A Study on Regionalization in the World Crude Oil Markets Using Cointegration and Causality Analysis (공적분과 인과관계 분석을 통한 국제원유시장의 지역화 연구)

  • Discussions on regionalization of the world crude oil markets have provided important implications for the establishment of national energy policies. In particular, due to arbitrage trading, if these markets are regionalized, Korea who imports approximately 80% of the annual oil consumption from a single region may be faced with a crucial problem. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed regionalization of the world crude oil markets using causality analysis as well as cointegration method to consider temporal relationship and time lags. To analyze regionalization, we chose Dubai price for the Middle East market, Brent for the European, WTI for the U.S., and Tapis for the East Asian. For the case that long-run equilibrium existed between market prices, we used vector error correction model to analyze causal relationship, and for the case that equilibrium did not exist, we used Hsiao (1981)'s framework that can consider asymmetric time lags in the model for causality analysis. By the results of cointegration analysis, there did not exist long-run equilibrium among Dubai price and the other prices. However, we found the causal relationship among Dubai price and the other prices with one to four weeks time lags. Therefore, in effect, we could conclude that the world crude oil markets are unified supporting Adelman (1984)'s hypothesis.

  • When illegal transactions are made with bitcoin, it's not easy to track all the bitcoins used in the transaction and seize them. Especially, if criminals distribute illegal transactions by spreading them to several bitcoin addresses, it's difficult to track hidden bitcoins other than confiscated bitcoins even if some bitcoins are confiscated. This paper proposes a method for tracking and monitoring all bitcoin transactions suspected of illegal transactions. This method estimates bitcoin addresses that are highly relevant to crime among all bitcoin addresses that dealing with the address based on the bitcoin address list of the alleged crime, and keeps track of addresses that are relevant to crime and help to investigate illegal bitcoin transaction.

Treatment of Fingertip Amputation in Adults by Palmar Pocketing of the Amputated Part

  • Background First suggested by Brent in 1979, the pocket principle is an alternative method for patients for whom a microsurgical replantation is not feasible. We report the successful results of a modified palmar pocket method in adults. Methods Between 2004 and 2008, we treated 10 patients by nonmicrosurgical replantation using palmar pocketing. All patients were adults who sustained a complete fingertip amputation from the tip to lunula in a digits. In all of these patients, the amputation occurred due to a crush or avulsion-type injury, and a microsurgical replantation was not feasible. We used the palmar pocketing method following a composite graft in these patients and prepared the pocket in the subcutaneous layer of the ipsilateral palm. Results Of a total of 10 cases, nine had complete survival of the replantation and one had 20% partial necrosis. All of the cases were managed to conserve the fingernails, which led to acceptable cosmetic results. Conclusions A composite graft and palmar pocketing in adult cases of fingertip injury constitute a simple, reliable operation for digital amputation extending from the tip to the lunula. These methods had satisfactory results.

The Impacts of Oil Price and Exchange Rate on Vietnamese Stock Market

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of oil price and exchange rate on the two Vietnamese stock market indices: VN index and HXN index. This study uses the daily data from August 1st 2000 to October 25th 2019 of the two Vietnamese stock indices: VN index and HNX index, the two oil price indices: BRENT and WTI, and the two exchange rates: US dollar to Vietnamese dong and Euro to Vietnamese dong. Due to the presence of heteroskedasticity in our data, we use GARCH (1,1) regression model to perform our analysis. Our findings show that the oil price has a significant positive effect on the two Vietnamese stock market indices. In terms of the stock index volatility, both the VN index and HNX index volatilities are negatively impacted by the return of oil price. While the conclusion about the impact of oil price remained consistent through all three robustness tests, the effect of exchange rate on Vietnamese stock market indices is not consistent. We find thatchanges of the USD/VND exchange rate significantly impact the return and volatility of HNX index only in GARCH (1,1) setting. Our analysis also survives a number of robustness tests.

  • Path Planning is one of the important fields in robot technologies. Local path planning may be done in on-line modes while recognizing an environment of robot by itself. In dynamic environments to obtain fluent information for environments vision system as a sensing equipment is a one of the most necessary devices for safe and effective guidance of robots. If there is a predictor that tells what future sensing outputs will be, robot can respond to anticipated environmental changes in advance. The tracking of obstacles has a deep relationship to the prediction for safe navigation. We tried to deal with active contours, that is snakes, to find out the possibilities of stable tracking of objects in image plane. Snakes are defined based on energy functions, and can be deformed to a certain contour form which would converge to the minimum energy states by the forces produced from energy differences. By using point algorithm we could have more speedy convergence time because the Brent's method gives the solution to find the local minima fast. The snake algorithm may be applied to sequential image frames to track objects in the images by these characteristics of speedy convergence and robust edge detection ability.

Cyt1Aa from Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis Enhances Mosquitocidal Activity of B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD-1 Against Aedes aegypti but not Culex quinquefasciatus

  • The Cyt1Aa protein of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis is known to synergize mosquitocidal proteins of B. thuringiensis and Bacillus sphaericus strains. Cyt1Aa is highly lipophilic, and after binding in vivo to the midgut microvillar membrane serves as a "receptor" for mosquitocidal Cry proteins, which subsequently form cation channels that kill mosquito larvae. Here we report that Cyt1Aa can serve a similar function for lepidopteran-specific Cry proteins of B. thuringiensis in certain mosquito larvae. Engineering Cyt1Aa into the HD-1 isolate of B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki enhanced toxicity against $4^{th}$ instars of Aedes aegypti, but not against $4^{th}$ instars of Culex quinquefasciatus.

패턴 인식기법을 이용한 유출모형의 매개변수 최적화

  • 일반적으로 강우-유출모형은 lumped model과 distributed model로 크게 구분될 수 있으며, 우리나라에서는 이중 비교적 부족한 자료를 이용하여도 개략적 모의가 가능한 전자를 널리 사용하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 모형들의 매개변수를 보정하는 방법에 관해 연구하였다. 일반적으로 모형의 보정 방법에는 크게 시행오차에 의한 수동보정(manual calibration) 방법과 최적화 기법에 의한 자동보정(automatic calibration) 방법으로 나눌 수 있다. 수동보정 방법은 모형 수행결과를 수문곡선의 시각적 비교에 의해 관측치와 비교하여 모형 운영자의 주관적인 판단하에 조정하는 기법이며, 자동보정 방법은 최적화 기법을 이용8하여 특정한 산정기준(estimation criteria)을 최대 또는 최소화시켜 모형의 매개변수를 결정하는 방법이다. 이러한 최적화기법은 일반적으로 직접탐색법과 경사법으로 구분할 수 있다. 경사법은 수렴속도가 빠르지만 편미분에 의해 방향을 찾아가는 방법으로 편도함수가 필요하므로 수문모형에는 적용하기가 힘들므로 적합하지 않다. 그러나, 보다 많은 컴퓨터 수행시간을 필요로 하는 직접탐색법의 경우 수렴속도는 느리지만, 편도함수를 필요치 않으므로 수문모형의 최적화 기법으로 적합하다고 할 수 있다. 직접탐색법에는 simplex-search 법, 패턴인식(pattern-search)법, rotating-direction 법, brent 법 등이 있으며, 본 연구에서는 직접탐색법의 일종인 패턴인식(pattern -search)법을 이용하여 매개변수 최적화 과정을 모의하였다. 이러한 매개변수 보정모형을 구성한 후 이를 가장 보편적으로 사용되고 있는 유출모형인 각종 단위도법들을 결합하는 모형을 구성하였다. 또한 구성된 모형을 시범유역에 적용하여 나온 결과를 HEC-1에서 적용되고 있는 단일변량 증감법과 같은 최적화 기법을 이용한 결과와 비교·분석을 실시하였다. 본 모형을 활용하여 강우-유출 모형의 매개변수를 지속적으로 산정하고 일반화할 경우 임의의 유역의 수문기상학적 특성에 부합한 매개변수를 정량화 시킬 수 있었다.

Resolution of Protein-Losing Enteropathy after Congenital Heart Disease Repair by Selective Lymphatic Embolization

  • With improving survival of children with complex congenital heart disease (CCHD), postoperative complications, like protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) are increasingly encountered. A 3-year-old girl with surgically corrected CCHD (ventricular inversion/L-transposition of the great arteries, ventricular septal defect, pulmonary atresia, postdouble switch procedure [Rastelli and Glenn]) developed chylothoraces. She was treated with pleurodesis, thoracic duct ligation and subsequently developed chylous ascites and PLE (serum albumin ${\leq}0.9g/dL$) and was malnourished, despite nutritional rehabilitation. Lymphangioscintigraphy/single-photon emission computed tomography showed lymphatic obstruction at the cisterna chyli level. A segmental chyle leak and chylous lymphangiectasia were confirmed by gastrointestinal endoscopy, magnetic resonance (MR) enterography, and MR lymphangiography. Selective glue embolization of leaking intestinal lymphatic trunks led to prompt reversal of PLE. Serum albumin level and weight gain markedly improved and have been maintained for over 3 years. Selective interventional embolization reversed this devastating lymphatic complication of surgically corrected CCHD.

Prolonged Opioid Use Among Opioid-Naive Women Undergoing Breast Reconstructive Surgery

  • Background Patients that undergo mastectomy for breast cancer with reconstruction may be prone to prolonged opioid use. As risk factors are not well-established, this article sought to better understand the risk factors that may be associated with this. Methods Patients that underwent breast reconstruction between 2010 and 2018 were identified in PearlDiver, a national insurance claims database. Patient demographics and comorbidities were elucidated, and various complications were then identified. Descriptive statistics as well as a multivariate analysis was used to evaluate the association of risk factors and complications. Results Breast reconstruction patients of 24,765 were identified from this database. Obesity, tobacco use, benzodiazepine use, and anticonvulsant use were all associated with prolonged opioid prescriptions greater than 90 days after both alloplastic and autologous reconstruction. Conclusion Prolonged opioid use continues to remain a topic of concern, and particularly in cancer patients that undergo breast reconstruction. Providers should be aware of potential risk factors for this to reduce this chance following breast reconstruction surgery.

Isolated Spinal Accessory Nerve Palsy from Volleyball Injury

  • Spinal accessory nerve (SAN) palsy is typically a result of posterior triangle surgery and can present with partial or complete paralysis of the trapezius muscle and severe shoulder dysfunction. We share an atypical case of a patient who presented with SAN palsy following an injury sustained playing competitive volleyball. A 19-year-old right hand dominant competitive volleyball player presented with right shoulder weakness, dyskinesia, and pain. She injured the right shoulder during a volleyball game 2 years prior when diving routinely for a ball. On physical examination she had weakness of shoulder shrug and a pronounced shift of the scapula when abducting or forward flexing her shoulder greater than 90 degrees. Manual stabilization of the scapula eliminated this shift, so we performed scapulopexy to stabilize the inferior angle of the scapula. At 6 months postoperative, she had full active range of motion of the shoulder. SAN palsy can occur following what would seem to be a routine volleyball maneuver. This could be due to a combination of muscle hypertrophy from intensive volleyball training and stretch sustained while diving for a ball. Despite delayed presentation and complete atrophy of the trapezius, a satisfactory outcome was achieved with scapulopexy.
