  • A numerical simulation of brushless DC motor is performed to elucidate thermo-flow characteristics in winding and bearing with heat generation. Rotation of rotor and blades drives influx of ambient air into the rotor inlet. Recirculation zone exists in the tiny interfaces between windings. The flow separation causes poor cooling performance in bearing part and therefore the redesign of the bearing groove is required. The design parameters such as the inlet location, geometry and bearing groove threshold angle have been selected in the present simulation. As the inlet location moves inward in the radial direction, total incoming flow rate and heat transfer rate are increased. Total incoming flow rate is increased with increasing the inlet inner length. The effect of the bearing groove threshold angle on the thermal performance is less than that of other design parameters.

  • This paper deals with the torque characteristic of AFPM Brushless DC motor, which is driven by 3 phase inverter and with the effect of phase of input voltage to the output by varying the input voltage to the induced voltage in stator of motor. To accomplish this, a prototype AFPM Brushless DC Motor was produced and phase variation was detected by a set of photo interrupter. In this realized system. method to maximize the output torque depend on the speed of motor is presented.

  • For motor operation at low speeds and loads, torque pulsation by the cogging torque is often a source of vibration and control difficulty. In this paper, the magnetic field of a motor is calculated by finite element method. The periodic cogging torque is determined using Maxwell stress method and time stepping method, and then decomposed using fourier series expansion, The purpose of this paper is to characterize design parameters on the cogging torque and to design a permanent magnet motor with a cogging torque less vulnerable to vibration, without sacrificing the motor performance. The design parameters include stator slot width, permanent magnet slot width, airgap length and magnetization direction. A new design with a less populated frequency spectrum of the cogging torque is proposed after characterizing individual effect of design parameters. Magnet pole edge shaping, by gradually increasing the cogging torque with reduced higher harmonics.

  • A new PWM technique for a two-phase BLDC motor fed by a two-phase eight-switch inverter is proposed in this paper. It is well known that a two-phase eight-switch inverter can significantly improve power output compared with a two-phase six-switch inverter in a two-phase motor drive. To drive the two-phase BLDC motor simply and effectively, two normal PWM strategies are investigated to manage speed regulation. However, under the conditions of low speed and light load, especially during the braking process, the current in a short time of one period is near zero, which is a discontinuous waveform every half period. To solve it, a novel PWM technique is investigated to improve the operational performance of normal technique. Using the new PWM scheme, the current continues every half period and the braking performance is improved. The effectiveness of the proposed PWM method is verified through the experiments.

  • The brushless DC motor (BLDCM) has many advantages. As a result, it is widely used in electric vehicle (EV) drive systems. To improve the reliability of the motor control system, a position sensorless control strategy based on a sliding mode observer (SMO) is proposed. The global fast terminal sliding mode observer (GFTSMO) is proposed to enhance the control performance of the SMO control system. The advantages of the linear sliding mode and the nonsingular terminal sliding mode (NTSM) are combined in the control strategy. The convergence speed of the system state is enhanced. The motor commutation point is obtained with the observation of the back EMF, and the instantaneous torque value of the motor is calculated. Therefore, the position sensorless control of the BLDCM is realized. Experimental results show that the proposed control strategy can improve the convergence speed, dynamic characteristics and robustness of the system.

  • Torque ripple control of brushless DC motor has long been the main issue of the servo drive systems in which the speed fluctuation, vibration and acoustic noise need to be minimized. The vast majority of the methods for suppressing the torque ripple require the Fourier series analysis and either the iterative or least mean square minimization. In this paper, a novel approach based on the d-q-0 reference frame that achieves ripple-free torque control with maximum efficiency is presented. The proposed method optimizes the reference phase current waveforms including even the case of 3-phase unbalanced condition, and the motor winding currents are controlled to track the optimized current waveforms by the delta modulation technique. As a results, the proposed approach provides a simple and yet effectine means for obtaining the optimal motor excitation currents. The validity and applicability of the proposed control scheme are verified through simulations and experimental investigations.

  • Electrical motors are an integral part of industrial plants with no less than 5 billion motors built world wide every year. The demand for low-cost brushless DC (BLDC) motors has increased in industrial applications. This paper presents a BLDC motor control algorithm for low-cost motor drive applications using general purpose microcontrollers which have only one on-chip timer. This paper describes how to realize pulse width modulation (PWM) signals with general input/output (I/O) ports to control a three-phase permanent magnet brushless DC motor using the timer interrupt on MSP430F1232.

  • In this paper, an axial type brushless DC motor which has double rotors using rare-earth magnet pieces is designed. This kind of motor has shorter axial length and is easier to assemble than the radial type motors. To get enough torque, NdFeB magnet is used and for the cost of production, the magnets are segmented to rectangle or disk shape. To design this motor, a equivalent circuit is adopted and the air-gap density is calculated using 3D finite element method to get exact parameters. The design variables are optimized with genetic algorithm. From the results of the simulations, the reference of the axial type BLDC motors can be obtained.

  • This paper presents a new current control method to reduce the torque ripple due to phase commutation, when the unipolar PWM method is applied for the phase current control of brushless DC motor. Phase commutation bring about an instantaneous change in the average voltage of conducting phase so that current undulates, and this undulating current generates torque ripple. In this paper, we analyze average voltage variations of conducting phase in commutation period with PWM pattern and design current controller to compensate average variations. In addition, we prove the validity of proposed method by experimental results.

  • In this paper, the effect of permanent magnet overhang structure on the characteristics in Brushless DC motor has analyzed quantitatively. We classified the overhang structure as symmetric and asymmetric. 3D equivalent magnetic circuit network (EMCN) method which uses the permeance as the distributive variable is used for the efficient analysis of magnetic field. The overhang effect which increases the linkage flux at the stator is verified by comparison between overhang and no overhang structure. In addition, it is known that no load back electro motive force (EMF) is also increased due to the overhang effect. In case of asymmetric overhang structure, the ratio effect of the upper to lower overhang length on the magnetic forces is analyzed. Form the analysis results, the variation of the asymmetric overhang ratio has a significant effect on the axial magnetic force except the radial and tangential magnetic forces. The validity of the analysis results is also clarified by comparison between calculated results and measured ones such as back EMF and cogging torque.
