  • Earthquake damage civil engineering structures every year in the world and bridges are no exception. Bridge structures have proven to be vulnerable to earthquake, sustaining damage to substructure and foundation and being totally destroys as superstructures collapse from their supporting elements. The poor seismic performance of bridge structures is surprising in view of the substantial advance made in design and construction for vertical load. Recently, bridge spans have been pushed further than before, alignment has become increasingly complex and aesthetic requirement have been become more demanding. To reduce the seismic force and to improve the safety of the advanced bridges, the bridge bearings which are the substructures and foundations and their connections to the superstructure become more important and critical elements. Therefore, the functions about seismic devices to be using as bridge bearing are discussed.

  • Bridge dynamic behaviors are examined under seismic excitations including the local scour effect. The corresponding simplified mechanical model, which can also consider the effect of other influence elements, is proposed to simulate the bridge motions. The scour depth around the pier is estimated by the CSU equation recommended by the HEC-18, and the local scour effect upon global bridge motions is then investigated by applying various foundation stiffness based upon the reduced embedded depths. From the results, it is found that seismic responses of a bridge with the same scour depth level for both piers increase as the scour depth increase due to the local scour effect. The scour effect is found to be significant under weak excitations and still to be quite notable even for moderate excitations.

  • Incheon bridge project is to construct total 12km long bridges on the sea consist of 800m span length cable stayed bridge, approach bridge and viaduct bridge based on LRFD design specification. To design pile foundations by RCD of each bridge unit, total 4 number of preliminary full scale pile load tests with Osterberg cell method were carried out on the piles for testing. The test load was planned to more than the expected design ultimate capacity and about 29,000tons maximum load was recorded. From the interpretation of test results, design parameters are evaluated and applied to the design. Preliminary pile load test plan and detailed execution of pile load tests are introduced and summarized. The resistance factors are presented for pile design of Incheon Bridge Project in LRFD considering variation of ground conditions and number of test piles.

  • In order to obtain the impact of socket connection interface forms and socket gap sizes on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) socket prefabricated bridge piers, quasi-static tests for three socket prefabricated piers with different column-foundation connection interface forms and reserved socket gap sizes, as well as to the corresponding cast-in-situ reinforced concrete piers, were carried out. The influence of socket connection structure on various seismic performance indexes of socket prefabricated piers was studied by comparing and analyzing the hysteresis curve and skeleton curve obtained through the experiment. Results showed that the ultimate failure mode of the socket prefabricated pier with circumferential corrugated treatment at the connection interface was the closest to that of the monolithic pier, the maximum bearing capacity was slightly less than that of the cast-in-situ pier but larger than that of the socket pier with roughened connection interface, and the displacement ductility and accumulated energy consumption capacity were smaller than those of socket piers with roughened connection interface. The connection interface treatment form had less influence on the residual deformation of socket prefabricated bridge piers. With the increase in the reserved socket gap size between the precast pier column and the precast foundation, the bearing capacity of the prefabricated socket bridge pier component, as well as the ductility and residual displacement of the component, would be reduced and had unfavorable effect on the energy dissipation property of the bridge pier component.

  • Structures such as bridge columns installed on the asymmetric ground such as mountain areas and sloping ground are subject to various loads such as wind, temperature, earthquake, and etc. The pile foundation is generally applied to bridge columns on the asymmetric ground in order to stably support structures. The behavior of the pile foundation supporting bridge columns changes due to various load conditions. In particular, ground-pile-structure interactions should be studied to analyze the behavior of the pile foundation that supports bridge columns effected by dynamic loads such as earthquakes. The pile foundation installed on the asymmetric ground effected by the earthquake has the complicated dynamic interaction between the foundation and the ground due to the ground slope, the difference in soil resistance according to the shaking direction, and the ground movements. In this study, the 1g shaking table tests were conducted to confirm the effect of the slope of the sloping ground on the dynamic behavior of group piles supporting the superstructure installed at the berm of the sloping sandy soil which is the asymmetric ground. The result shows that the acceleration of the pile cap and the superstructure decrease as the slope of the sloping ground increase, and the slope of the dynamic p-y curve of the pile decrease.

  • This study ranges from planning phase to the detailed design phase of steel box girder bridge and proposes ways to generate semantic information of components through Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), a data model for Building Information Modeling (BIM). The classification of components of steel box girder bridge was performed to define information items required for identifying semantic information based on IFC, and spatial information items based on topology and physical information items based on functions of components were classified to create additional properties that does not support IFC by applying user-defined property set within the IFC framework. Steel box girder bridge information model based on IFC was implemented through BIM software and semantic information input interface, which was developed in this study to examine the effectiveness of the additionally created user-defined property. Furthermore, the quantity take-off of components was performed through information model of steel box girder bridge, and the applicability of the proposed method was tested by comparing the quantity take-off based on design document with the result.

  • A derelict bridge called WoljungGyo was restored in Gyeongju, the capital city of ancient Silla. WoljungGyo was originally built in 760AD, and later rebuilt in 1280AD during the Goryeo Kingdom. The bridge lasted in working condition for at least 520 years. The bridge was uncovered to the remains of both abutments and four piers, with only one or two steps remaining. One of the foundation for piers showed evidence of partial settlement. The cause of the partial settlement is important for the successful restoration of the bridge so that an extensive investigation was carried out, which includes layer stratification by boring, 2-D stiffness profiling by surface-wave tests, and large scaled-plate load test for evaluating capacity. In addition to the field studies in the Woljunggyo bridge, 3-D finite element analysis was also conducted. Based on the results of the site investigation and the numerical analysis, it was concluded that the further ground improvement to build the piers was not necessary so that the gravels were placed and leveled underneath the existing pier stones to compensate partial settlement before the restoration.

  • The rahmen bridge is well known common type of bridge in which all members are connected rigidly. The rahmen bridge is built for several situations because it has many advantages such as no need of bridge bearing system, easy of maintenance, reduction of the cross-sectional area of superstructure, and relatively low construction cost compared with other bridge types. Recently, to lengthen the span of rahmen bridge system, steel-concrete composite beam is used for superstructure of rahmen bridge instead of normal concrete girder with slab. However, member forces are increased because of extension of span length of superstructure and substructure is designed and constructed inefficiently when steel-concrete composite rahmen bridge is designed. In this study, new-type steel-concrete composite bridge is suggested. New-type steel-concrete composite rahmen bridge is adopted hinge connection between abutment and foundation for the reduction of the bending momemt at the foundation. In this study, we present the results of experiment conducted to estimate the load carrying capacity of new-type steel-concrete composite rahmen bridge and the structural characteristics of hinge connection.

  • In this study, scale down model bridge piers were fabricated and non-destructive experiments conducted with an impact load to determine scours in the ground adjacent to the bridge piers using the natural frequency of the bridge piers. Three scale-model bridge piers with different heights were fabricated, and they penetrated the ground at a depth of 0.35 m. The scours around the bridge piers were simulated as a side scour and foundation scour. The experiments were conducted in 13 steps, in which scouring around the model bridge piers was performed in 0.05 m excavation units. To derive the natural frequency, the impact load was measured with three accelerometers attached to the model bridge piers. The impact load was applied with an impact hammer, and the top of the model bridge pier was struck perpendicularly to the bridge axis. The natural frequency according to the scour progress was calculated with a fast Fourier transform. The results demonstrated that the natural frequency of each bridge pier tended to decrease with scour progress. The natural frequency also decreased with increasing pier height. With scour progress, a side scour occurred at 70% or higher of the initial natural frequency, and a foundation scour occurred at less than 70%.
