Efficient Kernel Integrity Monitor Design for Commodity Mobile Application Processors

  • In recent years, there are increasing threats of rootkits that undermine the integrity of a system by manipulating OS kernel. To cope with the rootkits, in Vigilare, the snoop-based monitoring which snoops the memory traffics of the host system was proposed. Although the previous work shows its detection capability and negligible performance loss, the problem is that the proposed design is not acceptable in recent commodity mobile application processors (APs) which have become de facto the standard computing platforms of smart devices. To mend this problem and adopt the idea of snoop-based monitoring in commercial products, in this paper, we propose a snoop-based monitor design called S-Mon, which is designed for the AP platforms. In designing S-Mon, we especially consider two design constraints in the APs which were not addressed in Vigilare; the unified memory model and the crossbar switch interconnect. Taking into account those, we derive a more realistic architecture for the snoop-based monitoring and a new hardware module, called the region controller, is also proposed. In our experiments on a simulation framework modeling a productionquality device, it is shown that our S-Mon can detect the rootkit attacks while the runtime overhead is also negligible.

Insights into Tan Spot and Stem Rust Resistance and Susceptibility by Studying the Pre-Green Revolution Global Collection of Wheat

  • Tan spot (TS), caused by the fungus Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died) Drechs, is an important foliar disease of wheat and has become a threat to world wheat production since the 1970s. In this study a globally diverse pre-1940s collection of 247 wheat genotypes was evaluated against Ptr ToxA, P. tritici-repentis race 1, and stem rust to determine if; (i) acquisition of Ptr ToxA by the P. tritici-repentis from Stagonospora nodorum led to increased pathogen virulence or (ii) incorporation of TS susceptibility during development stem rust resistant cultivars led to an increase in TS epidemics globally. Most genotypes were susceptible to stem rust; however, a range of reactions to TS and Ptr ToxA were observed. Four combinations of diseasetoxin reactions were observed among the genotypes; TS susceptible-Ptr ToxA sensitive, TS susceptible-Ptr ToxA insensitive, TS resistant-Ptr ToxA insensitive, and TS resistant-Ptr ToxA toxin sensitive. A weak correlation (r = 0.14 for bread wheat and -0.082 for durum) was observed between stem rust susceptibility and TS resistance. Even though there were no reported epidemics in the pre-1940s, TS sensitive genotypes were widely grown in that period, suggesting that Ptr ToxA may not be an important factor responsible for enhanced prevalence of TS.

Scheduler-based Defense Method against Address Translation Redirection Attack (ATRA) (메모리 주소 변환 공격에 대한 스케줄러 기반의 방어 방법)

  • Since hardware-based kernel-integrity monitoring systems run in the environments that are isolated from the monitored OS, attackers in the monitored OS cannot undermine the security of monitoring systems. However, because the monitoring is performed by using physical addresses, the hardware-based monitoring systems are vulnerable to Address Translation Redirection Attack (ATRA) that manipulates virtual-to-physical memory translations. To ameliorate this problem, we propose a scheduler-based ATRA detection method. The method detects ATRA during the process scheduling by leveraging the fact that kernel scheduler engages every context switch of processes. We implemented a prototype on Android emulator and TizenTV, and verified that it successfully detected ATRA without incurring any significant performance loss.

A system for detecting document leakage by insiders through continuous user authentication by using document reading behavior (문서 읽기 행위를 이용한 연속적 사용자 인증 기반의 내부자 문서유출 탐지기술 연구)

  • There have been various techniques to detect and control document leakage; however, most techniques concentrate on document leakage by outsiders. There are rare techniques to detect and monitor document leakage by insiders. In this study, we observe user's document reading behavior to detect and control document leakage by insiders. We make each user's document reading patterns from attributes gathered by a logger program running on Microsoft Word, and then we apply the proposed system to help determine whether a current user who is reading a document matches the true user. We expect that our system based on document reading behavior can effectively prevent document leakage.

  • The osseous or osteocutaneous free fibula flap has become the gold standard for most mandibular reconstructions because of its favorable osseous characteristics. However, disadvantages, such as the time-consuming reconstructive step, difficulty in performing the osteotomies to precisely recreate the shape of the missing segment of mandible and poor bone-to-bone contact play a role in making the surgeons look for alternative flaps. With the advent of computerized design software, which accurately plans complex 3-dimensional reconstructions, has become a process that is more efficient and precise. However, the ability to transfer the computerized plan into the surgical field with stereolithographic models and guides has been a significant development in advancing reconstruction in the maxillofacial regions. The ability to "pre-plan" the case, mirror and superimpose natural structures into diseased and deformed areas, as well as the ability to reproduce these plans with good surgical precision has decreased overall operative time, and has helped facilitate functional and esthetic reconstruction. We describe a complex case treated with this technique, showing the power and elegance of computer assisted maxillofacial reconstruction from the University of Michigan, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Changes in maximum lip-closing force after extraction and nonextraction orthodontic treatments

  • Objective: The aims of the present study were to evaluate the changes in the maximum lip-closing force (MLF) after orthodontic treatment with or without premolar extractions and verify the correlation of these changes with dentoskeletal changes. Methods: In total, 17 women who underwent nonextraction orthodontic treatment and 15 women who underwent orthodontic treatment with extraction of all four first premolars were included in this retrospective study. For all patients, lateral cephalograms and dental models were measured before (T0) and after (T1) treatment. In addition, MLF was measured at both time points using the Lip De Cum LDC-110R® device. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate changes in clinical variables and MLF and their correlations. Results: Both groups showed similar skeletal patterns, although the extraction group showed greater proclination of the maxillary and mandibular incisors and lip protrusion compared to the nonextraction group at T0. MLF at T0 was comparable between the two groups. The reduction in the arch width and depth and incisor retroclination from T0 to T1 were more pronounced in the extraction group than in the nonextraction group. MLF in the extraction group significantly increased during the treatment period, and this increase was significantly greater than that in the nonextraction group. The increase in MLF was found to be correlated with the increase in the interincisal angle and decrease in the intermolar width, arch depth, and incisor-mandibular plane angle. Conclusions: This study suggests that MLF increases to a greater extent during extraction orthodontic treatment than during nonextraction orthodontic treatment.

Price discovery in the Crude Oil Spot and Futures Markets (원유선물시장은 현물시장에 대해 가격발견 기능이 있는가)

  • In this paper, price discovery between spot and futures in crude oil markets investigated using the Gonzalo and Granger and Hasbrouck common-factor models. The main findings are as follows. 1) Crude oil futures and spot market are cointegrated. 2) Following the preceding studies, we judged that Dubai(WTI) futures markets contribute to the price discovery process than Dubai(WTI) spot market when this Gonzalo-Granger and Hasbrouck information ratio for Dubai(WTI) market are larger than 0.5. In other words, the futures markets of Dubai and WTI plays a more dominant role in price discovery than the spot market. 3) But Brent futures market does not contribute to the price discovery process.

Force Assessment of Thermoformed and Direct-printed Aligners in a Lingual Bodily Movement of a Central Incisor Over Time: A 14-day In Vitro Study

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate the force delivery profile of thermoformed aligners (TFA) compared with direct-printed aligners (DPA) and to explore the effect of different activation amounts on forces and moments of respective groups. A secondary objective is to observe the amount of stress relaxation that occurs over the 7~14 days when aligners are maintained in a simulated intraoral environment. Materials and Methods: An in vitro setup was created to quantify forces and moments. It consisted of a three dimensional-printed base plate and segmented maxillary teeth, placed in a semi-enclosed chamber to maintain a temperature of 37℃. Ninety clear aligners were divided into nine groups of ten aligners each based on material types (Zendura, ATMOS, TC-85) and activation amounts. Aligners were created with 0.00, 0.25- and 0.50-mm activations for lingual bodily movement of the upper left central incisor and kept on models in the "stressed" position in a 37℃ water bath. Three force components acting on the upper left lateral incisor, upper left central incisor, and upper right central incisor were measured for each time point, beginning from the initial baseline measurement, 8 hours, 16 hours, 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, 6 days, 7 days, and lastly, 14 days. Result: TC-85 aligners in every activation group showed less force on teeth than Zendura and ATMOS. Significant force levels from 0.0 mm activation were present and stayed consistent over the course of 14 days. Comparisons made for baseline measurements to 7-days and 14-days showed statistically significant change from the baseline force level. Conclusion: TC-85 aligners demonstrated lower, more consistent forces with fewer side effects. Aligners can generate forces even when no activation is programmed. No major decreases in force levels over time were observed; the intra-oral clinical simulated environment and length of observation time could contribute to this.

Variability in physical therapy protocols following total shoulder arthroplasty

  • Background: Physical therapy (PT) plays an important role in the recovery of function following anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). While several PT protocols have been published for these patients, there is no standardized protocol for aTSA rehabilitation. This lack of standardization may lead to confusion between patients and physicians, possibly resulting in suboptimal outcomes. This study examines how PT protocols provided by academic orthopedic surgery programs vary regarding therapeutic goals and activities following aTSA. Methods: PT protocols for aTSA available online from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited orthopedic surgery programs were included for review. Each protocol was analyzed to evaluate it for differences in recommendation of length of immobilization, range of motion (ROM) goals, start time for and progression of therapeutic exercises, and timing for return to functional activity. Results: Of 175 accredited programs, 25 (14.2%) had protocols publicly available, programs (92%) recommended sling immobilization outside of therapy for an average of 4.4±2.0 weeks. Most protocols gave recommendations on starting active forward flexion (24 protocols, range 1-7 weeks), external rotation (22 protocols, range 1-7 weeks), and internal rotation (18 protocols, range 4-7 weeks). Full passive ROM was recommended at 10.8±5.7 weeks, and active ROM was 13.3±3.9 weeks, on average. ROM goals were inconsistent among protocols, with significant variations in recommended ROM and resistance exercise start times. Only 13 protocols (52%) gave recommendations on resuming recreational activities (mean, 17.4±4.4 weeks). Conclusions: Publicly available PT protocols for aTSA rehabilitation are highly variable. Ketone ester supplementation of Atkins-type diet prolongs survival in an orthotopic xenograft model of glioblastoma

  • Heavy reliance on glucose metabolism and a reduced capacity to use ketone bodies makes glioblastoma (GBM) a promising candidate for ketone-based therapies. Ketogenic diet (KD) is well-known for its promising effects in controlling tumor growth in GBM. Moreover, synthetic ketone ester (KE) has demonstrated to increase blood ketone levels and enhance animal survival in a metastatic VM-M3 murine tumor model. Here, we compared the efficacy of a KE-supplemented Atkins-type diet (ATD-KE) to a classic KD in controlling tumor progression and enhancing survival in a clinically relevant orthotopic patient-derived xenograft GBM model. Our findings demonstrate that ATD-KE preserves body weight (percent change from the baseline; 112±2.99 vs. 116.9±2.52 and 104.8±3.67), decreases blood glucose (80.55±0.86 vs. 118.6±9.51 and 52.35±3.89 mg/dl), and increases ketone bodies in blood (1.15±0.03 mM vs. 0.55±0.04 and 2.66±0.21 mM) and brain tumor tissue (3.35±0.30 mM vs. 2.04±0.3 and 4.25±0.25 mM) comparable to the KD (results presented for ATD-KE vs. standard diet [STD] and KD, respectively). Importantly, the ATD-KE treatment significantly enhanced survival compared to the STD and was indistinguishable from the KD (47 days in STD vs. 56 days in KD and ATD-KE), suggesting that a nutritionally balanced low carbohydrate ATD combined with KE may be as effective as the KD alone in reducing brain tumor progression. Overall, these data support the rationale for clinical testing of KE-supplemented low-carb diet as an adjunct treatment for brain tumor patients.
