A study on the Historical Significance of Luciano Baldessari's Pavilion Architecture for Breda (선전과 소통 : 루치아노 발데사리의 브레다 전시관 계획에 관한 고찰 1951-1963)

  • Main theme of this paper is the evaluation of the historical significance of Luciano Baldessari's exhibition works mainly during the Fifties. In order to understand the formal and logical basis of those project, his relationship with the historical Avant-gardes and the consequences expressed in his pavilion projects for the Breda Industrial Company are analyzed. The first part focuses on the influence of Italian Futurism, German Expressionism and Italian Rationalism on the formation and experience of Baldessari during the interwar years. The encounter with these movements determine the interest but also the principles along which Baldessari represents his idea of object, space and place. Specially his professional activities during Fascism would determine his attitude toward political power and the necessity of autonomy in artistic sphere. In the second part, different themes that Baldessari affronted in each project of Breda Pavilions is analyzed. Another important issue regard the historiography of the contemporary architecture. Often, many important works that lies in the threshold of the disciplines such as painting and sculpture and media art were excluded in the history of architecture just because they do not deal with the architectural object. Recently, many elements such as theatrical project and temporary objects are considered as part of urban reality and architecture with acknowledgment of their capacity to create event and situations. Along this thought, not just the reconfiguration on the territory of architecture in present but also the criterion to evaluate the past history of architecture is changing drastically. This study on the pavilions of Baldessari intends to contribute indirectly on the current issue of dominion of architecture, but also to evaluate objectively recent architecture. Consequently, architectural protagonists such as Baldessari and their ephemeral projects would be evaluated compressively in their multiplicity of significance.

A THEORY OF RESTRICTED REGULARITY OF HYPERMAPS

  • Hypermaps are cellular embeddings of hypergraphs in compact and connected surfaces, and are a generalisation of maps, that is, 2-cellular decompositions of closed surfaces. There is a well known correspondence between hypermaps and co-compact subgroups of the free product $\Delta=C_2*C_2*C_2$. In this correspondence, hypermaps correspond to conjugacy classes of subgroups of $\Delta$, and hypermap coverings to subgroup inclusions. Towards the end of [9] the authors studied regular hypermaps with extra symmetries, namely, G-symmetric regular hypermaps for any subgroup G of the outer automorphism Out$(\Delta)$ of the triangle group $\Delta$. This can be viewed as an extension of the theory of regularity. In this paper we move in the opposite direction and restrict regularity to normal subgroups $\Theta$ of $\Delta$ of finite index. This generalises the notion of regularity to some non-regular objects.

  • KB103 was developed from a cross between Burley 21 and Va 528 in 1983. It was developed by haploid method derived from anther culture method. It has moderate resistance to black shank(Phytophhorn nicotianae Breda de Haan Var. nictiana Waterhouse). KB103 produced good yields and quality in 1988-1990. It flowered about four or five days later than standard variety Burley 21, and plant height, leaf width, leaves per plants were similar to those of Burley 21. In maturing and curing properties as well as in chemical constituents of cured leaves, KB 103 was very similar to that of Burley 21. Regional farm test with the breeding line, KB 8304- ADH 65 named as KB 103 in 1986, was performed for 4 crop years from 1987 at 29 locations. It was released on burley tobacco area in 1992.

Performance of "KB 101" a New Burley Tobacco Resistant to Bacterial Wilt and Black Shank (내병성 버어리종 신품종 "KB 101"의 육성경과 및 특성)

  • KB 101 is a bacterial wilt(Pseudomonas solanaceamm E.F. Smith) and black shank (Phytophthora nicotianae Breda de Haan Var. nicotianae Waterhouse) resistant cultivar of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) KB 101 was developed by the Korea Ginseng&Tobacco Research Institute, and released in 1987. KB 101 was developed from a single plant selection in the F2 generation derived from the double cross, [(Burley 21X Burley 37) X (Burley 64X Ky 16)]. Burley 37 and Burley 64 were the source of resistance to bacterial wilt and black shank. Yield trials were conducted in the Fs through F6 generations at the four Exp. Stn. of Korea Ginseng &Tobacco Research Institute as JB 7705-1. On-farm yield trials were conducted in the F7 through F9 generations at the 45 locations of burley tobacco growing area from 1984 to 1986 as KB 101. KB 101 has an erect growth habit similar to that of Burley 21: plant size is larger and has more leaves than those of Burley 21. It is late maturing cultivar that flowers approximately 3 days later than Burley 21. The physical characteristics and chemical composition of KB 101 were similar to those of Burley 21.

Root Rot of Carnation Caused by Phytophthora nicotianae (Phytophthora nicotianae(Breda de Haan)에 의한 카네이션 역병)

  • Root rot of carnation caused by isolates of Phytophthora was found at Kongju, 1996. Infected plants appeared symptoms of wilting, brown discoloration on collar area and consequently led to death. The causal pathogen was identified as Phytophthora nicotianae based on morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics. Mycelium was grown to rosette colony pattern on corn meal agar and the growth was 10.2 mm/day on 10% clarified V8 medium at $25^{\circ}C$. Swelling with radiating hyphae was formed in water and on agar within 7 days. Chlamydospores were abundantly produced on agar within 7 days. Sporangium was prominent papillate, 2~3 apex, 1.2 : 1 l/b ratio, lateral attacment on sporangiospore and was rarely produced on solid media but produced in water. The shape of sporangium was spherical or ovoid, and the size was 34~73$\times$32~60 (av. 33$\times$66.5) ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in dimension. The isolates were heterothallic, and mating type A2. Oogonium was spherical, ovoid, 26~36 (av. 36 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) in diameter, and antheridium was amphygynious to oogonia. The fungus was able to grow 10~35$^{\circ}C$, and optimal temperature was 27$^{\circ}C$.

Effectiveness of Ni-based and Fe-based cladding alloys in delaying hydrogen generation for small modular reactors with increased accident tolerance

  • This study investigates the high temperature oxidation behaviour of a Ni-20Cr-1.2Si (wt.%) alloy in steam from 1200 ℃ to 1350 ℃ by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The results demonstrate that exposed Ni-based alloy developed a thin oxide scale, consisted mainly of Cr2O3. The oxidation kinetics obtained from the experimental results was applied to evaluate the hydrogen generation considering a simplified reactor core model with different cladding alloys following an unmitigated Loss-Of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) scenario in a hypothetical Small Modular Reactor (SMR). Overall, experimental data and simulations results show that both Fe-based and Ni-based alloys may enhance cladding survivability, delaying its melting, as well as reducing hydrogen generation under accident conditions compared to Zr-based alloys. However, a substantial neutron absorption occurs when Ni-based alloys are used as cladding for current uranium-dioxide fuel systems, even when compared to Fe-based alloys.

Diagnostic accuracy of clinical tests to rule out elbow fracture: a systematic review

  • Elbow traumas represent a relatively common condition in clinical practice. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the most accurate tests for screening these potentially serious conditions and excluding elbow fractures. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the literature concerning the diagnostic accuracy of clinical tests for the detection or exclusion of suspected elbow fractures. A systematic review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Diagnostic Test Accuracy Studies (PRISMA-DTA) guidelines. Literature databases including PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Diagnostic Test Accuracy, Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were searched for diagnostic accuracy studies of subjects with suspected traumatic elbow fracture investigating clinical tests compared to imaging reference tests. The risk of bias in each study was assessed independently by two reviewers using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 checklist. Twelve studies (4,485 patients) were included. Three different types of index tests were extracted. In adults, these tests were very sensitive, with values up to 98.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 95.0%-99.8%). The specificity was very variable, ranging from 24.0% (95% CI, 19.0%-30.0%) to 69.4% (95% CI, 57.3%-79.5%). The applicability of these tests was very high, while overall studies showed a medium risk of bias. Elbow full range of motion test, elbow extension test, and elbow extension and point tenderness test appear to be useful in the presence of a negative test to exclude fracture in a majority of cases. The specificity of all tests, however, does not allow us to draw useful conclusions because there was a great variability of results obtained.

Leaf Blight of Castor Bean Caused by Phytophthora nicotianae and P. palmivora var palmivora (Phytophthora nicotianae와 P. palmivora var. palmivora에 의한 아주까리 역병)

  • Two species of Phytophthora were isolated from a leaf blight disease found on castor bean plants growing at a residential area of Hwanggeum-dong in Daegu city. One species was producing conspicuously papillate, noncaducous, ovoid to obpyriform sporangia, 31.2-58.5 ${\times}$ 25.4-44.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in range with an average of 46.4 $\pm$ 6.5 ${\times}$ 35.9 $\pm$ 4.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ on simple sympodial sporangiophores, was heterothallic with oogonia globose, 22.5-35.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with an average of 30 $\pm$ 3.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter, oospores plerotic, 18.8-30.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in range averaging 25.4 $\pm$ 2.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and with antheridia amphigynous. This species was identified as P. nicotianae Breda de Haan. The other species produced papillate, caducous, ovoid to ellipsoid sporangia with pedicel, 21.5-54.6 ${\times}$ 17.6-34.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in range with an average of 41.7 $\pm$ 7.1 ${\times}$ 28.4 $\pm$ 4.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and was heterothallic with oogonia globose, 21.3-26.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with an average of 23.0 $\pm$ 1.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter, oospores plerotic, 17.5-23.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in range averaging 20.2 $\pm$ 1.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and with antheridia amphigynous. This species was identified as P. palmivora (Butler) Butler. Both species produced chlamydospores. Pathogenicity of the 2 speices was confirmed by foliar inoculation of castor bean seedlings. Both species have been reported to infect castor bean plants in a few foreign countries but it is the first that a disease of castor bean plants caused by either or both of the species was found in Korea.
