Prestressed concrete(PSC) bridge structures with a number of continuous spans has been segmentally built in many countries. These methods include incremental launching method, movable scaffolding method, full staging method and balanced cantilever method. In these segmentally constructed prestressed concrete bridges, many construction joints exist and these construction joints are weak points in PSC bridges. The prestress force can be introduced prestress force continuously through the construction joints of PSC bridge superstructure using tendon couplers. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the structural behavior and ultimate flexural strength of construction joints in PSC girder bridge members. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and a series of full-scale tests have been performed. Ultimate flexural strength of construction joint in PSC members with tendon couplers is decreased by approximately 10% for non-coupled members.
An isolated bridge using a laminated rubber bearing provides an elastic support of continuous span and prevents the transmission of excessive seismic force from the substructure of the bridge, which uses a metal bearing, as this permits a relative displacement between the super-and substructure. Hawever, this kind of bridge is caused long periodic, as a result of enlargingtotal thickness of the rubber, since it corresponds to temperature change and increases the horizontal displacement of the superstructure. This paper uses a numerical study to describe the pounding problem between adjacent decks when subjected to a strong earthquake. Furthermore, numerical results are clarified for the buffer rubber used to mitigate the pounding force between adjacent decks.
An analysis procedure of 2-dimensional bridge dynamics has been developed by using force-deformation model, which simulates the pier motion under biaxial bending due to the bi-directional input seismic excitations. A three-dimensional mechanical model is utilized, which can consider the other major phenomena such as pounding, rotation of the superstructure, abutment stiffness degradation, and motions of the foundation motions. The bi-directional dynamic behaviors of the bridge are then examined by investigating the relative displacements of each oscillator to the ground. It is found that the nonlinearity of the pier due to biaxial bending affects the pier motions, but the global bridge behaviors are greatly governed by the pounding phenomena and stiffness degradation of the abutment-backfill system. Especially, the relative displacement of the abutment system (A2) with movable supports to the ground is increased about 30% due to the abutment stiffness degradation.
This paper develops practical and realistic reliability models and methods for the evalusion of system reliability and system reliability-based rating of R.C box-girder bridge superstructures. The precise prediction of reserved carrying capacity of bridge as a system is extremely difficult expecially when the bridges are highly redundant and significantly deteriorated or damaged. This paper proposes a new approach for the evaluation of reserved system carrying capacity of bridges in terms of equivalent system-strength, which may be defined as a bridge system-strength corresponding to the system reliability of the bridge. This can be derived from an inverse process based on the concept of FOSM form of system reliability index. The strength limit state models for R.C box-girder bridges suggested in the paper are based on the basic bending and shear strength. and the system reliability problem of box-girder superstructure is formulated as parallel-series models obtained from the FMA(Failure Mode Approach) based on major failure mechanism or critical failure states of each girder. AFOSM and IST(Importance Sampling Technique) simulation algorithm is used for the reliability analysis of the proposed models.
An efficient and accurate algorithm is proposed to evaluate the reliability of cable-stayed bridges accounting for soil-pile interaction. The proposed algorithm integrates the finite-element method and the response surface method. The finite-element method is used to model the cable-stayed bridge including soil-pile interaction. The reliability index is evaluated based on the response surface method. Uncertainties in the superstructure, the substructure and load parameters are incorporated in the proposed algorithm. A long span steel cable-stayed bridge with a main span length of 1088 m built in China is considered as an illustrative example. The reliability of the bridge is evaluated for the strength and serviceability performance functions. Results of the study show that when strength limit states for both girder and tower are considered, soil-pile interaction has significant effects on the reliability of steel cable-stayed bridges. Further, a detailed sensitivity study shows that the modulus of subgrade reaction is the most important soil-pile interaction-related parameter influencing the reliability of steel cable-stayed bridges.
In this paper, through operational modal analysis and ambient vibration tests, the dynamic characteristics of a multi-span simply-supported reinforced concrete highway bridge deck was determined and the results were used to assess the quality of construction of the individual spans. Supporting finite element (FE) models were created and analyzed according to the design drawings. After carrying out the dynamic tests and extracting the modal properties of the deck, the quality of construction was relatively assessed by comparing the results obtained from all the tests from the individual spans and the FE results. A comparison of the test results among the different spans showed a maximum difference value of around 9.3 percent between the superstructure's natural frequencies. These minor differences besides the obtained values of modal damping ratios, in which the differences were not more than 5 percent, can be resulted from suitable performance, health, and acceptable construction quality of the bridge.
The additional axial force of CWR(continuous welded rail) is occurred by structure-track interaction, in reverse, fixed supports of structure are applied the large load by that. Ratio of load which transferred on support through the bridge superstructure with one-side REJ by acceleration and braking load are stated in High-Speed Rail Design Criteria(2005). On the other hand the horizontal forces of support delivered to the load due to thermal loads has been no report about the criteria. Therefore, this study was performed the review of the reaction and displacement on support by structure-track interaction in a special bridge(composite brdiges, 45+55+55+45=200m) with REJ acting on the temperature load. As a result, because fixed support of a special bridge or a continuous bridge with REJ under the temperature load which is constant load has been acted the large lateral load by structure-track interaction, when determining the fixed bearing capacity of structure should be reflected in the results to secure the safety of structures was confirmed.
This paper investigates the seismic response of a typical non-navigable continuous girder bridge isolated with friction sliding bearings of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao link projects in China. The effectiveness of the friction pendulum system (FPS) and accuracy of the numerical model were evaluated by a 1/20 scaled bridge model using shaking table tests. Based on the hysteretic properties of friction pendulum system (FPS), double concave friction pendulum (DCFP), and triple friction pendulum system (TFPS), seismic response analyses of isolated bridges with the three sliding-type bearings are systematically carried out considering soil-pile interaction under offshore soft clay conditions. The fast nonlinear analysis (FNA) method and response spectrum are employed to investigate the seismic response of isolated offshore bridge structures. The numerical results show that the implementation of the three sliding-type bearings effectively reduce the base shear and bending moment of the reinforced concrete pier, at the cost of increasing the absolute displacement of the bridge superstructure. Furthermore, the TFPS and DCFP bearings show better isolation effect than FPS bearing for the example continuous girder bridge.
The structural behavior of superstructure by ILM is strongly dependent on the process of launching nose according to the construction process. The ratios of length, weight, and flexural stiffness of launching nose to those of superstructure are taken as the analysis parameters in this study. The interaction behaviors are analyzed according to the variation of parameters. Design formulas to pursue the optimum values for length, weight, and stiffness of launching nose are suggested through the parametric study. As a result, the minimum stiffness ratio is analyzed as I₂/I=0.045 and I₁/I=0.02 for the optimum track of the sectional force while the elastics modulus ratio is 6.8359. Additionally, the design results of real projects are analyzed by the developed formulas to verify that they are designed well in structurally optimal point of view.
An improved finite element modeling technique is proposed for the assessment of load carrying capacity partilly prestressed concrete beam bridges. Based on the finite element method of analysis, shell and frame elements are utilized to model the slab and beams of the superstructure, respectively. In the modeling of superstructure, the emphasis is placed on the use of rigid link between the middle surface of slab and mid-plane of beam. This paper also includes the comparision of three different equations that used in the calculation of effective moment of inertia for the partially prestressed concrete beams. Numerical analysis is performed for the unstrengthened and strengthened bridges. The obtained results are compared with those of load test for a prototype bridge. Agreement with the numerical solutions by using the proposed method and load test results is generally excellent.
