  • This paper describes the system and network configurations of the Application Development Center for multimedia applications on Korean broadband testbed network. The center is primarily used for developing networked multimedia services funded by the Korean Ministry of Information and Communications. The center is quipped with ATM switch, multimedia workstations and PCs. More than 180 applications for the broadband testbed network are under development. Several examples will be presented in detail.

  • The growing availability of broadband multimedia applications are providing strict real-time services and enabling users to feel much interactivity as well as 'sense of presence'. In that sense, there would be increased demand for what network and system have to do to fulfill the user expectations. In this paper, we implement a real-time multimedia application which make use of real-time DXT CODEC and investigate what the challenges of networking and system are. We carry out various experiments over a research network test-bed to evaluate the performance of our proposals.

  • Recent advances in optical-network technologies have led to the advent of broadband networks reaching 10 Gbps. The increase of available network bandwidth envisions wide-spread use of broadband applications such as uncompressed Internet HDTV, which would be a cutting-edge application for networked collaborations. Despite of breakthroughs in high-performance systems and networks, expensiveness blocks wide-range deployments of uncompressed Internet HDTV systems. In this paper, we propose a low-cost uncompressed Internet HDTV system and discuss its software architecture in depth. We conducted several network-based experiments utilizing a research network test-bed to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.

  • Guaranteeing network bandwidth and system performance becomes important technical matters to make seamless delivery of bulky data at high speed. Tuning system and network parameters including jumbo frame, kernel buffer size, and interrupt coalescence determines end-to-end transmission throughput. Additionally, fine-tuning of the parameters alleviates workload on high-end systems. Until now, many studies have concentrated on how to increase transmission throughput but rarely discussed how to mitigate system workload. In this paper, we have investigated various tuning parameters, which positively affect networking and processing performance of uncompressed HDTV system.
