  • CAGD(Computer Aided Geometric Design) is a branch of applied mathematics concerned with algorithms for the design of smooth curves and surfaces and for their efficient mathematical representation. The representation is used for the computation of the curves and surfaces, as well as geometrical quantities of importance such as curvatures, intersection curves between two surfaces and offset surfaces. The $B\acute{e}zier$ curves, B-spline, rational $B\acute{e}zier$ curves and NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) are basically and widely used in CAGD. The definitions and properties of these curves are presented in this paper. And a brief history of study on the bound for derivative of rational curves in CAGD is also presented.

  • Yim Eon Kook was deeply involved in founding Chijongcheong(national tumor medical clinic), a government branch in charge of treating tumors mid-Chosun dynasty. He came to be famous nationwide for curing tumors well and when the royal family was notified of this, they founded the Chijongcheong to supply professional health care. He wrote books on treating tumors such as "chijongjinam" and contributed significantly to the advancement of the tumor treating during his times. He also influenced the development and advancement of tumor-related treatments in late-Chosun as well.

  • The morphology and life history of Stylonema reniforme Kajimura (Stylonematales, Rhodophyta) from Japan were investigated and its taxonomic placement was discussed. This species has 6-30 discoid chloroplasts devoid of a pyrenoid in each cell. This is a typical feature of the genus Goniotrichopsis. The species reproduced only by monospores, which were formed by the direct transformation of the vegetative cells similar to the type species Goniotrichopsis sublittoralis Smith. Goniotrichopsis reniformis (Kajimura) Kikuchi comb. nov. was proposed. The asexual life history of the present species was completed in 3-10 weeks at $15-20^{\circ}C$ in culture.

  • In this study, we examine Maeng Hwa-seop's academic activities, focusing on articles published in Uirim, JKM (Journal of Korean Medicine), and other branch journals which were affiliated with the Society of Korean Medicine. The present study charts and summarizes the papers published in the above journals. By organizing Maeng Hwa-seop's papers and making tables, we find that his research can be divided into four categories: symptoms and diseases, prescriptions, academic presentations, and translations of medical literatures. Based on this study, we hope that further researches about the academic activities of Maeng Hwa-seop can be conducted in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is (1) to ascertain the common trends In establishing the branch library of university libraries in Korea and (2) to Investigate Into Its effect upon the use of university libraries as a whole. In order to achieve this purpose. this study focused on the relationship of branch libraries with the size of library collections. the number of students, history of universities, the number of academic departments, the space of main libraries and the budget of the libraries. Seventy-three branch libraries established within the twenty-six university libraries were chosen for the first purpose of this study. In order to achieve this second purpose. 6 university libraries are chosen two libraries with six branch libraries. two libraries with three branch libraries. and two libraries without a branch library The number of visitors were counted at the doors of the six libraries at indifferent time periods.

  • After the establishment of the Korean Government in 1945, we were busy building up library collections, especially expanding the quantity of books. As a result, nowadays we witness the problem of limited space to keep the books. Space is one of the most important factors in the environment of library materials preservation. To solve this problem, we have to establish many levels of deposit library. The deposit library functions to preserve library materials. Preservation is defined as 'preservation', 'conservation' and 'restoration'. Deposit library was not for circulation that established in the Korea Dynasty, was succeeded by the branch libraries for Historical Deposit Libraries and branch library of Kanghwa magistracy of Kyujang-gak in the Chosun Dynasty. This study is to analyze the establishment, the activities and functions of the branch library of Kyujang-gak at Kanghwa Magistracy as a deposit library. Hence this study provides valuable information for future research of the history of deposit libraries in Korea.

  • NGC147 and NGC185, paired satellites of the Andromeda galaxy, possess the same order of mass and analogous structures, but they show different star formation and different amounts of interstellar gas and dust. Therefore, we present the first reconstruction of the star formation history of NGC147 and NGC185. Asymptotic Giant Branch stars are highly evolved stars that are brightest in K-band. This maximum K-band magnitude is related to the birth mass of stars. As a result, we have found a 9.9 Gyr old single star formation epoch for NGC185 followed by relatively continuous star formation. NGC147, however, has passed through two star formation episodes; one is as old as ~6 Gyr and the other is as recent as ~850 Myr. Asymptotic Giant Branch stars are also important dust factories; by fitting Spectral Energy Distributions to observed near and mid infrared data for each star, we were able to measure the dust production rates of individual stars; on order of $10^{-5}M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$. Hence, we estimate the total mass entering the interstellar medium to be $1.06{\times}10^{-4}M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ and $2.89{\times}10^{-4}M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ for NGC147 and NGC185.

  • In vertical seismic isolation (VSI), a building is partitioned intentionally by vertical layers into two dynamically different substructures for seismic response reduction. Initially, a 1-story frame was partitioned into two substructures, interconnected by viscous and visco-elastic links, and seismic responses of the original and the vertically isolated structures (VIS) were obtained, considering a large number of stiffness and mass ratios of substructures with respect to the original structure. Color contour graphs were defined for presentation and investigation of large amounts of output results. Dynamic characteristics of the isolated structures were studied by considering the non-classical damping of the system, and then the effects of viscous and visco-elastic link parameters on the modal damping ratios were discussed. On this basis, three states of mass isolation, interactional state, and control mass were differentiated. Response history analyses were performed by Runge-Kutta numerical method. In these analyses, interaction of isolation ratios and link parameters, on response control of VIS was studied and the appropriate ranges for link parameters as well as the optimal ranges for isolation ratios were suggested. Results show that by using the VSI technique, seismic response reduction up to 50% in flexible substructure and even more in stiff substructure is achievable.

  • Base isolation is a widely used technique for the seismic control of structures as it reduces the structural seismic demand. However, displacement of the isolation layer is not economically feasible in congested urban areas. To resolve the issue, an innovative system is proposed here to isolate both horizontally at the base and vertically in the upper portion of the structure. A simplified linear three degree-of-freedom (3DOF) model of the system that considers the mass and stiffness ratios of the substructure has been introduced and analyzed in MATLAB by spectrum analysis. The 3DOF model results revealed that, when the period of the soft substructure reaches 2.5 times that of the stiff substructure, the isolation and the lower substructure responses decrease by 65% and 51%, respectively. Time-history analysis of a MDOF system at three frequency ratios under a wide range of ground motions indicated that, at the expense of accepting a certain large drift by the soft substructure in the upper portion of the structure, base isolation displacement can be decreased by 10%.

  • The Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology is a branch of the Oriental Medicine that treat of physiological and pathological diseases of the female. The origin of the Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology begins at the pregnancy and delivery of the women. Therefore it has significant meanings about the birth of human beings. The field of this study has been very important to the Oriental Medicine. Accordingly the present writer is planning to study of the level of the Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology and its effects in those days, through Heo Jun(許浚)'s "Eonhaetaesanjipyo" ("諺解胎産集要") that is a work of the Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology books in the history of Korean Oriental Medicine.
