This paper evaluated the structural safety of an aging PSC I-girder bridge with rebar corrosion in the deck. The geometry and rebar of the bridge were designed based on an actual PSC I-girder bridge, and the numerical analysis was performed considering the crack of concrete and yielding of steel rebar. According to the evaluation criteria of Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation, this study defined two criteria of rebar exposure and corrosion rates to construct a total of 32 corrosion scenarios. Rebar exposure was defined as the exposure of tensile rebars in the bridge deck due to the removal of cover concrete. The results of the analysis showed that the safety and rating factors of the bridge decreased with increasing rebar exposure and corrosion rates. For the rebar corrosion rate more than 50%, the safety grade of the bridge should be carefully evaluated for all the rebar exposure rate. When the rebar corrosion rate exceeds 57%, the bridge was evaluated as E grade regardless of rebar exposure rate. A correlation analysis for a 2% of rebar exposure rate found that the bridge was evaluated as A grade up to 55.8% corrosion rate, C grade up to 56.9%, D grade up to 58.5%, and E grade for corrosion rate greater than 58.5%. This study indicates the necessity of a quantitative evaluation of rebar corrosion for evaluating the structural safety of aging bridges.
The continuous welded rail(CWR) track without the rail expansion joint has many advantages over the conventional track in a variety of fields including the speed-up and the ride comport. However, due to the excessive axial force in the CWR and the track-bridge interactive behavior, inevitably, the rail expansion joint must be installed at the vulnerable zone such as the bridge end zone, etc. In this rail expansion joint zone, the frequency of the maintenance work to repair the track irregularity is on the rise. This is because that the creep of the sleeper is occurred in the moveable zone of the rail expansion joint. In this study, among the several options for reducing the track irregularity on the rail expansion joint zone, the application and efficiency of the tied sleeper is investigated. Field test construction has been conducted, then the progress of the track irregularity and the frequency of the maintenance work are analyzed before and after the filed test construction.

In the maintenance and retrofit planning of a bridge system, the optimal strategy for inspection and repair are suggested by minimizing the expected total life-cycle cost, which includes the initial cost, the costs of inspection, repair, and failure. Degradation of seismic performance is modeled by using a damage function. And failure probability is computed according to the degree of damage detection by random vibration theory and the event tree analysis. As an example to illustrate the proposed approach, a 10-span continuous bridge structure is used. The numerical results show that the optimum number of the inspection and the repair are increased, as the seismic intensity is increased and the soil condition of a site becomes more flexible.

Service life of bridges should be evaluated by physical life considering damage/deterioration. But it is difficult to identify optimal maintenance scenario due to insufficient research related to that. To identify optimal maintenance scenario, it is needed to develope life cycle profile model of condition state variation by deterioration factor. The LCP model has been developed in consideration of regression analysis and survey in this study. It is expected that the LCP model could help to achieve HBMS system improvement.

Load carrying capacity evaluation is very important element in maintenance of bridge. There are several reasons about differences in deflection caused by loading test and structural analysis. Especially when we do modeling uniformly without considering real structural characteristics of support, this problem can be more deepened. This computes modification factor high so we may evaluate the load carrying capacity more than fact. In this study, we do structural analysis nearing real structure with negative bending moment of support that computes considering structural characteristics of support, and then evaluate load carrying capacity.
It is increasing construction of long span railway bridge with concrete track system for speed up of railway and efficient maintenance of track. As the sleeper of the concrete track system layed on a bridge is fixed on deck of the bridge, the displacement of the sleeper and deck is same. Therefore, the spacing between two sleeper installed at the end of the adjacent deck near the expansion joint of bridge becomes vary according to the longitudinal expansion of a deck by temperature change. By the way, if the spacing of sleepers become increase excessively, it causes large bending stress of in a rail, and it can leads failure or reduction of fatigue life of the rail. And also the excessive displacement of the rail may induce decrease ride comfort. Therefore, in order to prevent such problems, the allowable maximum sleeper spacing at a bridge expansion joint was mutually determined. And, the determination procedure of the maximum bridge expansion length based on the allowable sleeper spacing was suggested.
This study has been motivated to examine the performance of a wireless sensor system under the typhoons as well as to analyze the effect of the typhoons on the bridge's vibration responses and the variation of cable forces. During the long-term field experiment on a real cable-stayed bridge in years 2011-2012, the bridge had experienced two consecutive typhoons, Bolaven and Tembin, and the wireless sensor system had recorded data of wind speeds and vibration responses from a few survived sensor nodes. In this paper, the wireless structural health monitoring of stay cables under the two consecutive typhoons is presented. Firstly, the wireless monitoring system for cable-stayed bridge is described. Multi-scale vibration sensor nodes are utilized to measure both acceleration and PZT dynamic strain from stay cables. Also, cable forces are estimated by a tension force monitoring software based on vibration properties. Secondly, the cable-stayed bridge with the wireless monitoring system is described and its wireless monitoring capacities for deck and cables are evaluated. Finally, the structural health monitoring of stay cables under the attack of the two typhoons is described. Wind-induced deck vibration, cable vibration and cable force variation are examined based on the field measurements in the cable-stayed bridge under the two consecutive typhoons.

Bridge structural health monitoring with the aim of continuously assessing structural safety and reliability represents a topic of major importance for worldwide infrastructure managers. In the last two decades, due to their potential economic and operational advantages, drive-by approaches experienced growing consideration from researcher and engineers. This work addresses two technical topics regarding indirect frequency estimation methods: bridge and vehicle dynamics overlapping, and bridge expansion joints impact. The experimental campaign was conducted on a mixed multi-span bridge located in Lombardy using a Ford Galaxy instrumented with a mesh of wireless accelerometers. The onboard time series were acquired for a number of 10 passages over the bridge, performed at a travelling speed of 30 km/h, with no limitations imposed to traffic. Exploiting an ad-hoc sensors positioning, pitch vehicle motion was compensated, allowing to estimate the first two bridge bending frequencies from PSD functions; moreover, the herein adopted approach proved to be insensitive to joints disturbance. Conclusively, a sensitivity study has been conducted to trace the relationship between estimation accuracy and number of trips considered in the analysis. Promising results were found, pointing out a clear positive correlation especially for the first bending frequency.
Bridges are critical to the civil engineering infrastructure network as they facilitate movement of people, the transportation of goods and services. Given the aging of bridge infrastructure, federal officials mandate visual inspections biennially to identify necessary repair actions which are time, cost, and labor-intensive. Additionally, the expansion joints of bridges are rarely monitored due to cost. However, expansion joints are critical as they absorb movement from thermal effects, loadings strains, impact, abutment settlement, and vehicle motion movement. Thus, the need to monitor bridge expansion joints efficiently, at a low cost, and wirelessly is desired. This paper addresses bridge joint monitoring needs to develop a cost-effective, real-time wireless system that can be validated in a full-scale bridge structure. To this end, a wireless expansion joint monitoring was developed using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) sensors. An in-service bridge was selected as a testbed to validate the performance of the developed system compared with traditional displacement sensor, LVDT, temperature and humidity sensors. The short-term monitoring campaign with the wireless sensor system with the internet protocol version 6 over the time slotted channel hopping mode of IEEE 802.15.4e (6TiSCH) network showed reliable results, providing high potential of the developed system for effective joint monitoring at a low cost.
