  • In order to prevent livestock diseases and produce the high quality livestock products in the livestock industry, it is necessary to manage the conditions of the livestock farms in the optimal condition. Therefore, these days the research on livestock growth models that analyze the factors of the air environment, the breeding environment, and the numerical rules of livestock in vivo is being carried out to improve and manage the environment in which livestock are kept. However, conventional models of growth are not sufficient to support the decision-making to control complex environment in pen by analyzing and interpreting air environment and breeding environment in a complex way. In this paper, we propose a method to control the complex environment in pen by using artificial neural network model based on biological information, air environment, breeding environment and production information.

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce the present situation of broiler breeder industry, and to investigate some problems related to it in Korea. The number of broiler breeding farms were 231 in 1990. It peaked to 264 in 1992, but decreased afterward to 232 in 1995. The number of broiler parent stock were over 4 millions since 1992 except in 1993. The number of commercial chicks produced per breeding hen was around 100, which is far below to the suggested values of breeding companies. The number of hatching eggs produced per breeding hen were 168 eggs in US, 156~170 eggs in Thailand, and 160~170 eggs in China. Factors involved in the lowered performances of broiler parent stock in Korea appear to be 1) the poor isolation of breeding farms from commercial broiler farms, causing easy contamination with various diseases, 2) the failure to provide proper environment to the breeder, and 3) the failure to control body weight during laying periods.

  • This research was conducted to reveal the characteristics of breeding ecology of oriental scops owl (Otus sunia stictonotus) inhabiting in South Korea according to the nest types during the breeding season from march to October for two years (2011 and 2012). Oriental scops owl nested in woodpecker's nest holes (46.1%), natural tree holes (38.5%), and artificial wood boxes (15.4%). These nests were located on following trees: Zelkova serrata, Paulownia coreana, Celtis sinensis, Salix chaenomeloides, Salix babylonica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Robinia pseudoacacia and Platanus occidentalis. The hatching success was 91.4%, fledging success was 83.0%, and breeding success was 75.9%. The factors of the breeding failure were falling (57.1%), abandonment (28.6%), hatching failure (7.1%), and others with unknown cause of death (7.1%). According to nest types, the fledging success (69.2%) of woodpecker's nest holes were low and the hatching success (79.2%) of natural tree holes were also low due to hatching failure and abandonment. However, hatching success, fledging success, breeding success were high in the artificial nests as all the eggs hatched and succeeded in fledging. Therefore, we suggested that artificial nests can cover the weaknesses of natural nests as well as increasing the breeding success. However, long-term research on installation place, height, and hole sizes of the artificial nest are required in order to clearly reveal the effects on the breeding success of oriental scops owl.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of trails on breeding bird community by territory mapping method from April to August 1999 in Chirisan National Park. Twenty-five bird species were observed and 18 bird species bred in 4 study sites. Thirteen species bred in Imgullyung site 14 species in Imgullyung trail site 14 species in the Nogodan site and 15 species in the Nogodan trail site. There were bred 62.0 pairs of birds in the Imgullyung site 55.0 pairs in the Imgullyung trail site 36.5 pairs in the Nogodan site and 36.5 pairs in the Nogodan trail site in the breeding season 1999. There were no differences in breeding bird communities among 4 sites. The nesting and foraging guild structures were similar among 4 sites. It seems that trails do not influences on the breeding bird community becasuse the canopy layer was similair and connected and understory vegetation was developed around the trails. It would be needed the maintenance and management of canopy layer and understory vegetation for the protection and management of bird communities around the trails.

  • A single trait linear mixed random regression test-day model was applied for the first time for analyzing the first lactation monthly test-day milk yield records in Karan Fries cattle. The test-day milk yield data was modeled using a random regression model (RRM) considering different order of Legendre polynomial for the additive genetic effect (4th order) and the permanent environmental effect (5th order). Data pertaining to 1,583 lactation records spread over a period of 30 years were recorded and analyzed in the study. The variance component, heritability and genetic correlations among test-day milk yields were estimated using RRM. RRM heritability estimates of test-day milk yield varied from 0.11 to 0.22 in different test-day records. The estimates of genetic correlations between different test-day milk yields ranged 0.01 (test-day 1 [TD-1] and TD-11) to 0.99 (TD-4 and TD-5). The magnitudes of genetic correlations between test-day milk yields decreased as the interval between test-days increased and adjacent test-day had higher correlations. Additive genetic and permanent environment variances were higher for test-day milk yields at both ends of lactation. The residual variance was observed to be lower than the permanent environment variance for all the test-day milk yields.

  • In order to analyze the meteorological factors influencing breeding activities of the Kaloula borealis, spawning sites which are located in Daejung-Eub, Jeju Island were investigated for 4 years from 2008 to 2011. The factors for analysis were rainfall, humidity, temperature, barometric pressure and wind speed. Comparative analysis were done on the spawning activities on rainy days. The analysis shows that the main factors influencing breeding activities of the Kaloula borealis are rainfall, humidity, and barometric pressure. The most influencing factor among them is rainfall. According to the analysis, the Kaloula borealis participate in spawning activities when it rains hard and humidity and barometric pressure also have influence on their spawning activities to a certain degree. As for temperature, the breeding season is summer so it meets one of the conditions for breeding activities. As a result, like the previous studies on other anurans in temperate regions, rainfall and temperature have a great impact on breeding activities of the Kaloula borealis.
