A Study on the Reduction of Stress Concentration for the Breech System (잠금장치의 응력집중 저감에 관한 연구)

  • The breech system can be considered as a pressure vessel with an internal plug under high explosive pressure. The system consists of a breech block(internal plug) whose front surface subjects to pressure, and a breech ring(pressure vessel). There is the geometric discontinuity around roots of connection parts and then stress concentration is introduced due to pressure, where contact effect may be ignored because contact plane between two equipments is parallel ideally, Generally high stress concentration phenomena shorten the life cycle of the mechanical system. It is well known that shock load is much more harmful on safety of the system than static load. In this present paper, several geometric design variables which may affect stress condition on the system are chosen and the parametric study on the design variables is carried using commercial FEM codes. Finally, the obtained results in the single lug breech system are applied to design the 3 lugs breech system. The 3 lugs breech system can reduce the maximum stress level.

A Study of Dynamic Impact Models for Pile-Driver Breech Fatigue Testing System (대용량 포미장치 피로시험기의 충격 거동 모델링)

  • This paper presents the modeling and validation of a pile-driver breech fatigue testing system model to replicate actual high pressure in a large caliber gun barrel. A hysteresis damping function was incorporated in the nonlinear impact force model. Test of real pile-driver breech fatigue testing system had been performed for model validation. Comparison of the experimental result and model simulation during impact were made. Numerical studies were performed to evaluate how the actual chamber pressure pattern in the live firing of gun barrel was affected by parameters' variation. Some of the parameters simulated included input velocity, damping coefficient and stiffness. As a result, a variety of actual chamber pressure pattern could be reproduced and controlled through current simulation model.

Study on the Propellant Position for the Decrease of the Differential Pressure in the Interior Ballistics of a Gun Propulsion System (강내탄도 내 차압 감소를 위한 추진제 위치 연구)

  • The position effect of the solid propellant in the combustion chamber on the decrease of the differential pressure has been investigated using the IBcode. Generally the metallic cartridge or CCC (combustible cartridge case) are used to load the propellant of the gun propulsion system. The position of the cartridge(propellant) is, therefore, a major factor for the interior ballistics in case the combustion chamber is larger than the cartridge. In this study, three different positions in the empty space of the chamber have been considered. As results, the case of the propellant located in the region near the base and breech has shown that the negative differential pressure and the difference between the breech pressure and the base pressure are much higher than those of the case of the propellant located in the center of the chamber. The case of the propellant in the center of the chamber is, therefore, more profitable to improve the performance of the interior ballistics.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations have been carried out to study how coolant injection conditions influence the cooling efficiency and projectile ejection performance in a mixture-gas ejection system (or gas-steam launch system). The 3D single-phase computational model was verified using a 1D model constructed with reference to the previous research and then a two-phase flow computation simulating coolant injection on to hot gas was performed using a DPM (Discrete Phase Model). As a result of varying the coolant flow rate and number of injection holes, cooling efficiency was improved when the number of injection holes were increased. In addition, the change of the coalescence frequency and spatial distribution of coolant droplets caused by the injection condition variation resulted in a change of the droplet diameter, affecting the evaporation rate of coolant. The evaporation was found to be a critical factor in the design optimization of the ejection system by suppressing the pressure drop while the temperature decreases inside the breech.

  • This paper describes the system for detecting the tank crew's(loader's) hand, arm, head and the upper half of the body in a danger area between the turret ceiling and the upper breech mechanism by computer vision-based method. This system informs danger of pressed to death to gunner and commander for the safety of operating mission. The camera mounted ort the top portion of the turret ceiling. The system sets search moving object from this image and detects by using change of image, laplacian operator and clustering algorithm in this area. It alarms the tank crews when it's judged that dangerous situation for operating mission. The result In this experiment shows that the detection rate maintains in $81{\sim}98$ percents.

Effect of Igniter's Burning Rate on Negative Differential Pressure of Interior Ballistics (점화제 연소율이 강내탄도의 NDP에 미치는 영향)

  • The appearance of the negative differential pressure(NDP), in which the shot base pressure is higher than the breech pressure, indicates that a potential damage on the gun system is increased. In order to safeguard the gun system, the igniter must be designed to minimize the NDP during the firing process. From this reason, the effect of igniter's burning rate on the NDP of the interior ballistics has been investigated through the numerical simulations. The NDP has been increased with increment of the coefficient in the burning rate of the igniter. A sudden change of the chamber pressure has been shown in case of using a singular coefficient.

  • System administrator or security managers need to collect logs of computing device (desktop or server), which are used for the purpose of cause-analysis of security incident and discover if damage to system was either caused by hacking or computer virus. Furthermore, appropriate log maintenance helps preventing security breech incidents through identification of vulnerability. In addition, it can be utilized for prevention of data leakage through the insider. In the paper, we present log collection system developed using open source supported by commands and basic methods of Windows. Furthermore, we aim to collect log information to enable search and analysis from diverse perspectives and to propose a way to integrate with open source-based search engine system.

  • Advanced tanks in the future combat system are expected to have the trends of large caliber, high explosive shell and light weight for destructive power and improvement in mobility. Their guns are required to have longer barrels to meet increased muzzle exit velocities. However, as the length of the barrel is extended, the vibrations induced by the breech forces in fire and the terrain lead to increased muzzle pointing errors. Therefore, the fire-induced and terrain-induced vibrations must be attenuated. A method to reduce these vibrations without the significant increase of the gun mass is to use the forward thermal shroud as part of a tuned mass damper. In this study, the dynamically-tuned-shroud using this shroud and leaf springs is introduced and its effectiveness on the vibration attenuations of the barrel are verified. The parametric studies on the stiffness of these leaf springs are performed and the analytical results are verified using the experimental model of the dynamically-tuned-shroud.

A Study on the Pressure-travel Curve of 5.56mm Rifle Obtained from the Empirical Base Pressure Factor (탄저압력계수를 이용한 5.56mm 소총의 압력-이동거리 곡선 산출)

  • As the propellant mass is being accelerated out of the gun chamber along with the projectile, a continuous pressure gradient exists between the end of chamber and the base of the projectile. For this reason, the base pressure-travel curve is very important to design a conventional gun barrel in the interior ballistics, but it is not obtained briefly by empirical or theoretical method. In this paper, a simple relation between chamber pressure and base pressure was determined by the factor of base pressure(Cb) obtained from the experimental method. The simple relation gives a reasonable prediction for the reduction of pressure between the breech and the base of projectile owing to the axial gradient in the gun tube. The predictions have been validated by the infrared screen sensor and the PRODAS(PROjectile Design and Analysis System) for interior ballistic systems. Therefore, the base pressure-travel curve could be calculated from the chamber pressure measured by piezoelectric sensor. The base pressure-travel curve obtained from the simple relation offers initial information to gun barrel designer and is used for calculation of muzzle velocity.
