  • The characteristic of load-distribution is investigated by using nonlinear analysis with a field loading test of existing bridge In this study, nonlinear load-distribution technique for quantitative analysis was adopted. The results were compared with linear solution technique with data from failure test at existing RCT-girder bridge and examine the adequacy of the failure mode. The results of this study showed that the linear solution technique and the proposed nonlinear solution technique agreed well in linear region but did not matched well in nonlinear region because of load-redistribution, and that the effect of load-redistribution was considered to analysis of nonlinear region by linear solution.

  • Load variations on a distribution line result in voltage fluctuations at the point of common coupling (PCC). In order to keep the magnitude of the PCC voltage constant at its rated value and obtain zero voltage regulation (ZVR), a D-STATCOM is installed for voltage correction. Moreover, the ZVR mode of a D-STATCOM can also be used to balance the source current during unbalanced loading. For medium voltage and high power applications, a D-STATCOM is realized by the cascaded H-bridge topology. In the ZVR mode, the D-STATCOM may draw unbalanced current and in this process is required to handle different phase powers leading to deviations in the cluster voltages. Zero sequence voltage needs to be injected for ZVR mode, which creates circulating power among the phases of the D-STATCOM. The computed zero sequence voltage and the individual DC capacitor balancing controller help the DC cluster voltage follow the reference voltage. The effectiveness of the control scheme is verified by modeling the system in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The obtained simulations are further validated by the experimental results using a dSPACE DS1106 and five-level D-STATCOM experimental set up.

  • This paper presents a nondestructive evaluation approach for system identification (SID) of real railway bridges using field vibration test results. First, a multi-phase SID scheme designed on the basis of eigenvalue sensitivity concept is presented. Next, the proposed multi-phase approach is evaluated from field vibration tests on a real railway bridge (Wondongcheon bridge) located in Yangsan, Korea. On the steel girder bridge, a few natural frequencies and mode shapes are experimentally measured under the ambient vibration condition. The corresponding modal parameters are numerically calculated from a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model established for the target bridge. Eigenvalue sensitivities are analyzed for potential model-updating parameters of the FE model. Then, structural subsystems are identified phase-by-phase using the proposed model-updating procedure. Based on model-updating results, a baseline model and a nondestructive evaluation of test bridge are identified.

  • This paper studied the dynamic response of a new gasbag-type floating bridge under the effect of a moving load. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method was used to simulate the movement of seawater and air, and the penalty-based method was used to study the coupling between gasbags and fluid. A three-dimensional finite element model of the floating bridge was established, and the numerical model was verified by comparing with the experimental results. In order to prevent resonance, the natural frequencies and flexural mode shapes were analyzed. Based on the initial state analysis, the dynamic responses of the floating bridge subjected to different moving loads were investigated. Vertical displacements and radial deformations of gasbags under different loads were compared, and principal stress distributions of gasbags were researched while driving. The hinge forces between adjacent modules were calculated to ensure the connection strength. Besides, the floating bridge under wave impacting was analyzed. Those results can provide references for the analysis and design of this new floating bridge.

  • In this paper, the dynamic stability evaluation of special bridge for high speed railway under ground excitation is performed. The mass, damping, stiffness matrices of bridge are derived from the modal frequencies and mode shape vectors which can be obtained by commercial program. And the high speed train is modeled as multi-single d.o.f models for the sake of vehicle-bridge interaction analysis. In the vehicle-bridge interaction analysis, the vertical directional interaction is only considered. As a numerical example, the 3 span Extradosed bridge which is expected to be installed in Ho-Nam high speed railroad is considered. The analysis results show that the example bridge satisfies the criteria of dynamic stability.

  • Dynamic response of a three span continuous bridge has been determined by full scale experiments on the bridge. In the experiments, a heavy vehicle was driven across the bridge at different speeds and along different lanes of travel and the strains were recorded at different locations. The bridge was made of reinforced concrete and was asymmetric in plan and in elevation. Frequencies and modes of vibration excited by the vehicle were determined. The dependence of the dynamic amplification on bridge location and vehicle speed was investigated and dynamic amplifications up to 1.5 were recorded, which was higher than values predicted by bridge design codes. It was evident that when this asymmetric bridge was loaded by an asymmetric forcing function, higher modes, which are lateral and/or torsional in nature, were excited. Dynamic modulus of elasticity and the support stiffness influenced the natural frequencies of the bridge, which in turn influenced the dynamic amplifications. Larger than anticipated dynamic amplification factors and the excitation of lateral and/or torsional modes should be of interest and concern to bridge engineers.

  • In recent years, having the advantages of being small, low in cost and high in efficiency, Half-wave resonant type, (having only one output diode), is used in ZVS Half-Bridge DC/DC converter. This paper presents the operation mode by multi-resonant factors in the Half-wave type multi-resonant converter with direct Buck chopper circuit operated in discontinuous current mode. To study the characteristics of a multi-resonant operation in steady-state, the characteristic impedances in each mode and safe operation-region(S.O.R) are reported. Computer simulation and experimental data are also riven to verify the theoretical results.

  • This paper presents a novel circuit topology of a high efficiency single-phase power conditioner. This power conditioner is composed of time-sharing sinewave absolute pulse width modulated boost chopper with a bypass diode in the first power processing stage and time-sharing sinewave pulse width modulated full-bridge inverter in the second power processing stage operated by time-sharing dual mode pulse pattern control scheme. The unique operating principle of the two power processing stage with time-sharing dual mode sinewave modulation scheme is described with a design example. This paper proposes also a sinewave tracking voltage controlled soft switching PWM boost chopper with a passive auxiliary edge-resonant snubber. The new conceptual operating principle of this novel power conditioner related to new energy utilization system is presented and discussed through the experimental results.

  • Recently, many nations have released standard such as IEC 1000-3-2 and IEEE 519 which impose a limit on the harmonic current drawn by equipment connected to AC line in order to prevent the distortion of an AC line. Among the wide variety of active methods for improving power factor and harmonic distortion, the boost converter is very effective because it has a continuous line current , small choke filter and high power factor. In high power application, however, the bridge diode loss in the boost converter has made the efficiency lower and the temperature of the board higher. A new approach without bridge diode to make the same characteristics of the conventional boost converter has also been developed. This paper present the comparisons between the continuous current mode(CCM) operated conventional boost converter and the boundary current mode(BCM) operated the bridgeless boost converter for high efficiency and high power factor.

  • Recently it is used seismic analysis like single mode spectrum analysis, multi mode spectrum analysis and time history analysis in Korea. Because bridges are not special form of them but regular and simple form of them in our country, we must develope seismic analysis program of bridge based on single nude spectrum analysis. The program developed by this study reduces a Quantity and a time of calculation compared to SAP90 and gives accurate answers without errors. In the case of commercial program if we look for seismic load(P/sub e/(x)), we must increase the number of node and the larger the number of node the more a quantity and a time of calculation. But this program is exactly solved with basic node compared to commercial program.
