a Sensorless Drive for the BLDC Motor

  • This paper presents a method to reduce the commutation torque ripple in a position sensorless brushless DC motor drive. To compensate the commutation torque ripple considerably, the duration of commutation must be known. The proposed method measures the duration of commutation from the terminal voltage of the motor, calculates a PWM duty ratio using the measured commutation interval to suppress the commutation torque ripple, and applies it to the calculated PWM duty ratio only during the next commutation. Experimental results show that pulsating currents and vibrations are considerably reduced when the proposed method is applied to a position sensorless brushless DC motor drive for the air-conditioner compressor.

  • A robust speed control scheme for a brushless DC(BLDC) motor using an adaptive input-output linearization technique is presented. By using this technique, the nonlinear motor model can be linearized in Brunovski canonical form, and the desired speed dynamics can be obtained based on the linearized model. This control technique, however, gives an undesirable output performance under the mismatch of the system parameters and load conditions. For the robust output response, the controller parameters will be estimated by a model reference adaptive technique where the disturbance torque and flux linkage are estimated. The adaptation laws are derived by the Popov's hyperstability theory and positivity concept. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a BLDC motor using the software of DSP TMS320C30 and the effectiveness is verified through the comparative experiments.

  • The application of Sliding Mode Control for inproving the dynamic response of a Multi-Phase-Bipolar (MPB) Brushless DC motor based position Brushless DC motor system is presented. Sliding Mode Control gives fast dynamic response with no overshoot and zero steady state error. It has the important feature of bins highly robust. A design procedure is outlined for the Sliding Mode Controller for a MPB Brushless DC motor. Digital computer simulation of the overall position control system is carried out using a time domain model in the d-q reference frame.

  • In this paper, a high performance current control strategy for a Brushless DC Motor is presented. The proposed strategy is based on the ramp comparison PI current control with the predictive voltage compensation. The proposed strategy is compared with the hysteresis current control strategy. The proposed method can improve the current waveforms, and it can reduce the torque ripples. So the proposed strategy is suitable to a high performance current control strategy for a Brushless DC Motor. The simulation and experimental results for a laboratory Brushless DC motor drive system confirm the validity of the proposed strategy.

  • Generally, brushless DC motor(BLDCM) driving system uses hall sensors or encoders as the mechanical position or speed sensors. It is necessary to achieve the informations of rotor position for driving trapezoidal type brushless DC motor without any position sensor. This paper proposes a sensorless driving system with rotor absolute position detector circuit which acquires both commutate phase and commutate time by analyzing motor phase voltages. Proposed system is applied to a 10k[W] rating motor which actually used in electrical vehicles of HONDA co.,ltd. The experimental results will show the validity of the proposed system and the practical use of proposed sensorless drive algorithm.

  • This paper describes sensorless speed control of brushless DC motors by using direct torque control. Direct torque control offers fast torque response, robust specification of parameter changes, and lower hardware and processing costs compared to vector-controlled drives. In this paper, the current error compensation method is applied to the sensorless speed control of a brushless DC motor. Through this control technique, the controlled stator voltage is applied to the brushless DC motor such that the error between the stator currents in the mathematical model and the actual motor can be forced to decay to zero as time proceeds, and therefore, the motor speed approaches the setting value. This paper discusses the composition of the controller, which can carry out robust speed control without any proportional-integral (PI) controllers. The simulation results show that the control system has good dynamic speed and load responses at wide ranges of speed.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a brushless DC motor considering an advanced $165^{\circ}$ 12 step control for a cost reduction. The advanced 12 step control that extends the conduction angle $150^{\circ}$ can improve the output of the motor. The optimal design considering the improved output power of the motor is proposed by reducing the volume of rotor, stator and permanent magnet using response surface method. The proposed design satisfied the performance requirements and efficiency improvement of the conventional motor and reduced the volume about 3.5%. The feasibility of the optimal design is proved by the electromagnetic field analysis using the finite element method.

  • Recently, high-speed centrifugal turbo-compressors have been under intensive research and development. Since, compared to conventional compressors, high-speed centrifugal compressors hive numerous qualities such as simple structure, light weight small size, and high efficiency, etc. In cope with such industrial demands, a high-speed brushless DC motor for a 50-kW, 70-krpm turbo-compressor was developed based on a 2-D analytical method, of which design was verified using the FE analysis. A prototype machine was also fabricated and tested to confirm the analytical design. Preliminarily obtained experimental data using the prototype mac]line shows the validity of the analytical approach.

  • In the paper the eddy current loss in brushless DC motor due to switching frequency supplied by PWM inverter, is analyzed. The compensated conductivity is used in order to analyze the eddy current loss in brushless DC motor which has lamination structure. The eddy current loss is deceased when switching frequency supplied by PWM inverter is gradually increased from 1.2kHz up to 12kHz. The high switching frequency of PWM inverter make the output wave into a similar sine wave and this leads to the decreasing eddy current loss.
