Evaluation of Deterioration on Steel Bridges Based on Bridge Condition Ratings

  • Recent developments in Bridge Management Systems (BMS) and in Life-Cycle Cost (LCC) of bridges, have raised the need for evaluation procedure of future condition (Deterioration) of a bridge. Predicting future deterioration is not an easy task due to limited past data to extrapolate from and also due to difficulty in measuring actual deterioration such as section loss of steel on an actual steel bridge. Also, increase in live load and reduction of resistance are random variables, thus a probabilistic approach should be adopted for determining the future deterioration. Due to difficulties in evaluation of future deterioration on steel bridges, accepting uncertainties within a reasonable error, a deterministic procedure using bridge condition rating can be a useful tool for projection of future condition of bridges to identify repair and maintenance needs. The object of this paper is to determine applicability of evaluating deterioration of steel bridge components based on Bridge condition ratings. Bridge condition ratings of bridge components show wide variation for bridges of same age and does not directly correlate well with the age of the bridge and/or deterioration of the bridge. High uncertainty can be reduced by breaking down the rating and by sensitivity analysis. From refined condition rating data, generalized deterioration profile of structures based on age can be derived. Examples are shown for sample bridges in USA. Approximately, 3,000 short to medium span steel bridges were listed in the inventory database. Results show wide variation of rating factors but by subdividing the Bridge condition ratings for various categories general deterioration profiles of steel bridges can be determined.

터렛 계류된 LNG-FSRU의 극한 계류 해석 (Extreme Mooring Analysis of Turret Moored LNG-FSRU)

  • In this study, hydrodynamic and mooring analysis for LNG FSRU moored by an internal turret with 9 mooring lines are numerically performed using commercial softwares, Hydrostar and Ariane. Met-ocean combinations for screening method are taken from wave governed condition(BV Rule Note NR 493) with relative heading between wave and wind between −45° and +45° and relative heading between wind and current between −30° and +30°. Extreme mooring analysis and sensitivity analysis are performed for intact and damaged (=one line missing) conditions and the parameters for sensitivity analysis are wave peak period, peak enhancement factor and line pretension. In the viewpoint of the design tension in mooring line, chain diameter is designed to satisfy safety factor for each conditions. As the chain diameter is increased from 152mm to 171mm, the designtension is reduced while the minimum breaking load is increased.

  • 우리나라의 서 남해안 지역과 내륙의 하천 인근 지역은 상당한 범위에 걸쳐 점성토 지반이 형성되어 있다. 연약지반상의 제체는 지지지반의 지지력 부족으로 인하여 변위를 일으킨다. 장기적인 압밀은 구조체의 침하나 전단파괴를 가져올 수 있다. 따라서, 지반의 파괴와 과다변형을 억제하기 위해서 건설현장에 다양한 연직배수공법을 적용한다. 이 연구는 지반개량의 범위에 기초하여 연직배수재를 연직 및 수평방향으로 변화시켜 효율적인 개량 범위의 형태를 결정하고자 한다. 제체의 가장자리로부터 거리에 따른 강도의 변화는 제체 사면의 현장 값으로부터 해석되어진다.

불규칙파에 의한 연안류 (Longshore Currents Driven by Irregular Waves)

  • 불규칙파에 의한 연안류를 수치모형으로 해석하였으며, 수치모형에 사용되는 제 경험식들을 개선하였다. 불규칙파의 쇄파조건으로 Kitaigorodskii의 평형조건식을 수정하여 사용하였으며, 실제 해저면에서의 마찰력을 계산하기 위하여 연흔의 생성과 형상에 따른 조고의 증가와 토사가 이동할 때 발생하는 에너지 손실을 고려한 조고의 증가를 동시에 고려하였다. 연흔 형상 산정식으로 Nielsen 식과 Madsen-Rogengaus 식을 사용하였는데, 연흔형상에 대한 두 식의 산정결과는 비슷하나 등가조고 산정에 도입되는 비례상수의 수치가 달라 추정된 등가조고에는 상당한 차이를 보이고 있다. 난류에너지식과 확산길이식에 사용되는 경험상수를 최적화 기법으로 결정하였으며, 이를 이용하여 불규칙파에 의한 연안류를 예측하였다.

잔교식 안벽의 말뚝 두부 내진 보강기법에 따른 수평재하실험 (Lateral Load Test for Various Aseismatic Methods of Pile Heads of Pier Type Quay Walls)

  • To construct pile-supported wharf structures that must support heavy horizontal loads, both vertical piles and batter piles are used. Batter piles are used to secure the bearing capacity against the horizontal loads. However, past case histories have shown that the heads of batter piles are vulnerable because these heads are subjected to excessive axial loads during earthquakes. Therefore, the aseismatic reinforcement method must be developed to prevent batter pile heads from breaking due to excessive seismic loads. Two different connecting methods of either inserting rubber or ball-bearing between batter pile head and upper plate were proposed to improve the aseismatic efficiency. Three large-scale pile head models(rubber type model, ball-bearing type model, and fixed type model) were manufactured and horizontal loading tests were peformed for these models. The results showed that the force-displacement relationship of the fixed type model was linear, but that of the rubber type model and the ball-bearing type model was bilinear. The increase in the horizontal displacement led to the increase in the horizontal stiffness of the rubber type models and the decrease in that of the ball-bearing type model. Compared with the values for fixed type model, the damping ratios of the rubber type model and the ball-bearing type model increased about 33~185% and 263~269%, respectively.

  • 기계적 제동방식이 사용되는 전동차는 공기제동과 전기제동을 혼합한 방식으로 최근 녹색성장을 지향하면서 효율개선 및 환경문제 해결을 위한 많은 방법들이 제시되고 있다. 기계적인 제동은 분진, 소음 등의 환경문제와 함께 브레이크 슈와 라이닝 등의 소모품을 교체해야하는 경제적 문제를 가지고 있다. 이러한 단점을 보완하기 위하여 고속 영역에서 정지에 이르는 광범위한 영역에 이르기까지의 전기제동을 필요로 하게 되었다. 본 연구는 구배에 의한 부하토오크를 추정하여 전동차를정지시키는방법에대해연구되어졌으며낙차에따른 토오크를 추정하여 제동하는 방법의 특성을 확인하였다.

  • Recently, inverter control systems have attracted immense attention to increase the energy efficiency. However, such systems use repeated on/off high currents for linear operation control, instead of the prevalent step variable current control method. Hence, there arise concerns of personal and property damage, especially due to the durability, explosive characteristics, and operating speed of the fuse, which is responsible for safety and is one of the internal components using current control. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an IEC60127-4 SMD sub-miniature fuse, consisting of Ag-Cu alloys and ceramic powder for arc soothing. The IEC60127-4 SMD sub-miniature fuse has high durability and cut-off capacity, and operates safely in dangerous circumstances caused by the inverter control system.

Evaluation of the fracture resistance of all-ceramic zirconia posts by 3 different methods

  • Statement of the problem. All-ceramic post-and-core restorations offer a number of advantages compared with systems that use metal build-ups. In certain clinical cases, however, fractures at the joint between the post and core build-up have been reported. Purpose. The objective, therefore, is to improve the joint between the post and the core build-up. Material and methods. Three different methods were used to prepare all-ceramic post-and-core restorations; pressing IPS Empress core build-ups to CosmoPost zirconia posts, cement-ing IPS Empress core build-ups to CosmoPost zirconia posts and Celay-milling of zirconia blanks. A series of ten restorations was prepared for each of the three methods. The post-and-core complexes were tested to failure with the load applied perpendicular to the post axis. The load and deflection at fracture were recorded. Results. The highest breaking load and highest deflection were recorded for the cementing technique with values of 25.3 N and $394{\mu}m$, respectively, The corresponding values for the pressed core build-ups and the milled zirconia core build-ups were 22 N and $301{\mu}m$, and 13 N and $160{\mu}m$, respectively. All the differences are statistically significant (p=0.05). Regarding the load-dependence of the deflection, the cemented core build-ups again demonstrated the highest value with $15.5{\mu}m/N$. The difference in the values of $13.6{\mu}m/N\;and\;13{\mu}m/N$ recorded for the pressed-on and milled core build-ups, respectively, were statistically insignificant. Conclusion. In regard to the high fracture resistance of zirconia post, adhesive cementing the core build-up to the post offers a viable alternative to the conventional pressing technique. The elastic bond between the rigid high-strength zirconia post and the core build-up presents an additional advantage.

Algebraic Analysis for Partitioning Root and Stem Lodging in Rice Plant

  • Lodging is classified as root lodging caused by the loss of supporting force in the root, bending caused by the deformation of the stem and breaking where the stem breaks down as loads exceeding critical elasticity were applied. This research excluded breaking which is not in a state of equilibrium and tried to partition the level of lodging using an algebraic model in root lodging and stem lodging, or bending. When a vertical load was applied, the deformation of the stem of rice plant showed the form of a quadratic equation. The trace of the panicle neck in the process of lodging was an ellipse-shape. When loading was pure root lodging, the trace of the panicle neck became a circle of which culm length is the radius. When it was a pure stem lodging, the trace of the panicle neck is an ellipse of which major axis is culm length and minor axis is 0.64* culm length. When both stem lodging and root lodging occurred in a natural setting, the partitioning of lodging can be calculated by a formula using eccentricity of an ellipse, S=e*100/0.768(S is the ratio of stem lodging in the whole lodging, e is eccentricity of the ellipse). This method is expected to be useful in simple lodging partitioning. We could also calculate the partitioning of stem lodging and root lodging as units of angles as an accuracy method, by using a straight line calculated by differentiating a quadratic equation of stem deformation at the origin of the coordinates. These two methods for dividing root and stem lodging showed different values. However, each of them showed almost same values with different lodging degree in one plant.

부착길이와 복부정착이 CFRP판으로 보강된 RC 보의 휨 보강효과에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Bond Length and Web Anchorage on Flexural Strength in RC Beams Strengthened with CFRP Plate)

  • 본 논문은 탄소 FRP 판을 이용한 철근 콘크리트 보의 휨 보강효과와 거동에 대한 연구이다. 본 연구에서의 실험인자로는 휨보강 탄소 FRP 판의 부착길이와 탄소 FRP 쉬트의 복부정착 길이이다. 시험보는 탄소 FRP 판으로 인장면에 부착하여 휨 보강하고 FRP 판을 탄소 FRP 쉬트로 복부에 정착하였다. 일반적으로 복부정착이 없는 휨 보강된 보들의 파괴형태는 횡방향 주철 근을 따라 발생한 콘크리트 덮개 박리파괴를 나타내었다. 반면, 탄소 FRP 쉬트로 복부 정착된 휨 보강 보들은 CFRP 파단파괴 후 콘크리트 경계면 전단 박리파괴를 나타내었다. 보강된 보들의 극한하중과 극한처짐은 FRP 판의 휨 부착길이의 증가에 따라 증가하였다. 또한, 휨 보강된 보들은 FRP 쉬트의 복부정착 길이의 증가에 따라 극한하중과 극한처짐 값이 증가하였다. 특히, 복부 정착한 보들은 최대 극한하중에 도달한 후에도 상당한 극한하중 지지능력을 상당한 극한 처짐 시까지 유지하였다. 시험보의 길이에 걸친 FRP 판의 변형률 분포는 휨 모멘트도의 모양과 거의 유사하여 전단지간에서 일정한 전단응력 분포를 가정할 수 있었다. 전지간을 휨 보강한 보에 있어서는 콘크리트와 FRP 쉬트에 의한 경계면에서의 극한전단 저항강도는 복부정착 길이가 늘어남에 따라 증가하였다. 전단 저항강도 중에서 본 실험에서 사용한 복부 정착 FRP 쉬트도 일부의 전단 저항강도를 부담하였다.
