  • This paper presents hot spot behaviors on the rubbing surface of disk-pad type brake by using coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique. The height of micro-asperity on the rubbing surface is usually 2∼3 ${\mu}$m in practical disk brakes. Non-uniform micro-contacts between the disk and the rigid friction pads lead to high local temperature distributions, which may cause the material degradation, and develop hot spots, thermal cracks, and brake system failure at the end for a braking period. The friction temperatures on the rubbing surface of disk brakes in which are strongly related to the hot spot and thermal related wears are rapidly concentrated on the micro-contact asperities during braking. The computed FEM results show that the contact stress, friction induced temperature and thermal strain are highly concentrated on the rubbing micro-contact asperities even though the braking speed and force are small during the braking period. This hot spot may directly produce the slippage and various thermal wears on the brake-rubbing surface.

  • The disk cover is installed to protect brake disk and calliper and it's removed right before delivering to customers. The temperature of disk cover was measured driving test vehicles(2000cc, diesel) in this study. The highest temperature measured for the driving test(120km/h-braking(0.3G)-stop-120km/h-braking(0.5G)-stop) was $260{\sim}270^{\circ}C$ in the upper part of the disk cover and the temperature varied considerably around the disk cover. It can be inferred from this temperature distribution around the cover that the major heat transfer from hot disk to cover was through convection. In other words, the hot air generated by braking friction moved up to the upper part of the disk cover. And only the upper area of the disk cover was melted down during this driving test. The thickness of disk cover was increased to 1.0mm from 0.7mm and 1 paper of masking tape was pasted in the upper region of the disk cover. Then the cover endured the heated air formed by braking friction during the driving test.

  • In tread braking of freight cars, braking force is produced by the friction between the wheel and the braking shoe. Friction coefficients such as the brake power, weight variation and brake shoe types should be sensitively treated as the design parameters. The conditions of the car, empty and weighted, should also be taken into consideration in brake force design and the control of brake force has some limitations in terms of the brake system design so that the brake materials selection should be considered as important measures to solve that difficulties. Friction characteristics of brake materials should remain within the range of maximum and minimum value and the friction performance should remain stable regardless of braking time and temperature. This study presented an experimental evaluation method to secure optimum braking performance by keeping safe braking effect and braking distance by the friction coefficient of the brake shoe of the freight cars.

  • As the speed of rail transit is higher, it is very important to secure the safety and confidence of the braking device and in the point of view, by means of the rise of the temperature from the friction between the disk and pad which are the actual part of a braking system, the damage of brake disk is the main cause to lose the safety of braking device. Therefore, in this study, to predict the danger of a disk brake and to know its max. temperature in the train service the module of a temperature measurement by the non-contact method was developed.

  • By the increasing amount of vehicles, the increase of car accident served as a major momentum for remind the importance of braking system. The adequate design of a passenger car braking system, which is directly related to the safety of a car, is very important since the safety is an essential design parameter of a car to keep men and car from the damage. The thermal behaviors of the ventilated disk has been investigated based on the air cooling effects during repeat braking operations. In this study, the temperature and velocity fields of 3-D unsteady simulated model are obtained using a software package "FLUENT". The numerical results show that there exits a temperature nonuniformity between the disk faces contacting with pads.

  • This paper presents the braking friction and wears on the rubbing surfaces of a friction pad-disk brake. In this study, four friction disk specimens are sampled from unused and used disks in which are taken from the disk brake system when the friction induced vibration and noise problems have been occurred during a braking period at a running period of 10,000 km, 20,000 km, and 30,000 km in random. The experimental results indicate that the tribological characteristics of an unused disk brake shows equal and stable as a friction coefficient and temperature distributions during a braking friction/wear test period including a total friction mode from the start to running periods. But the used disk brake shows unstable and uneven friction modes between an outside and inside rubbing surfaces of a disk brake in terms of a friction coefficient and wears. This may lead to a friction induced friction vibration and noise problems of a used disk brake.

  • In this study, the analysis technique, which can estimate the temperature rise and thermal deformation of the ventilated disc considering the vehicle information, braking condition and properties of the disc and pad, is developed. The analytical process of the braking power generation during braking is mathematically derived. The thermal energy, which is applied to the surface of a disc as heat flux, is calculated. Then, the temperature rise and thermal deformation of a disc are estimated using FE software, SAMCEF. Shape of the cross section of the disc is optimized according to the response surface analysis method in order to minimize the temperature rise and thermal deformation. The hot judder analysis is done using the optimized disc, and the analysis results are discussed.

  • The brakes employed on commercial vehicles must be able to withstand three types of demanding services which are use-emergency stops from high speed, many repeated stops as in a delivery or bus route, and speed control in mountain descents. Two type of friction brakes are in use ; drum breaks and disc brakes. Drum brakes are of the internally expanding type in which two shoes fitted externally with friction material are forced outward against the inside of a rotating drum on the wheel unit. In this case, the Braking power is produced by the friction force between a drum and a lining, and is converted into heat. In this research an unsteady state heat transfer analysis for drum brake system of heavy truck has been performed by ABAQUS/standard code in the case of single-braking and the repeated braking condition. The temperature histories obtained by the finite Element analysis have been compared with the result calculated by the simplified formulation and the result obtained by the experiment of real vehicle conditions.

  • Continuous contraction and expansion of disk brake can be due to friction and temperature difference at repeated sudden braking. As serious vibration at disk is produced, the braking force will be changed ununiformly and braking system can not be stabilized. Temperature and heat flux at disk brake are investigated by structural and thermal analysis in this study. The maximum equivalent stress and displacement are shown respectively at the ventilated hole and the lower part of disk plate. At thermal analysis of initial state, temperature on disk plate is distributed from $95.9^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. The maximum heat flux of $0.0168W/mm^2$ is shown at the inner friction part between disk plate and pad. At thermal analysis of transient state, temperature on disk plate is distributed from $95^{\circ}C$ to $96.5^{\circ}C$ after 100 second. The maximum heat flux of $0.0024W/mm^2$ is also shown at the inner friction part between disk plate and pad. By comparing with initial state, the temperature on disk plate is more uniformly distributed and heat flux is more decreased by 7 times at transient state.
