Purpose: This study was conducted in order to examine the changes of muscle activitis of erector spine muscles and Gluteus maximus during the bridge exercise with adductor muscles. Method: After attaching the EMG device to the Gluteus maximus and erector spine muscles of the 100 healthy adult males in their 20s, applying the stabilizer pressure biofeedback device between the knees, the bridge movement was carried out 10 seconds. Result: During the exercise of the bridge movement, the muscular activities in erector spine and gluteus maximus were significantly different in ralation to the simultaneous contractive adductor muscles of the bridge(p<.05). Conclusion: Thus, the bridge exercise is carried out in conjunction with the simultaneous contraction of adductor muscles that suggests that the training are more effective in erector spine and gluteus maximus activities.
Long-term properties of concrete affect structures in many respects, not excepting dynamic behaviors. This paper investigates the influence of concrete creep on the dynamic behaviors of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) arch bridges, by means of combining the analytical method for the creep of axially compressed CFT members, which is based on Model B3 for concrete creep, with the finite element model of CFT arch bridges. By this approach, the changes of the stress and strain of each element in the bridge with time can be obtained and then transformed into damping and stiffness matrices in the dynamic equation involved in the finite element model at different times. A numerical example of a long-span half-through CFT arch bridge shows that creep influences the natural vibration characteristics and seismic responses of the bridge considerably, especially in the early age. In addition, parameter analysis demonstrates that concrete composition, compressive strength and steel ratio have an obvious effect on the seismic response of the CFT arch bridge.
A railway open deck plate girder bridge without ballast should support relatively heavier vehicle loads compared with its self-weight. For such a reason, actual dynamic response of the bridge is considerably differing with normal prediction because additional masses added from vehicle to a bridge have an effect on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge. These differences affect to the estimation of a natural frequency change that adopted for one of the evaluation technique of strength decrease, and these make trouble to the analysis of a natural frequency from the field test data that measured at the bridge subjected to a running vehicle. In this study, classification of mass participation ratio for each component of open deck plate girder bridge without ballast and the comparison according to the change of vibration characteristics for the case of subjected to a running vehicle were accomplished.
The single-column pier girder bridge, due to its low engineering cost, small footprint, and aesthetic appearance, is extensively employed in urban viaducts and interchange ramps. However, its structural design makes it susceptible to eccentric loads, flexural-torsional coupling effects, and centrifugal forces, among others. To evaluate its anti-overturning performance reasonably, it is crucial to determine the reaction force of the support for the single-column pier girder bridge. However, due to the interaction between vehicle and bridge and the complexity of vibration modes, it poses a significant challenge to analyze the theory or finite element method of single-column pier girder bridges. The unit load bearing reaction coefficient method is proposed in this study to facilitate the static analysis. Numerous parameter analyses have been conducted to account for the dynamic amplification effect. The results of these analyses reveal that the dynamic amplification factor is independent of road surface roughness but is influenced by factors such as the position of the support. Based on parameter analysis, the formula of the dynamic amplification factor is derived by fitting.
The bridge columns with lap-splice reinforcements in earthquake suffered a brittle bond-slip failure due to deterioration of the lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcements without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP wrapping. The retrofitted columns using FRP wrapping showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the circumferential confinement effect of existing circular bridge pier strengthened with FRP wrapping for poor lap-splice details. The effects on the confinement of FRP wrapping, such as gap lengths between footing and FRP, fiber orientations, and thicknesses of FRP, were investigated by quasi-static experiments.
We develop single-crystal poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiopene nanowires using liquid-bridge-mediated nanotransfer printing via vapor phase polymerization. This direct printing method can simultaneously enable the synthesis, alignment and patterning of the nanowires from molecular ink solutions. Twoor three-dimensional complex structures of various single-crystal organic nanowires were directly fabricated over a large area using many types of molecular inks. This method is capable of generating several optoelectronic devices. LB-nTM is based on the direct transfer of various materials from a mold to a substrate via a liquid bridge between them. To demonstrate its usefulness, we used LB-nTM to fabricate nanowire field-effect transistors and arrays of 6,13-bis (triisopropyl- silylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-PEN) nanowire field-effect transistors.
Pounding is a major cause of bridge damage during earthquakes. In an extreme situation, it can even contribute to the unseating of bridge girders. Long-span bridges will inevitably experience spatially varying ground motions. Soil-structure interaction (SSI) may play a significant role in the structural response of these structures. The objective of this research is to experimentally investigate the effect of spatially varying ground motions on the response of a three-segment bridge considering SSI and pounding. To incorporate SSI, the model was placed on sand contained in sandboxes. The sandboxes were fabricated using soft rubber in order to minimise the rigid wall effect. The spatially varying ground motion inputs were simulated based on the New Zealand design spectra for soft soil, shallow soil and strong rock conditions, using an empirical coherency loss function. The results show that with pounding, SSI can amplify the pier bending moments and the relative opening displacements.

A great number of moment-resisting steel structures collapsed due to ductile crack initiation at welded beam-column connections, followed by explosive brittle fracture in the Kobe (Hyogoken-Nanbu) earthquake in 1995. A series of experimental and numerical studies on cracking behaviors of beam-column connections in steel bridge piers were carried out by the authors' team. This paper aims to study the effect of post weld treatment on cracking behaviors of the connections during a strong earthquake event. Experiments of three specimens with different weld finishes, i.e., as-welded, R-finish, and burr grinding, were conducted. The experimental results indicate that the instants of ductile crack initiation are greatly delayed for the specimens with R-finish and burr grinding finishes compared with the as-welded one. The strain concentration effect in the connection is also greatly reduced in the specimens with post weld treatment compared with the as-welded one, which was also verified in the tests.

A cable-stayed bridge (CSB) is one of the most complicated structures, especially when subjected to earthquakes and taking into consideration the effect of soil-structure-interaction (SSI). A CSB of a 500 m mid-span was modeled by the SAP2000 software and was subjected to four different earthquakes. To mitigate the harmful effect of the vibration generated from each earthquake, four mitigation schemes were used and compared with the non-mitigation model to determine the effectiveness of each scheme, when applying on the SSI or fixed CSB models. For earthquake mitigation, tuned mass damper (TMD) systems and spring dampers with different placements were used to help reduce the seismic response of the CBS model. The pylons, the mid-span of the deck and the pylon-deck connections are the best TMDs and spring dampers placements to achieve an effective reduction of the earthquake response on such bridges.
